Review
"Relational and Body-Centered Practices for Healing Trauma is a remarkably compelling blend of interdisciplinary theory and applied case material. The science is accurate, and the clinical material is absorbing. Sharon Stanley’s integration of anthropological and cultural material with relational body techniques is unique. This book will have an indelible impact on the field." Allan Schore, PhD, author of Affect Regulation and the Origin of the Self and The Science of the Art of Psychotherapy "Sharon Stanley has written a brilliant and comprehensive testament to the absolute necessity of including the somatic connection between the body and the brain in healing trauma. She explores the emerging literature linking the neurophysiology of the fight/flight limbic system, the autonomic nervous system, and the right-brain centers for procedural memory and modulation of arousal with techniques that re-regulate homeostasis. Detailed case studies provide a manual for specific body-based interventions. This book is a must read for therapists." Robert Scaer, MD, author of The Trauma Spectrum and The Body Bears the Burden "What a marvelous book! Relational and Body-Centered Practices for Healing Trauma is an amazing integration of developmental neuroscience and clinical psychotherapy. Well written and engaging, it provides plenty of examples to facilitate applied understanding in somatic healing. It will be an excellent resource for clinicians of all stripes, with step-by-step illustrations of therapeutic approaches." Darcia Narvaez, PhD, author of Neurobiology and the Development of Human Morality: Evolution, Culture, and Wisdom

April 6, 2016.As a practicing psychiatrist I give thanks that Western mind-science now has the courage to scientifically embrace and explore the living phenomena that are the deepest foundation of our fullest subjective experience of being alive without first chopping them up into pieces that will fit into the neat little boxes of the DSM-V.Embodying this wisdom and courage, Dr. Sharon Stanley wisely speaks from her obviously vast body of personal, clinical and academic experience. This beautifully written book is a remarkably accessible, eloquent and uncluttered delivery of the solid scientific news from the leading edge of modern evidence-based psychology. It is clear, cogent, timely, and eminently practical instruction for any student of psychology or psychotherapist who is still deeply curious about life's abundant gifts of joy and sorrow, and is striving to help others survive trauma and thrive into durable, robust and empowered healing and vitality. As her teaching so easily and convincingly describes, this leading scientific edge of psychological inquiry is in the body. Dr. Stanley's book is a sterling example of excellent science being built upon the abundant hypothesis-generating inspirations from many wise and ancient teachings of the world's indigenous cultures and spiritual traditions. These clearly re-connect us to our bodies, each other and all the fellow inhabitants of the more-than-human environment of planet earth. The potential of Dr. Stanley’s text to strongly influence cross-cultural flow of trauma healing therapeutic knowledge is unique in my experience.Within that large frame of reference, Dr. Stanley's exceedingly well documented text draws those ancient teachings into natural confluence with the current scientific master-works of the most luminous explorer/scientist/clinician's alive today. The vast range and scientific reliability of citations for all of Dr. Stanley's clear conceptualizations and practical therapeutic methodology elaborations is evidence of a gifted teacher/clinician's mind that is comfortable at the macro- and micro- levels of life inquiry.Dr. Stanley is much, much more than capable of connecting these spheres of knowledge in an engaging and understandable manner. I particularly recommend Dr. Stanley's book become the foundational text for all college and master's level training programs for the next generation of psychotherapists, psychology researchers, and psychiatrists. And, because the application of the intentional embodiment of awareness with compassion methodology is not dependent upon esoteric concepts or jargon, a robust cross-cultural flow of it's contained scientific and interpersonally therapeutic wisdom should be easily achieved.
This is a terrific book for anyone interested in trauma, the latest neuroscience, and strategies for working with the autonomic nervous system. No one writing today understands the importance of relationship and how much safety is a function of the quality of intersubjective space better than Sharon Stanley. Her strategies for working with clients are enormously helpful and very clearly explained. I also appreciate very much her thoughts about spirituality. She speaks from her own experience and never proselytizes or preaches. However, like Donald Kalsched, she is curious and open about energies and intelligences in the psyche that, I believe, are vital to the process of deep healing. She absolutely is on the cutting edge of trauma theory and practice. Her book will have a significant impact on the field.
Excellent Book, I have also done her trainings. This is one of the very best books on the topic, helpful for practice not just theory
Dr. Stanley’s book is a gamechanger. Read this book if you want a synthesis of current research on the neuroscience of trauma and arousal and a fresh approach to the treatment of trauma that draws on ancient wisdom. As Adverse Childhood Events (ACES) are gaining attention as a major contributor to chronic diseases in adulthood, this work is more relevant now than ever. I found the personal stories to be very helpful in demonstrating what this approach looks like in action.
This book is a resource for any therapist. There are neuro-science, cultural, therapeutic, and interpersonal applications in this book, which have many possible adaptations. I highly recommend it.
This book pulls together contemporary research, and clinical application. Lots of useful interventions, and good theoretical support.
Sharon's ability to translate the teachings of neuroscience to practice is outstanding. This book offers a host of practices for therapists committed to greater embodiment in their practice, particularly as it pertains to attachment work.
This book has been life- and career-enlightening. I have had to take my time reading it because each page is so filled with wisdom, knowledge, and thought-provoking perspectives.
