I bought this book after reading "Becoming a Welcoming Church." The author recommended this book at the end, and suggested using it as a gift for guests to your church. I think the info is good, but I would want my church to live out the principles explained, rather than have someone else read about it. Basically, the book could seem hypocritical if your church gives a book that says all the ministries and means to get connected, but hasn't implemented any of them. If you are a church looking for ways to connect with new people, and what message your actions should be showing for guests, this book will provide some good insight.I bought "Becoming a Welcoming Church", "We Want You Here", and "Autopsy of a Deceased Church" at the same time. All the books compliment each other nicely. My church is looking to make some changes, and this provided great insight. I am purchasing copies of all 3 for my church elders to start a discussion on vision, mission, and purpose.
I picked up a copy to read as a possible book to give away to visitors. My honest opinion is that no visitor will take the time to actually read it. I liked it, I appreciate the sentiment, and it's perhaps a great book to have church members read to remind them of what our attitude should be...but not something to give to a visitor. It struck me as more pandering to them.
Great summation of what a person should be able to experience in church! Resource that any church could benefit from.
Great book
Read it! Do it!
This attractive hardback is a resource to put in the hands of visitors to your church. Thom Rainer, who has provided so many church resources, wrote this book. Since guests have such a wide variety of backgrounds, it took a lot of skill to pitch this book at a level that could catch the attention of many. It seems to me that Rainer pulled it off.The first chapter gives five good reasons that the visitor is wanted at your church. Chapter 2 is one that not so much lowers expectations as it changes expectations. Gone is the idea that the church is a place of perfect people, yet there remains the high expectation that we as broken people will be loving to the broken people who visit us. Chapter 3 advertises the beauty of relationship. Chapter 4 talks about strengthening families in the context of the variety of family situations. Chapter 5 introduces God and is gently evangelistic. Chapter 6 encourages coming and being part of it while the last chapter thanks them for coming. The chapters are short and easy to read without sacrificing what needs communicating. It’s classic Rainer. As a pastor, I’d be happy to put this attractive resource in visitor’s hands.I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.
Thom S. Rainer designed "We Want You Here" (a companion to "Becoming a Welcoming Church") as a gift for churches to give visitors. Most church attendees are familiar with “welcome kits†containing everything from candy to pens to coffee mugs. Rainer suggests giving each visitor his book (which B&H Publishers offers bulk discounts on).The book opens with a quick explanation:“I get it. Many of you who read this will think, I don’t think this was the guy we heard preach last Sunday—was it? No, you are not crazy. I am not the local church pastor in your community. But I am connected to the church you visited.â€Rainer goes on to briefly mention how all followers of Christ are connected to each other and how he leads an online community of pastors: “I learned that the pastors in our online community are very concerned about finding the most effective way to say to guests who visit their church…‘We Want You Here.’ So I wrote this book as a way to help those of us who care about church guests.â€The rest of the book goes on as if it were being written from the perspective of the church, but it’s hard for me to get past the fact that the book is not directly from the church. If I am visiting a church, I don’t want a welcome from someone connected to the church but from the church itself. The content itself is good; I was just left wondering if a book is the best delivery method.I’d recommend, at the very least, that churches who use the book include a welcome letter from a pastor that mentions why they felt the book’s message is valuable to the recipient.Church leaders who are a little hesitant to hand out the book may still find the book helpful to read. The contents may inspire ideas for other welcoming messages. Here’s a look at the table of contents:• Chapter 1: We Really Want You Here• Chapter 2: This is Not a Place for Perfect People• Chapter 3: We Would Like to Get to Know You• Chapter 4: This is Where Families Grow Strong• Chapter 5: Getting to Know the One Who Made Us• Chapter 6: Come Make a Difference with Us• Chapter 7: Thank You for Being HereBefore diving into this book, however, I’d recommend first reading "Becoming a Welcoming Church." Both books were released at the same time and intended to be used together. "Becoming a Welcoming Church" is a valuable guide filled with ways churches can become more welcoming, whereas "We Want You Here" is one of many possible tools churches may use toward that goal. (Disclaimer: I received a free review copy of the book from the publisher, but all opinions expressed are my own.)
