Robert Cooper developed the stage-gate methodology for new product development in the 1980's. It has had a profound effect on most large firms and many smaller firms. This structured approach to managing the inherently risky and complex cross-functional process of new product introduction has become a staple of MBA programs. Five stages and approval gates are used to manage the funnel from idea generation/discovery to project scoping to business case to development to testing/validation to launch/post-launch review.The third edition text outlines the basic structure. It provides best practices and practical advice for each stage. The author emphasizes the importance of speed and ways to use the stage-gate approach to deliver timely results, addressing the common criticism that the stage-gate process is inherently inflexible and slow. The 6 F's approach includes flexibility, fuzzy gates, fluidity, focus, facilitation and forever green. The basic risks of an overly rigid gate system are addressed, perhaps over-addressed. There is no in-depth treatment or review of alternate approaches to new product development that make time to market the primary focus.A significant amount of survey research is presented to define product introduction pitfalls and critical success factors. None of this is surprising, but the many lists provide a framework for product management practitioners to evaluate the effectiveness of their processes.The book provides several useful decision-making frameworks, including marketing/technology success factors, new to company/market, risks through time, risk/reward grids, gate decisions, and portfolio reviews.Overall, this is the best new product intro text available. It is addressed to marketing oriented product managers in large corporations, but is useful for anyone playing a role in a new product introduction process.The author promotes a high investment approach to new product development, best fitting a Fortune 200 firm. There are 5 stages, 5 gates, 6 F's, 7 goals, 8 points, 8 key factors and 15 critical success factors. Professor Cooper does not believe in shortcuts.Start with the stage-gate basics in chapter 5. Digest the other chapters as the need arises.

Robert Coopers "Winning at New Products" is "the classic" on product development (at least according to him) and is the book that introduces the Stage-Gate model that made some companies product development a lot better... and some companies a mess. I did not expected too much from the book, but it was better than I expected, except for some parts of it.The book broadly consists of three different parts. The first provides a background, the second provides guidelines for stage-gate and the last looks at strategy.The first four chapters try to convince the reader that new products and Robert Coopers ideas (stage-gate and the product he sells) are very good ideas. It's full of research 'evidence', but it seems to be coming from the same few sources. Also some of the conclusions from the research evidence are somewhat far fetched, in my opinion. Anyways, it did contain some useful information, like the effort spend on market research in early phases of a product is often not enough.The second part occupies most of the book and looks at the different stages in the stage-gate process. The focus of the book is actually NOT so much on the product development itself, but mainly on the marketing and product management aspect. This is important to realize, if you wanted a book on product development, you better look at other books like Don Reinertsens "Managing the Design Factory". Chapter 8 is a sidetrack chapter which talks about portfolio management. Chapter 10 is suppose to talk about the lat stage, but instead it seems to be a summary of the marketing issues needed throughout the whole development, which makes me wonder a little about the things that actually need to be done on the last stage.Some of the problems I had and have with stage-gate is that it does provide a very serial view on developing products. First start with marketing and "nail down the spec". Hand it over to development and then do testing. Cooper tries to explain that this is not the case, but it is very hard to make that conclusion when, on the next page, he says "nail down the spec before the development starts." He sometimes doesn't seem to know what he is actually advising. In that sense, the book did not convince me at all that stage-gate is a good idea, especially in fast cycle time products and software development.The last chapter covered strategy, but did so in a very minor way. It was still useful to include it to make the book one whole.I actually liked Coopers book. It had a strong marketing focus and I learned from that. I do not agree with some of the ideas Cooper has and also his references seem to be limited. Though, his writing style is absolutely awful. It's so popular! He uses exclamation marks every other sentence! Writes in absolutes! It really annoyed me!I thinking between 3 and 4 stars. Its certainly not "the product development bible" as Cooper claims himself. I decided to go for three stars mainly because of his annoying writing style and because the book could be written in 1/4th the amount of pages (a lot of blah blah). If you read one book on product development, this is not it. If you want to study the area more broadly, this book certainly needs to be included.

Bob Cooper, the author of this book, is the originator of the stage-gate approach to new product development, and is recognized as such by the federal government who registered this phrase under his company. He initially described the approach in a couple of excellent articles written in the late 1970s but this book, first written in the late 1980s and updated twice since, is really the best source for the stage-gate process. Although his writing can be dry and his tone preachy, you can't argue with the base information and the conclusions. He studied 3000 new products in hundreds of companies to identify what separates the winners from the losers in new products, and stage-gates are one of the keys, along with cross-functional teams and a clear understanding of the customer's needs. Today over 96% of companies in a recent survey use stage-gates, and the best at bringing new products to market, the organizations that are the most profitable and growing the fastest, do it well. This book lays out how to do it well. If you want to install a stage-gate process, and you need to, if your company doesn't have one, this is your best source.

An excellent job of Stage-Gates. This book represents one of the best overviews of this process. Where requirements are key, and any set of tasks, as well as the whole project, can best be observed and understood using this method. The key in having a successful project/product is first understanding the requirements and constraints. This book is excellent in this area and a great first step in the understanding required to implement great programs.

Quinn and Rafe ' story is a unique read in this series. We get to understand what makes Quinn's way of thinking different , but normal for him. My favorite part of this story is the heart to heart talk between him and his mother. In this story, we see the depth of how much the family, and even Mikie, love and adore the Morgan matriarch.My other favorite scenes is the ďeep friendship between Kane and Rafe.This story is a key element in the Sinner ' s series, and one not to be missed. It shows how all the Morgans, their lovers, and the band fit together.It shows how everyone can earn a second chance, and Rafe definitely has worked hard to be given his moment to shine. With the love and support of the Morgan family, the friendship and strenght of Sionne, and the love of his life standing by his side, a new chapter is about to begin for them all.

Rhys Ford fans have been waiting what seems like an eternity for the forth addition to the Sinners Series.The wait, while long and arduous -- I personally was forced to read lots of other authors during this time -- was well worth it. 'Sloe Ride' is five stars all around. Five Big Wonderful Happy Stars.Sloe Ride is Quinn Morgan's story, one of the notorious Morgan family of San Francisco and finally next in line for happiness. Quinn has fascinated me since he was first introduced in Sinner's Gin, I was really hoping he'd get his chance sooner than book 4, but beggars can't be choosers, or some such nonsense. I am such a sucker for the lonely geek. Quinn really struggles with being 'just a little different' than his brothers and sisters. Probably falls somewhere on the Asperger or Autism spectrum. He's struggled with depression as well. His brain runs hot and his heart has ALWAYS been in love with Rafe Andrade.....*fans face*Then there is Rafe Andrade, he has also been mentioned a few times. He's a Rock Star and a Dark Horse with an addiction to prescription meds that got him kicked out of his band and removed from everything that ever made him happy. He grew up with the Morgan's and when he is at his lowest he returns to lick his wounds and maybe, just maybe, lick Quinn.Rafe is trying to get his life back together and Quinn is trying to live his. Both are so much better together. Their relationship instead of being fire crackers and big bangs is slow and gentle--a slow ride. Don't get me wrong, the chemistry is sizzling and Rhys always writes great sex. Sloe Ride is about two people who have loved each other for a longtime finally recognizing it, and becoming a healthy couple. Of course this is all happening while someone seems to have it in for Quinn. Go figure.Five big stars for Sloe Ride: across the board; story line, characters, angsty stuff and chemistry.

I think I've read everything this author has written, and particularly have enjoyed this series. That said, I have to say that this ties with the first book as the favorite in the series (so far!). I agree with one of the other reviewers when saying this book definitely had a different tone;/feel to it than the other books and it made for a nice change by increasing the complexity and depth of the series. Quinn's always been one of my favorite characters in the book, and who wouldn't love the dark, handsome angsty Rafe with such a long history with the Morgan family. The relationship between Quinn and Rafe was intense yet charming. I particularly enjoyed the way Rafe's reactions to Quinn's often tangential but fascinating rambles; they seemed so genuinely interested and appreciative about what Quinn had to say. And I think a lot of us can relate to feeling somewhat trapped by ingrained family perceptions of who/what another family member is and reacting to them accordingly, often with the best of intentions. It was lovely to see how Rafe was able to see pasts those perceptions in spite of his long history with the Morgan family, and how he often stood as an advocate or shield for Quinn. All I can say, is if you enjoy this author and this series, you need to read this book.

I think Rhys Ford was describing herself with this line, even though it referred to Quinn. She writes the worlds in her books in sounds, smells and colors. I swear I can smell the fog and feel the cold when the Sinners and the Morgan's walk around in these stories. I don't know how else to describe how much I enjoy the way she writes. Ms. Ford can even make the description of blood and guts on a car hood seem almost lyrical.I'm trying to remember if anyone in the Cole McGinnis stories or the Sinner's, has gotten together without a dead body involved. All of these books are awesome murder mysteries and fabulous slow-burn romance stories.My only complaint is that I didn't get enough of just Rafe and Quinn together in this one. She writes awesome love scenes and they are love scenes, not sex scenes. Of course we knew Rafe would end up wanting to play with Sinjin, Damien and Forest. But it wasn't easy and Ms. Ford seamlessly wove those interactions in with the murder mystery and getting to delve deeper into Quinn and his past with Rafe. Of course Brigid and Donal were always there as the underpinning for the other characters.So great to see a little more of the couples and the Morgan's from the first 3 books. You need to read them all to appreciate this one. I hope and pray we'll get more books, after all, there are loads of Morgans left. I'm hoping maybe Ian might be next and more about the band. Now, even though I don't like paranormal much, I'm going to read the rest of her books because I just enjoy her writing that much!

This book was all I expected and more! I was timid about working with silk before I purchased Sara Lamb's book on spinning silk. She touches on everything one needs to know on silk spinning; the different types and grades, dying, spinning, weaving, knitting, as well as examples of her mistakes from her personal experiences of working with silk. The pictures are quite beautiful and it is obvious that she is a very talented fiber artist! The information she shares in her book is much needed info that is usually only barely touched upon in other spinning books. I love silk and am very excited to begin spinning it on its' own. Previously, I was a bit intimidated to try spinning silk without blending with other fibers, and attempting to dye it was something I have only thought of doing! After reading Sara's book, I feel more confident about working with silk. It's all here; everything you need to know about working with silk!! I highly recommend this for anyone that has ever wanted to work with silk fiber but was intimidated! Well worth the price!!

Love this book for all the educational content. The inspirations are wonderful, just wish there had been a link to one or two of the items in the Project Gallery, with instructions as to how it was sewn together. All in all, this is a wonderful resource.

This is a book worth your time, written by a retired career Congressional staff insider. Author Mike Lofgren has unique and critical insight into the workings of both the Republican Party and the Congress. And his take on both are depressing, bordering on frightening. He takes no prisoners with harsh judgement of the GOP, the Democrats, and corporate America. According to him, the Republicans are essentially shills for big business and the Democrats are just plain hapless.In a nutshell, the Deep State as Lofgren describes it is a combination of elected and appointed members of the legislative and executive branches; and corporate insiders, especially the military-industrial complex, Wall Street, and Silicon Valley. Together, fueled by enormous amounts of money, they effectively control the country, regardless of which party is in power or the wishes of the electorate. Lofgren believes the ‘Deep State’ in its current form began with the Manhattan Project during WW II. He describes the country’s situation in detail with specific examples. He points out the main dangers the country faces due to the Deep State, and finally, he lays out specific corrections he believes the country must take to save itself.Readers will have widely different views about Lofgren's thesis based on their perspective. I have a few observations. First, I think he's mostly right. But I wonder why he played the game for so long and only vents his concerns after retirement. He could be viewed as quite hypocritical. At times, his rhetoric is quite shrill (over the top). Also, although the 'Deep State' might be reaching new heights of control and manipulation, I do not think this is a very new phenomenon. Think about the Railroad Barons of the 19th century and many other examples. People with vast resources have always wielded great power for possible mischief. That's not to say we should not heed Lofgren's warning and strive to retake our democracy.Mike Lofgren says the worst and most vexing problem we face is money in politics and the ills exacerbated by the ‘Citizens Untited’ Supreme Court decision. He’s exactly right. His suggested solutions, while mostly right on target, are daunting. In the current state, its difficult to see how we get there.This is a book that should cause people to think and act. I highly recommend it.

I found this book to contain a tightly woven description of the U.S. government, and its shadow state, from the point of view of a recent insider. It raised these questions among others for me: How much of this commentary reflects the possible resentment of a former employee? If any of it is a reflection of one man's disillusion and "sour apples," does that mean that the content is any the less somewhat reliable, and to what degree?And lastly, if and how to react to the theme of the book, "You thought our government is broken? Well, the it's worse than that! --- it's all a stage play, with the real decisions being made behind the scenes." The Deep State is a disturbing, fascinating read that is tough to put down until its last page. Its content invites examination of our political and governmental practices in light of damning propositions that we have indeed lost our democracy, flawed though it may have been; We are no longer guided by our Constitution and its principles. Nor do we seem able and willing to grasp the failure of our institutions of justice and law, of public education, and of fair participation in our own economy. Lastly, in checking a fair portion of the book's sources and the author's background, I have come to believe that this is an "expose" that we would all do well to heed.I recommend The Deep State to all thinking Americans.

First, I would ignore all the one star reviews that appear to be the work of disinformation trolls or those who have no read the book. Especially those that try to critique the author of being part of some "liberal" conspiracy, which is ironic since he started off in DC as a republican during the Reagan years. Simply put, this book is a MUST READ for every American. It clearly spells out how the Deep State works: A confluence of the military industrial complex, Wall Street, corporate America, and how these forces have slowly hijacked the US Government to serve the elite at the expense of the American people and our national security. The whole point of the Deep State is that it is NON PARTISAN. It transcends democrats and republicans and you simply have to follow the money. Anyone who thinks that Donald Trump is not part of this - after appointing appointing a cabinet of billionaires and generals, de-regulating Wall Street even further, and driving up the military budget while threatening to curtail what little social services we have left, have clearly drunk the Kool-Aid. You don't get to be President unless you have the tacit support of the Deep State.

Laughable. I got suckered because us Conservatives and Libertarians are more tuned in to the implications of the book's title. Downloaded the audio/kindle to listen and read. Hooked my headphones in and began a long bike ride. Shortly in Lofgren credits ...wait for it... Elisabeth Warren for calling out the Deep State. LOL. I nearly fell off my Cannondale. I thought maybe it was a joke and I missed the tone. I kept listening. In a few more minutes, he basically labels the "TEA Party" as deplorables. As I kept listening I kept cutting him some slack. Finally, I couldn't take his bias anymore and feared I might crash from jawdropping leftist bias. Lofgren's answer the Deep State seems to be more effective Democrats implementing an even deeper more politically correct Deep State. The book seems like a psyop written to quell concerns about the real Deep State, which is mainly a socialists agenda to enslave the world.

This is an important book about an extraordinary individual. It's been said that victors write history, but even being on the winning side isn't always enough. As Senior Editor of World Book, I revised the encyclopedia's Civil War article to include what had been an important omission: that there were more freed slaves in the Union Army by war's end than soldiers in the entire Confederate militia. That factor played a decisive role in the war's outcome.Similarly, John C. Robinson was a great American aviator - internationally acclaimed in his lifetime - but as a black Mississippian, he's been largely forgotten. If not for author Thomas Simmons' excellent research - much of it derived through personal interviews - Robinson's achievements might continue to go unnoticed.Yet much of what this man did looms all the brighter when we consider the racial barriers he surmounted. When an aviation school denied him admission, Robinson took a janitorial job there and audited classes broom-in-hand. He built his own plane, started his own flying school - even helped create a black airport when white ones refused to refuel his plane.Robinson's pushed for an aviation program at Tuskegee Institute to train other black pilots, giving rise to the famous Tuskegee airmen who performed so bravely as the Red Tail squadron in World War Two. Not waiting for the US to enter that war, Robinson began fighting fascism in 1935 when Mussolini attacked Ethiopia. The Brown Condor led the Ethiopian air force, being twice wounded and also gassed. And after the war, he helped establish an Ethiopian airline.-- Newton Berry

Great book. Opened my eyes to Mussolini's ruthless invasion of Ethiopia, and the difficulties of breaking into aviation for African American pilots. This is the story of a brave, dedicated and devoted man who lived for Ethiopians, and for the future of African American Aviation, in spite of terrible odds and opposition. John C. Robinson was and is a real American hero and inspiration.

This book arrived in the morning and I didn't put it down until I was done in the evening. Such an extraordinary story about a truly extraordinary man that is beautifully told through the writing of Thomas Simmons. It is one of those books that will stay with me for a very long time. And I will encourage others to learn about the life and legacy of John Charles Robinson.

Enjoyed the man and his perseverance and Gulfport history as well as Ethiopian struggle. Warm, interesting, and enlightening. Recommend this well-written book!

I was on a project that used Amazon Web Services a couple of years back. I learned to use it in a very simplistic way. Ever since I've wanted to learn more about it, in anticipation of future projects.This book is definitely what I was looking for. It starts from the beginning, introducing AWS and what it can do. Then it takes you through many of the important aspects of using it: The Management Console, API, Security, Storage, and quite a bit more. Things are explained at the theoretical level. It doesn't take you through exercises or examples, but the explanations are pretty clear I found. This book won't make you an expert, but it gives you some valuable background so you are not lost going into a project where you have to use it.

This is a good overview of AWS for people who want to understand what AWS offers -- semi-techies like me. Once it explains the multiple offerings, the book goes into depth about to work with the application programming interface -- the API that one encounters when using AWS. That part is more for techies than for "dummies". The one disappointment is that it doesn't discuss specific third party applications that can be used by people who prefer not to build their own applications to run on AWS, and who don't want to go to an outside developer. For example, there must be someone somewhere who offers a canned application for people who want to back up data such as photos or music to S3 or to Glacier. But the only 3rd party software mentioned is Backupify, which handles data you store in the cloud, but mot data on your on-premise servers. (If there isn't a commercially available backup app that does what services like Carbonite do, there's a business opportunity for anyone reading this review,)

Its honestly a really good book - at first I wasn't really sold on it - it felt like it was missing details....but then about 1/3 of the way through the book - I realized that was getting a really education on the material.I was even cross referencing some of the material with the reference documentation on the AWS website and I realized that I was receiving the same material in a much cleaner / clearer fashion.I should say that this book will not make you an expert - but I think its a great introduction to the material

Outdated at this point. It give you a good grounding, but you are just as well off reading Amazon's free whitepapers.

Good overview for those not really familiar with AWS. I have to support (minimally right now) and it's just good to get to know the terminology, how it works, network concepts which are different than traditional methods, etc.. The AWS documentation is fine BUT voluminous to say the least and very dry to read. This is a good primer.

good starting material

This is an excellent book. It takes a vast sea of material and puts it into understandable language.

To get you going this is the one. Deep enough to learn to swim, not so deep you'll drown. This is a great book and will get you going.
