I read this book, and it reminded me of the Bushido Code, except it wasn't the way of the warrior, it was the way of spiritual serenity. Reiki is made from two Japanese words. Rei means higher, and Ki means life. This book deals more holistically with your health. Kind of the Japanese philosophy of Chi. There are multiple modes of Reiki, and each one aids your health. I wish I would've known about this in the '90s, because being naive, I contracted type 2 Diabetes because I didn't take my high Fructose consumption into account. This book guides you in centering yourself spirituallym recommended.

I had never heard of the spy Robert Hanssen . I thought it would be an interesting read and it was interesting. The book blurb presents this story as a 'tension packed stew'. I felt I was reading more of a procedural. As a young FBI agent, Eric O'Neill is put in a position ( a need to know position ) to help bring down suspected spy Robert Hanssen. Robert Hanssen was a decades long FBI employee,, in various high positions which allowed him access to information he sold to the Russians. The case takes place during 2001 so this book was a long time coming, and the author states he was finally given permission to write his side of the story. As a young agent the author is set up to be the sole employee of a newly created department or section and Robert Hanssen is his boss.I did feel the tension and stress that the younger Eric O'Neill was under with trying to cope with a new marriage, law school and his increasingly stressful job. He's fed information as the case progresses and his tasks become increasingly dangerous - trying to steal his bosses keys, stealing his palm pilot, getting close to his boss etc. It's a struggle to handle this heavy load as well as the lies he had to tell his new wife. That all came through loud and clear and I kept wishing the poor guy would give himself a break and take a leave from law school at least!It's interesting/amusing/nostalgic to recall the early days of computers and technology being integrated into our daily lives. I well remember Palm Pilots and how awesome they were, which you have to chuckle at today but that was the beginning. Today it seems so incredibly naive that the FBI would create computer databases with no real protection against access. That's how it was then though, and Robert Hanssen was very intelligent with computing and both the power and weak points of computerizing data. He masterfully stole classified information and sold it to the Russians for 22 years. Given how the author describes some former antics of the spy it's also amazing to me that such a whack job ( several incidents were revealed which should have gotten the guy fired right away) was able to keep getting these good assignments which provided him access to classified data. Thankfully, AFTER 2001 the FBI learned a tough lesson that that their employees have to be monitored also. Hard to believe, that seemed like a huge "duh" to me but that's how it was.Even given all the above the novel reads more like a procedural with regards to the case. I'm happy that Mr O'Neill was able to write the book as I don't feel he received adequate credit for all he did to stop and catch Hanssen.What was disturbing to read was the extent and level of expertise that the Russians have used to spy on the USA. I think most everyone, especially today, knows that most governments spy on each other and try to influence politics to their advantage. Again I'm just surprised that the FBI took so long to beef up cybersecurity.Ending the story the author discusses more about Russian, Chinese and North Korean cyber spying in the USA and the importance of cybersecurity, including computers that are linked together in a network are all vulnerable if one computer is infected. The FBI has instituted a security education and awareness training program to spot possible illegal access of information. But it still comes down to people.

I found this to be much more like reading a memoir than a case study, so depending on how interested you are in learning about the author himself, rather than just Robert Hanssen, this can be a pro or a con. I, personally, found the writing style to be typical of other books written by government agents who worked on a notable case. Not special, not bad. Overall, IMHO, worth a read if you are interested in the life of an FBI agent or in the Robert Hanssen case.But that’s JustMe.

Although written by the agent who cracked the Hanssen case, this book doesn't add to those already out there. The writing is awkward and contradictory at times when the author is trying to fill in irrelevant details around his life at the time.

About the Author

Edmund P. Clowney (1917-2005) received his B.A. from Wheaton College in 1939, a Th.B. from Westminster Theological Seminary in 1942, an S.T.M. from Yale University Divinity School in 1944 and a D.D. from Wheaton College in 1966. Ordained in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church, he served as pastor of several churches from 1942 to 1946 and was then invited to become assistant professor of practical theology at Westminster Theological Seminary in 1952. He became that institution's first president in 1966, and he remained there until 1984, when he took a post as theologian-in-residence at Trinity Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Charlottesville, Virginia. In 1990, Clowney moved to Escondido, California, where he served as adjunct professor at Westminster Seminary California. In 2001, he took a full-time position as associate pastor at Christ the King Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Houston, Texas. After two years, he returned to Charlottesville, where he resumed part-time the post of theologian-in-residence at Trinity Presbyterian Church. He remained in this role until his death. Clowney was instrumental in the birth or growth of such ministries as the Reformed Theological Seminary in Aix-en-Provence, France; Westminster Seminary California; Trinity Church, Charlottesville; the Lausanne Conference; InterVarsity ministries, both in the United States and in England; and "The Westminster Ministerial Institute," an inner-city training program for pastors in Philadelphia, out of which was grown the Center for Urban Theological Studies. Clowney is remembered by many as a preacher, perhaps the most gifted proponent and practitioner of redemptive-historical preaching of this generation. His writing also displays the great theme of his life, namely Christ's presence in the whole of Scripture and his present work in the church. His books include Preaching and Biblical Theology, Called to the Ministry, Christian Meditation, Doctrine and the Church, The Message of 1 Peter, The Unfolding Mystery and Preaching Christ in All of Scripture. Clowney left a legacy not only of written book and articles, but also a great number of sermons and lectures, as well as magazine columns such as the humorous "Eutychus and His Pin" for Christianity Today and Bible studies for Tabletalk.

The author taught at Westminster Theological Seminary which should tell you something. The book explains in detail the doctrine of the church. What are the elders, what are the gifts, function, purpose, mission and existence of the church.

Well written with suburb content. Should be helpful to all who want to be a part of a God-honoring, Gospel proclaiming body of believers.

Clowney is always good, and he did not disappoint in this book. This book will revitalize your love for the Church.

I am a seminary student at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. This book was required reading for a theology class.I found it to be an average resource with limited original perspective and very little application. It was a decent review of the theology of the church, full of Bible references and following the Reformed perspective typical of this particular series.It did not engage the issues of women in ministry or the contemporary application of spiritual gifts to my satisfaction.I would only buy this book again if I needed a reference for Reformed theology on this topic. Most of the concepts and references in this resource can be found elsewhere to greater depth and with more engagement of alternative perspectives.Jonathan

In the past decade, it seems that I have been a part of churches that hit most of the stereotypes within Baptist circles. I worked as a youth intern in a fairly standard contemporary church. Went from that to being the college intern for a year in a church that probably looked about the same as it did in 1950. After that I headed up the college group for a couple of years at a place that did the whole seeker-sensitive/attractional thing, and now my wife and I have landed at an Acts29 plant. From that range of experience, I can tell you that there is a broad spectrum of ideas on what the church should look like. To be honest, for a long period of time I didn't know if there was an answer to that question. This confusion is one of the reasons the at reading Edmund Clowney's The Church was a great experience for me.This book will by no means address every question one may have about how a church should be set up, but it was never meant to. Instead, it broadly looks at what the Bible says as regarding the church to create a sound case for what should be true of every church, regardless of the specifics of polity, music style, or other specific issues. Instead, Clowney paints with broad strokes, looking at how the church is created thought the work of God before looking at the traditional attributes (one, holy, apostolic, and catholic/universal) and marks (preaching of the gospel and proper administration of the sacraments) of the church. Following this he turns to more practical issues, considering the church's relation to the world and some specific topics such as the sacraments and women in ministry.The book is an academic work, so it reads a little on the dry side, but the material in it is of tremendous value, especially in a time when it seems people consider their preferences and pragmatism to be as important as Scripture. Clowney's work points everything back to the Bible as the starting point for the discussion.Especially helpful to me was the discussion over the three aspects of the church's mission (worship to God, encouragement to believers, and evangelism to the world). In my experience, it seems one or more of these aspects is emphasized to the detrainment of the others, such as the popular statement that "the church is the only institution that exists for the sake of those outside itself." Clowney's work here helps correct these erroneous conclusions that are ultimately unhelpful.That is not to say that everything in this work is equally helpful. There are a few points on which I disagreed with the author, most notably during his discussion of infant baptism. For the most part, however, the book is broad enough that it does not take sides on the issues that have traditionally divided Protestant denominations. If you are looking for a work that is a strong introduction to Ecclesiology (the doctrine of the church) and don't mind reading something akin to a textbook, then The Church is worth your consideration.

In our culture, the church is almost irrelevant in the eyes of many Christians. It ultimately becomes a consumer item, and and people choose to attend the one that meets their "needs" the best. Dr. Clowney, a gifted scholar, gentle spirit, and dedicated churchman, has written an important work on what the church IS according to Scripture. Dr. Clowney, an ordained minister in the PCA, does not argue that any one denomination is the most biblical, instead, he shows what the Lord has called His church to be."If [the church] is to stand against the gates of hell, it must know its own divine charter, its bond to Jesus Christ, and the 'Holy Spiritual' power of its calling. For the church to be the church in the year 2000, it must be more than 'seeker-friendly'; it must be 'Seeker-sent', thrust forth by the Lord to bear his gospel of the cross to the peoples." (from the preface).Dr. Clowney deals with both the theological foundations of the church, and many issues that are controversial in Christendom today. But his arguments are Biblical, and his tone is gracious. Give this book a chance, and let the Lord use it to give you a greater love for the bride of Christ, his body- the church!
