Review

“An outrageously funny, irreverent, over-the-top comic mystery.”—Sun Sentinel“A s**tload of hilarious fun.”—The Kentucky Democrat “As bizarre as their adventures are, there's a strange sense of believability…That helps keep the story fresh and the pages turning…Creative, unusual and over the top.” —The Associated Press “Rare political satire…With world affairs in the toilet, Barry and Zweibel bring us what we need: comic relief.”— The Boston Globe

Loved this book! This is a fast paced, hilarious, and full of surprises book. The book is written from the perspective of the two main characters. One author describes the events through one character. The other author describes the same events through the other character. If you have seen "The Affair" on Showtime then think of this book like that....except absolutely hilarious.I loved the two characters because of how different they are. The events they go through get more and more ridiculous and obviously would never happen in the real world, but when Dave Barry is writing then the world is one messed up place.Very fun book. Great for vacation or the beach

This is one of the funniest and rowdiest things I've seen from Dave Barry (everything he does is great though, he is a very funny man). I listened to 'Lunatics' on my Kindle (text to speech, while working) and then bought the audio CD. My son-in-law and I took a 1,600 mile roadtrip. The book only lasted about 2 of the 4 days but those 2 days were full of laughs. Thanks Dave, you're NUTS!It, if faithful to the book, would make a GREAT MOVIE (Forrest Gump ish).

WARNING: Do not read "Lunatics" on crowded public transportation, in doctors' waiting rooms, or - heaven forbid - church. You WiLL chortle, snort, and laugh. Out loud. You will be the subject of glares, frowns, and disapproving harrumphs. On the other hand, the book is worth the embarrassment. This is a flat-out funny book featuring two very different men: one a prim and virtuous pet store owner about whom the phrase "politically correct" may have been coined, and the other a crude, narcissistic, and socially-inappropriate "forensic plumber," i.e., a plumber who testifies in court cases. From their first meeting, these two detest one another, but circumstances repeatedly throw them together under the most unusual and hilarious circumstances. Together, this inept duo ends up front and center on the world stage, repeatedly and unintentionally affecting everything from zoo animals to national and international security interests.I've always liked Dave Barry but the addition here of co-author Zweibel, a renowned comic writer, has added a deeper and more sustained note of hilarity to the book. For good or ill, this one has "future movie" written all over it. But there is no way a movie could be as good as this book.If you are a somber soul, don't bother with this book, but if you revel in riotous ridiculousness, this is the book for you.

...like an origami fake poo. One thing you can count on from Dave Barry, which he delivers flawlessly here, is the relentless downhill momentum of the plot. He starts the ball rolling with a simple misunderstanding between strangers, which gains momentum as it travels through the book, picking up a wide cast of improbable characters and echoes of current events until it quite logically reaches a quite illogical finale. My two favorite parts are Jimmy Carter (the dog) and the Sarah Palin Incident, both of which are laugh-until-you-tear-up and share-with-your-friends funny. Is it gross? You betcha. But the gross jokes are FUNNY, unlike many movies and books I could name. When I first started reading, I thought that the format (there are two narrators and they take turns narrating chapters) would get annoying, but the two lunatics were so different and had such unique voices that I found myself enjoying the changeover at each chapter. I highly recommend this book for the reader who's not too proud to enjoy a well-plotted and well-paced novel with a whiff of the gross.

This book is written in first person, with the two main characters narrating alternate chapters. It is fast paced, with one hilarious gag after another. While this is not great literature, it is totally funny. Every aspiring humor writer should read this.It is the story of two men, a forensic plumber and a pet shop owner (whose store is named "The Wine Shop"), who get into a series of over-the-top adventures that take them all around the world. It is James Bond meets Abbott and Costello. I won't give away any of the plot, but I will say that they overturn Fidel Castro, stop a major terrorist attack and shake up the communist world before they finally get back home. The laughs are largely of the slapstick variety, with a little bathroom humor thrown in, and there is a great deal of earthy language. These things might offend some people. But no piece of humor, even the best, will please everyone. I found myself laughing out loud while reading this, and so will a lot of other people. If you want an easy read that is also drop-dead hilarious, this is the book.

Immature? Definitely. I loved how the book jumps situations very quickly and you find yourself in highly unlikely scenarios that are always hilarious. Oh - and loads of profanity involving an incredibly despicable character that I found very entertaining. It's incredibly silly, this book, is filled with generally offensive humor. I know some friends I could recommend this to, but to some I absolutely wouldn't, if you are a "serious" person, maybe it's not for you. I'm glad I bought it.

This book is profane, has a plot that is impossible to take seriously, appears to have been written during a party that featured a lot of alcohol, and was so funny that my wife thought I was having a medical emergency when she found me unable to stop laughing loudly as I tried to read it. It was not until I had run out of breath that I was able to continue. Barry's ability to sketch scenes that are so outlandish as to defy logic, yet so enjoyable funny you can't stop reading them, is beyond compare. This book won't win any literary prizes, but anyone in dire need of a full-blown, paralyzing laugh, should buy it immediately. I don't recommend reading it in a public setting, such as on a passenger plane, or bus, as it may lead to a law enforcement episode.

It was obvious the author did a lot of research, but the information needed to be more orderly. It jumped all over the place except for a couple of chapters which were specific in nature. It wasn't written well enough to be enjoyed purely for entertainment purposes, and it isn't organized well enough to make it efficient as study or research material. The vintage illustration are what saved it from being two stars for me.

From its misleading title--this volume is rather slender given its claim for being "complete"--to its lack of bibliographic notes and historical and factual unreliability, Ashley's tome is an utter mess. Poorly written and organized, with only a three-page index, this is a book that cannot be taken seriously. "Devils and Demons," in fact, seems like a haphazard collection of the author's notes on interesting trivia he happened to bounce on, without bothering to reexamine his sources or concern himself with the formalities of English grammar. For example, in his brief discussion of C.S. Lewis's "Screwtape Letters," Ashley describes Lewis's book as "a delightful collection of business communications between a minor devil called Screwtape and his boss," evidently forgetting that Screwtape was a "major" devil corresponding to his underling nephew, Wormwood, as anyone even slightly familiar with the literature of fictional demonology knows. Such sloppy errors that are sprinkled through Ashley's work brings the subject down to the level of tabloid journalism, and with the same level of reliability. The reader would best be served by searching for other, more scholarly books which are abundant in this peculiar area of study, such as the "Compendium Maleficarum" or Robbins' "Encyclopedia of Witchcraft and Demonology." But "The Complete Book of Devils and Demons" is a complete waste of dead trees.

It was everything I expected and enjoy it immensely. Would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in this subject.

i got this for my bother inlaw and he loves it. he says he cant put it down. its one of his favs

Great information, honestly most people will be very happy with this compilation. I love the way Ashley writes & presents his information. Quite a fan.

This actually is a VERY good book, despite the fact that I only gave it 3 stars. My only problems with the book were:Format - The format is VERY difficult to follow at first, don't give up on it though. Once you understand how he put the book together, it's not so bad. My other problem with the format was that it's not the most efficient way to present the information.needless information, or information better placed elsewhere - Admit it, run on sentences with parenthesis all over the place ARE hard to follow. Theres not alot of this, but it's there. Also, acknowledgments and other suggested reading would be better placed together at the back of the book, instead of being scattered throughout the chapter within the material brought forth.Otherwise, as long as you've either studied this subject before, or are well educated, you can get whatever you need from this book. Once you get past all these distractions it is quite some exceptional reading.

The book is a good reference point for those looking into this subject for the first time. While the author provides a lot of information, her style in presenting it leaves something to be desired. The book format is put together in such a way that it makes it difficult for the reader to follow. There are also a lot of errors in grammar like misspelled words and run-on sentences. It seems the author would have noticed this, but I guess he was in a hurry. If you can live with the format then you may want to check it out. However, you may want to try "Encyclopedia of Hell" by Miriam Van Scott.

Leonard Ashley's pathetic excuse of designing this book for the "sound bite" and "limited attention span" generation is an insult and affront to his readers. The book is nothing but a mish-mash and mosaic of information culled from the Internet that the author has so carelessly put together. For beginners and the uninitiated- this might briefly prove interesting- but in general- this book is a sleeping pill in disguise.
