With their talent for creating vivid, humorous images (amplified by cartoon drawings), they describe 14 major agers and how readers can use what is known about telomeres (which look like the plastic ends of shoelaces), mitochondria (the body's energy powerhouses) and other components of body functioning to repair and rejuvenate cells. The thesis of the book is pretty straightforward (page 3): "To add serious years to your life--and life to your years--you have to lower your risk for all diseases. And the only way to do that is to slow your rate of aging at the cellular level." Then (page 4), "After all, aging may be inevitable, but the rate of aging is certainly not." The authors are physicians themselves.The book features a number of items: "major agers" (facts that accelerate rather than retard the aging process), "You tests" (quick tests to assess where readers are on the aging scale), "You tips" (end of chapter actions and strategies designed to retard the aging process), "You tools" (e.g., anger management, quit smoking, medical tests needed, stress management, etc.). Finally, Part II focuses on action planning with that part entitled "The YOU extended warranty plan." Much of what is in this book is well known by many readers. Still, it does a service by pulling things together.Some You tips on page 41-45 are designed to enhance memory processes and thinking. Among which are: eat the right kind of foods (e.g., those high in omega-3 fats), load up on salads (emphasis to be on the vegetables, and not on dressing), add a dash of this and that (e.g., lycopene--from foods such as tomatoes and red apples, resveratrol--from red wine). On pumping up the immune system, some You tips from page 110: Eat shiitake mushrooms (to increase killer T cells), cruciferous vegetables (like broccoli or cabbage), catechins (found in green tea), ginger, quercetin (in onions and garlic). Again, some of these items are well know to us.To protect against cancer? Use Vitamin D, aspirin (low dosage), tomato sauce, and so on.On pages 320 and following, there are a set of action steps to take to retard the aging process. Not surprisingly, these include exercise, getting rid of bad fats and beefing up on good fats, do the Chi-gong workout, stop bad habits (like smoking), restrict caloric intake, and the like.You follow the advice in this book, the authors contend, and you will retard the aging process. And, indeed, much of what I read is very consistent with advice routinely given out by health experts, physicians, and others. There are some things that I had not read about before in this book (Chi-gong, for instance). Other items, such as eating cruciferous vegetables and items rich in lycopene are commonplace suggestions. This book is useful in bringing a wide array of anti-aging materials together. So, it's not a revolutionary work, but it does represent a nice synthesis of what we know (with a few original ideas thrown in for good measure).

This book is amazing. It shows me most things readers need to know about hair, skin, health and others. I'm a hair expert and I was right at the fact that not only is aging the factors of hair loss but also illnesses, stress, and other things like certain medications and surgery. Lots of people I know tease hair to make volumizing buns and bumps. It even shows info about Plantar Fasciitis. A video of Dr Oz testing the hair fall by pulling and seeing amount of hair while promoting the book in a talk show brought me to read it. I highly recommend it to experts on hair, skin and health.

It includes 8 great “You Tips” along with a great chart, which includes foods, nutrients, spices and supplements to boost your immune system. The chart also includes what you should avoid. You’ll also learn about the major ager “toxins” and you’ll learn how to keep sludge from seeping into your body.Chapter 5 “Cancel Out Cancer”. Learn about the p53 gene, that exist to combat cancer. This chapter contains 7 tips you can do now to reduce your chances of getting cancer.Chapter 6 “Breath Easy”. You’ll learn how to keep your lungs healthy. Do the test and see if your fingernails are clubbing. Clubbing could be caused by a lung, heart or intestine disease. This chapter includes 13 tools to help you quit smoking. Learn 4 tips to protect your lungs. Learn how excess glucose can age you.Chapter 7 covers diabetes. Learn 4 tips for lowing your risk of diabetes. A major ager is calorie consumption and slowing sirtuin.Chapter 8 is all about your gut. Learn how we loose our sense of smell and taste as we age. This chapter includes 4 tips to keep your innards running smoothly. Learn a major ager is neurotransmitter imbalance.Chapter 9 covers sleep. Take the test and see if you are “a real snoozer”. I sent an email and a sales woman called me. I didn’t go any further. The book list the complete panel of what will be measured through the test, along with the definitions of all the test you can have run for the Endocrine System and Metabolism; Cardiovascular System; Liver, Kidney and Muscle Function; Nutrients, Vitamins and Minerals; Inflammation; Complete Blood Count; and Telomere Length.In the YOU TOOL chapter you’ll find information on deep breathing and meditation; stress management; your vital supplements; how to detoxify your life (in every room of your home), as well as earth-friendly products to buy.In Chapter 18 – YOU Getting Stronger covers 18 exercises with 3 pages of cheat sheets. This is definitely an excellent owners manual for all women to help build self-esteem and confidence. It also is very educational as far as skin and hair beauty information. One of the most important things I have learned is that "You can't stop the aging process...but you can slow it down", with the tools and information Dr. Oz and Michael Roizen provide. I will always keep this book. I have learned so much about skin care...I just finished "YOU: Stress Less" so to be honest, I haven't finished this book yet, so I am still in the skin care section...learning what products to look for in moisturizers and cleansers and what to stay away from. I am a cosmetologist so I am privileged to learn this information I never learned in school. Every woman that cares about how she looks inside and out should own this book.

This book is mostly about the positive aspects of blitzscaling, and while it acknowledges the risks, it doesn't go into much depth to analyze lessons learned from blitzscaling failures.Reading this book reminded me of my own personal experience consulting for the search engine company AltaVista in the late 1990s. Many considered AltaVista to be the best search engine before Google really hit the scene. The venture capital company CMGi bought AltaVista and embarked on a major blitzscaling effort. CMGi wanted to compete with Yahoo to create a web directory portal for just about everything and spread resources wide and thin, and then allowed the AltaVista core search technology to get rusty. This created an opening for Google to dominate AltaVista with perfectionist attention to detail in search technology. In this particular case, AltaVista was the one attempting the (failed) blitzscaling while Google followed more traditional product perfection strategies.The book also made me think about the articles I've been reading in the Wall Street Journal regarding Tesla and Elon Musk's current challenges blitzscaling across so many different business areas -- especially with Model 3 production and their solar roof tile delays. Now I understand better why Elon Musk doesn't seem to care that much about perfecting product roll-out execution ahead of time, instead always thinking about the next futuristic revolution and then figure out the implementation as-it-goes. Coincidentally Elon Musk was also one of the founders of PayPal along with the author of this book. The book doesn't talk much about Tesla, but I can see the common philosophy. I can see why blitzscaling contributed to Tesla's success (so far).I take away a better understanding of why some companies engage in blitzscaling hyper growth as their #1 priority, and why this is such a powerful technique to overwhelm the competition. This book reveals some really interesting techniques to grow the customer base, organizational strategies depending on the size of the company, and management styles. There is good depth in this book with specific examples that the author curates for a course at Stanford University.Since there are a relatively small number of company founders/executives who have the funds to engage in a massive blitzscaling operation, I think most copies of this book will end up in these hands: 1. stock traders (including the everyday investor) who are looking to identify companies that are executing hyper growth strategies for better investment returns, and 2. people who enjoy reading interesting Silicon Valley business cases for insight on how this mysterious world of venture capital encourages companies to risk it all-or-nothing and take off like a rocket ship.Overall I highly recommend this book to learn the benefits of blitzscaling. It's very interesting to read, it's sometimes hard to put the book down because there's something useful on every page. Just don't expect much depth about companies that attempted blitzscaling and failed while trying, this book is more about success business cases.

Given the author's experience, I was disappointed to find Blitzscaling little more than a beginners overview of the well-known patterns around modern fast-growth companies. If you've never heard of Network Effects, Moore's Law, or Viral Effects, then you will find this an enlightening book. It explains these concepts and others like them quite well, but there is not much here that's new or especially insightful. The best use for this book would be in a community college course titled "Basics of Software Company Growth."

I'd bet almost everyone senior in Silicon Valley has come across Reid in their career. He's an indispensable member of the ecosystem as investor, operator, mentor, and thought leader. This book shares his gathered wisdom on the scaling of hypergrowth organizations in a fast-changing present to win the future. Not only essential reading for startup execs, but also for general business folks who need to grapple w/the role of technology disrupting their business.

There are some excellent management insights regarding blitzscaling your organization touching critical areas such as management innovation, business model innovation, and hiring practices. However, the rest of the book is less practical. By that I mean the book includes general advice, higher level talk or unpractical arguments on important issues regarding blitzscaling such as social responsibility, addressing the competition which also can use blitzscaling, resource management etcetera. However, as mentioned above, these areas are touched on a high level and fail on giving practical examples of how these tips and tricks are used in reality. I am sure the authors will follow-up with a practical guide but until then I give it a 4 star.

Blitzscaling, The Lightning-Fast Path To Building Massively Valuable Companies, by Reid Hoffman and Chris Yeh, is a compelling read whose thesis states if a company has access to ample capital and the potential opportunity to capture most or all of a market, it should prioritize growth speed over efficiency, and accept, even ignore the inefficiencies and non-life-threatening fires that come along with it.Blitzscaling is a counterintuitive strategy that goes against many classic old-school business techniques as you need to accept operating inefficiencies and uncertainties in exchange for speed. “When a market is up for grabs, the risk isn’t inefficiency – the risk is playing it too safe. If you win, efficiency isn’t that important; if you lose, efficiency is completely irrelevant.”The book discusses many of the most well-known, fastest growing and currently most valuable companies, including: Airbnb, Alibaba, Amazon, Apple, Dropbox, Facebook, Google, LinkedIn/Microsoft, Netflix, PayPal, Uber and others. A couple years ago when Uber was raising money at a $60 billion private valuation, it may have been difficult to understand the astronomical valuation, but Blitzscaling presents a solid argument for it. If Uber uses inexpensive capital to subsidize both sides of the market when it enters a new city, it has a substantially stronger likelihood of quickly capturing significant share. Uber has a chicken and egg scenario as both sides of the market need to be built simultaneously for Uber to be successful. Uber needs to recruiter drivers to ‘supply’ rides, needs to acquire customers (‘demand’ for rides). By utilizing economical capital to subsidize drivers (paying drivers a higher percentage or bonuses as additional incentives to join the platform) and subsidizing passengers (with cheaper rides to incentivize them to try the new platform), Uber achieves massive momentum from dual-sided network effects.The story of Airbnb is fascinating, and an area that can easily be overlooked is how customer-obsessed they were from the very beginning. “Paul Graham, the cofounder of Y Combinator, wrote a famous essay in which he advised entrepreneurs to do things that don’t scale.” This advice may seem counterintuitive (especially in a book about Blitzscaling), but it is vital to developing an optimal product. When your business is small you want to can into a customer’s complete experience to understand everything the customer thinks and desires. Airbnb realized that listings are more successful if they are accompanied by professional photographs, so founders Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia, in the beginning knocked on customer’s doors to photograph their homes. Obviously, the founders could not personally scale to photograph all Airbnb listings, but it allowed them to truly get to know and understand their customers (listen to Brian Chesky’s fantastic talk on Reid Hoffman’s Master of Scale podcast titled Handcrafted. Their Obama O’s and Captain McCain’s were brilliant gorilla fundraises and the 11-star experience demonstrates their obsession with customer experience).Possibly the company to most successfully implement Blitzscaling (although the term did not exist at the time) is Amazon. Amazon’s substantial access to capital through inexpensive public funds as well as generated revenue allowed it to build out its massive infrastructure and best-in-class fulfillment systems. Throughout the years, Amazon was constantly criticized for not consistently showing ‘Wall Street profits’ while it utilized these inexpensive funds to subsidize its distribution and logistics expenses, as well as the fees it charged third-party sellers, to capture an astonishing portion of US online market sales. Currently about fifty cents of every new dollar online is spent on the Amazon platform. In addition, due to this market dominance, Amazon continually recaptures these earlier subsidized dollars by squeezing the margins of third party resellers (who, in aggregate, account for more sales on the Amazon platform than goods sold directly by Amazon). Blitzscaling is difficult to implement, and the likelihood of failure far exceeds success, however this risk is compensated for by the massive rewards that can be achieved from its success.

Elizabeth comes alive as an interesting, thinking, caring woman determined to save the best of the culture and the education of the Carolina Low Country. Through her eyes you see the eventual degradation of the society from it's previous level of political and economic leadership in the United States to the genteel poor lucky enough to have resources in the land and water to sustain life. If you want to understand the real role of the south before the war and the effects of reconstruction on society today, then this book is a must read.

This is an absolutely wonderful book. The text is fresh and "sassy" and the beautiful acrylic paintings are vibrant and joyful. "Where the big velvet roses bloom red and pink and fuchsia, where the accordion plays sassy and sweet, where the smell of crispy tacos or buttery tortillas or juicy fruta floats out of every window, and where the paleta wagon rings its tinkly bell and carries a treasure of icy paletas in every color of the sarape...That's my barrio!" A delightful double spread shows the paleta wagon filled with popsicles of every imaginable color, and three eager children rushing to choose a flavor. Read this book aloud; and children and adults alike will remember their cool "paletas" with pleasure.

This is one of my 4 yr old grandson's favorite books, I can read it to him over and over again and he doesn't tire of hearing it. The illustrations are beautiful and bright, and the written content is easy for any child to follow. A great way to learn Spanish, or English, as it is bi-lingual. The book inspires you to want to go out and get a "paleta" (popsicle), especially on a warm day. Definitely a fun book to have.

It was what I expected, my granddaughter, age 6, thought it was great to help her learn Spanish. Loved the story.

Great book with beautiful illustrations. My two year old loves this book. There is one page that I skip, though, I know it may seem uptight but I'm trying to teach my kiddos to be great people so I skip the page where her uncle wins a baseball game by offering the batter a popsicle to distract him so her uncle wins the game (cheating). I know, I know... a lot of you will roll your eyes but that's me and that's how I'm raising my kids! With that tiny exception I love this book.

This colorful picture book brought smiles to my grandchildrens faces, ages 3, 4, 6 and 10. With the book written in both english and spanish it allowed me to read it to my grandchildren in both languages, assisting me in the continued teaching of the spanish language. The demand in learning the spanish language is increasing Tafolla and Morales did a wonderful job at covering the a small portion of what happens in a barrio in both languages. I know a great book when I read it and put it down and my grand children pick it up to read it again and again. They asked questions, participated, learned and discussed, happily being rewarded with a paleta.

This is a wonderful laboratory manual. In regards to other people's reviews... this is NOT meant to be a replacement for the textbook. It is difficult to read by itself but if you read the actual textbook and follow along with the laboratory manual, it makes perfect sense! And the answers are available on Evolve's website. Just follow the instructions on the inside flap of the manual. I highly recommend this laboratory manual to help with retaining the information in the actual textbook. It may be redundant a bit, but redundancy has been shown to help with cognitive memory.***EDIT 3/28/16***After contacting Evolve Customer Support, I have been informed that the answers to the Lab Manual's exercises are only available in the Instructor's resources. The answers that you can access are for the Test Yourself Questions in the textbook, not the lab manual. I still highly recommend this lab manual because it does help reiterate things for me. If you want the answers to the Lab Manual exercises, please contact your instructor. Or you could just take a bit more time and recheck your work to see if you are correct.

Required text book, boring but informative, some funny text in some sections. Clear pictures with good information (some answers for questions are under those pictures/graphs). Unfortunatly teacher pointed out that in this book there was biased information about reactions to manufactured hormones given to cattle.

I got this book after reading some recommendations through the community site at Penn Foster. I am glad I got it, it is filled with so much information. I know it will be alot to learn, but this book is certainly going to help me. The only bad thing is that there is no answer key to check your answers. Oh well, makes me work even harder.

I've tried a couple other physiology books but this is the first one to actually teach while putting all the information in perspective at the same time. You learn about issues of the blood while understanding how various animals are affected by them, and a thousand other things in the same manner! I'd also swear that whoever put it together had people with ADHD like me in mind because it seems to move quickly, and yet go over again the information you learned in an earlier part, allowing me to not get bored or bound up in any one spot but still learn all the information.

I find this textbook very readable. It is technical enough to learn what I need to learn. Yet "dumbs" it down enough to make it understandable. It isn't super thick, yet it is packed full of information and pictures.

This book is FANTASTIC! The chapters are organized very well. It is easy to read and really breaks everything down in ways that are easy to understand. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about this book.

If only I had of known this book was available in the beginning I would of bought it straight away. Using this book alongside my other training manuals has made a huge difference in learning. This book surprised me with how invaluable it is, the content and the way it is structured has made a huge difference to the way I am learning and how I am learning. I would recommend this book for any veterinary assistant or veterinary technician, starting out or even half way through your studies.

Came brand new and shipped with the corresponding textbook, everything looks great and it is very helpful, mandatory for my class
