I am a lifelong Iowa resident, and an avid hiker within the state and elsewhere. Unfortunately, this book is primarily just a partial listing of state parks and preserves, with very brief descriptions, crude maps, and black & white photos.The introduction states that this book was written by a college student who spent a summer hiking in Iowa, and the book does in fact read much like a college research paper. Rather than first hand information about hiking the area, most of the information for each hiking spot is about the geologic history of the region, statistical weather data, and historical names and dates of the area. While that information may be mildly interesting, that does not constitute a hiking guide in my humble opinion. There is nothing in this book that can not be easily found for free with 5 minutes of Google searching. There are no "hidden gems" or anything like that in this book.If you're interested in hiking in Iowa, save your money and get on the Iowa DNR website, or Google the county conservation board websites for the county you're interested in exploring. The information on the web is much better and the maps are MUCH more detailed and useful. Happy hiking.
