Review

"A gripping story." ―Kirkus Reviews"A solid entry in the perennially popular canon of real-life adventure stories."―Booklist"A riveting tale of survival."―BookPage"This would be a great read at the beach on a hot summer day...An interesting sage of survival against formidable odds."―Washington Post"[An] excellent volume...Murphy crafted a volume that is superbly written, thoroughly researched, and is unique within this popular genre. Crane's incredible story of survival deserves to be known by a far greater audience. That is why 81 Days Below Zero is such a valuable contribution."―Military Review"[A] thrilling true story...Many have been the tales of man against nature, the struggle for survival among icy peaks in a howling wilderness--some fictitious (Jack London's "To Build a Fire"), others far too true ("Alive"). Few if any have chronicled such an epic battle as this, the journey of a lone airman from near death to life, in the course of which might be seen a series of miracles, fortified by his indomitable will to survive...It is a well-told tale."―Roanoke Times"A primer for anyone looking for information on extreme weather survival."―New York Journal of Books"Murphy vividly describes Crane's World War II Alaskan ordeal."―Military Officer"Leon Crane's amazing story is recounted in great detail. The author relates the young aviator's harrowing tale in smooth prose, which beckons the reader to continue reading. There are many survival stories of airmen and sailors adrift at sea and how they beat the odds. This story reveals how one flyer endured an experience just as extreme and lived to tell about it."―World War II History Magazine"[Murphy] manages to transport the reader to a cold and isolated arctic landscape through vivid descriptions...A satisfying read for military aviation buffs and anyone with an interest in Alaska history during the war years."―Alaska History

The author has done an enormous amount of research and, unfortunately, is determined to use every last bit of it. Some of it is pertinent, most isn't. Some of it makes for interesting trivia, most of it doesn't.

I love adventure stories! Sadly, this one falls flat, considering the potential for a great story. The author seemed intent to wander endlessly, back and forth, barely sparing a few paragraphs on the subject of this man's trial, before he wandered back to another time, another person, and on and on it went! If the book were from a free source, I'd say "Yes", but for $15.00, I just have to say "Check the library", or find another book. This one is a test!

As one who supplied some of the information that Brian Murphy incorporated in his book, I have several comments. First, it is a very good "read," written by one who is quite skilled in narrative writing. Second, although the backbone of facts is true, it is more in the category of "historical novel" than true story. I would compare its "truth" to the way in which Bernard Cornwall includes a framework of facts in his "Sharp" novels ... facts fleshed out with imagined or extrapolated, plausible, filler generated by the author. I grew up in Fairbanks, and my father is the R. C. Ragle mentioned in connection with the Ladd Field Air Search and Rescue and the Cold Weather Test operation. Murphy's material about being alone and on one's own in the Charley Creek drainage in midwinter ring true to me. Crane was very lucky to have stumbled across the trappers' cabins and caches, but it is my guess he wouldn't have survived without them.

The author recounts an amazing survival tale of a WWII air pilot that survives 81 days in the Alaskan wilderness. All the research for the book was done posthumous to the main character, Leon Crane. This is an impressive display of research and reading this quilted story is satisfactory amazement in itself.I enjoyed the book because I learned about the Alaskan wilderness and contemplated temperatures I would never even dream of experiencing. To learn of rivers producing and cracking four feet thick ice and -50 F temperatures is just awe inspiring. I also enjoyed learning the war history and the relevance of Alaska’s geography and the role it played in Russian-American relations during the time. I had not idea Alaska was even relevant to WWII but it really was an important military hub that helped the efforts to defeat Hitler.I will contemplate Leon’s survival instincts for a long time and wonder if I would be able to last as long as he had. His level-headed decision-making at different points in his journey was phenomenal. His incredible will to live during his journey is an inspiration, and after he was returned to base, his humility as described by the author is just fantastic.Lastly, I enjoyed the book because here in New England, temperatures have recently dropped to sub zero and while I would very much like to complain, I found myself incapable of whining about my circumstance as I was reading about this man, Lean Crane, who survived much worse on much less. The book has left me with a lasting gratitude on life and appreciation for my own comfortable surroundings! It’s a pretty easy and fast read. I recommend it! There are parts in the book where I think "ok the author is really far-reaching his research", but this weakness is easy to overlook if you focus on the primary story.

On December 21, 1943, Leon Crane and the rest of the crew of his B-24 bomber took off from Ladd field in Alaska. The purpose of their mission was to run tests on the propellers of the plane. The mission ended in disaster; the plane crashed and Crane was the only survivor. In this book, author Brian Murphy describes the flight, crash, and Crane's struggle to survive.Crane managed to bail out of the stricken bomber, but he was not nearly prepared for what he was about to endure. He had forgotten his cold-weather mittens, and all he had of consequence with him were 40 matches and a boy scout pocket knife. For the next 81 days, Crane somehow managed to survive in Alaska's harsh wilderness. He used his parachute to sleep in and carefully rationed his matches for making fires. Fortunately, he stumbled upon an abandoned cabin which contained food and other useful items. It wasn't until much later that he came upon a person living in the wilderness who was able to help him get back to his base."81 Days Below Zero" is a harrowing tale of endurance and survival. The book not only tells Crane's story, but also that of crash investigators that searched over the plane years later. These investigators were also able to discover other human remains within the wreckage and have them positively identified. This book serves as a testament to Crane's struggle to survive, endure the unendurable, and emerge healthy and strong. Highly recommended.

I am nearly three-fourths the way finished with the book and about two-thirds of that has been bits of history on the war and backgrounds on some of the characters, including Cranes parents. Not much yet devoted to actually survival and his struggles in the wilderness. It is worth reading to me because I love the period and the true stories of what numerous persons went through to survive the war. May be a little premature in my review but I doubt the ending can make up for more than three stars.

It was okay - but the author spends most of the book regaling you with information about other early flying narratives and stuff in bush pilot days in Alaska - as apparently there wasn't enough to make an actual book out of the hero (Lt Leon Crane)'s exploits of surviving a B-24 plane crash in WWII on Alaska's frozen wilderness to do that on its own. In my opinion there is too little on Crane and too much on others lives, but it's readable. I finished it though in one day.

Ms. Gilliam shares her experience as the first African American woman in the newspaper business at the Washington Post. She accurately overlays the many changes in the American society for African Americans. Ms. Gilliam acknowledges the many people who supported her during her career and offers other supports in her life which brought her peace and joy.

Great read and one that opened my eyes to the difficulties and challenges faced by people of color in the media. Clearly under reported and misunderstood by many. Worth the read.

I have been reading the autobiographies of women suffragists from the late 1800s and early 1900s, and this book by Dorothy Butler Gilliam reminded me of the writing of these women. It's earnest and detailed, and packed with great information. But it is also disorganized, rambling and lacking a narrative structure. Events are related with little judgment made as to their narrative value. I wish the author's editors had stepped in and shaped the story into a cohesive linear narrative. The book jumps around in time, and material is repeated. When I read, "As previously mentioned," it's a red flag to me of the need for stronger editing. As an example, the book begins with Gilliam arriving at The Washington Post in 1961, but within a few pages backtracks to the 1950s, Gilliam's graduation from college and an extended treatment of civil rights activity in the decades leading up to her time at the paper. It then returns to her graduate work at Columbia, and then backward into more civil rights battles of the previous decade. Next, she's back at the Post describing her editors, then she skips ahead and pastes in a brief story she wrote in 1962. Then we return to her earlier newspaper jobs, with extended character studies of her editors at previous newspapers. It ends with her marriage during her second year at the Post.Every chapter has this whipsawing timeline. It was hard to keep track of the narrative thread of the author's life. The reader doesn't get to her childhood and upbringing until almost 80 pages into the book, so you don't really get an idea of who this person is before being plunged into her adult life. I would have liked some grounding earlier on. A straightforward narrative would have served this author better. She had a front-row seat to many of the biggest civil rights stories of the day and this book details these events from her unique point of view. It gets across her growing interest in covering racial stories, a focus that she thought she wanted to avoid. At first, she didn't seem to relish the action of the civil rights movement. She relates how she went to Oxford, Mississippi, while the fight was on to deny James Meredith a place at Ole Miss in 1962. She says she didn't attempt to interview Meredith, and in fact, "felt a pang of relief as we left the campus." But from these early experiences, and from watching other African American reporters work, she gained confidence and fully committed herself to stories of racial discrimination and unrest. What interested me the most, and what I got the least of, was what it was like working in a white newsroom as the sole black female reporter. Perhaps her colleagues are still living, and she wanted to be discreet, but I would have liked to spend more time in the newsroom. In an early chapter, she talks about how difficult it was to simply file a story because she could not get a cab driver to stop for her so that she could get to and from the newsroom. In another section, she mentions briefly how she was "assigned" a female friend in the newsroom so that she would have someone to go to lunch with. These are the kind of telling anecdotes I would have liked more of. She does relate her difficulties reporting stories on assignment, particularly in the South, and it's shocking to read of how African Americans were treated, no matter how many times you encounter it.I have an early copy of the book, so I'm hoping more editing is in the works. In addition to the repetition, it seems like the book hasn't been checked for continuity. For example, in the first chapter, Gilliam mentions the Supreme Court decision that desegregated the nation's schools in 1954. She does not mention the case by name. Yet the term "post-Brown" appears later in the text without the Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka case ever being named. And in the very last sentence of the book, the author says to white readers, "Don't be afraid of the African American voice, be an ally. Racial equality, diversity and inclusion benefit you." It's a great sentiment, but unexplored in the narrative. How does the African American voice benefit whites? Should whites want to hear African American voices because it benefits them? And why address just white readers? It's a vague, unsatisfying ending. A book by a pioneering journalist deserves closer attention so that her message comes through loud and clear.

Gilliam's new book about her life as the first black woman journalist at The Washington Post is compelling and eloquent while simultaneously being a superb history lesson. Yes, she tells of the civil rights movement and her experience of segregation, but she also manages to make her own story as riveting as the tumultuous time. She began working for the black press, then was hired by the Post in 1961 and went on to become an editor, a columnist and an organizer and nationally known leader for the next generation of minority reporters. She knew her own painful experience of being targeted because of her race and gender, and she became determined to change the world because the injustice was still prevalent. Her ability to tell a story is undeniable. The risks she took, the courage and grace she displayed, and how she solved the myriad challenges she faced make for an epic narrative. There's no boasting. There's just practical detail. In the 60s in DC, white cab drivers won't pick her up, so she uses her shorthand and fast typing skills to make up the time lost to get her stories in on deadline. She ignores the bigots or confronts them directly, as when a doorman coldly tells her to use the maid's entrance "In the back" when she goes to interview a white woman celebrating her 100th birthday. There are mentors and supporters in her journey, men and women, white and black, and she is generous in her descriptions of them. Noted is the fact that because of sit-ins, marches, Selma, integration of colleges and later, women's liberation, black reporters gain more ground throughout the 70s because newspapers and TV have to cover these stories. Not everything she writes about black culture is sunny. She asks important questions about the series, "Roots," on TV, and notes missteps by then-mayor Marion Barry. She is blunt in her assessment of Janet Cooke's fraudulent story about an 8-year-old heroin addict, rightfully concerned that it will cause the media to be even more reluctant to hire African Americans. For by this time she had become "a fanatic about improving diversity in media." Thus she was one of nine founders of the Institute for Journalism Education, which sought to increase the training and hiring of black journalists to counter the excuse: "We can't find anyone qualified." Local high schools became partners, as well as many colleges so that people of color could continue to choose media careers and not be faced with being the first or the only one. Gilliam was also an organizer and plunged even further into providing education and publishing opportunities for young black and Hispanic writers. She discovered local high schools hadn't published their own newspapers at in 1997 and partnered with the Post so that some local schools could start them anew. The goal (people of color represented in media in the same proportion of their percentage of the U.S. population) is not yet met, so she carries on.There's more, what it was like to be married to a successful visual artist, raise her much loved children while juggling job responsibilities and her devotion to African American culture and cultural contributions. She also reveals her struggle with food addiction and her relief at recovery; she tells of finding her way back to the AME church and the Gospel, that was so much a part of her childhood when she was "a preacher's kid."The end of the book indicates that she is still active, and involved in issues of justice, access and equality. This is a woman who can see people clearly and still loves to have conversations with people and discover what drives them. No doubt when she goes to heaven she will greet all the souls who got there before her and then go interview Jesus. After all, they both know what it means to want to be advocates for those oppressed.

I love this book series. When embarking on a way of eating that is significantly different from what you are used to, it is such a relief to have quick and easy guides that cover all meals for a whole month's worth of eating. Makes the transition super easy.

Great if you don’t mind purchasing a lot of sugar alcohols and oA few other unusual ingredients. I spent money on them and then found that they did not agree with my digestive system. That is the exception - not the norm.

This is a really nice, handy collection! I absolutely loved the lemon bars and I can't wait to try the cookie dough dip! There are a few recipes that could easily be modified to different flavors, so I feel like there are even more than 30 different desserts in here.

If this had been called called an informational book on the Keto diet or an overview or something to indicate it is all about whatvthevdiet is and how it works, I would rate it higher and, possibly, recommend it. But, I expected a book of recipes and not all the basics on the diet. I already knew that. Disappointed in this book.

All recipes have been so delicious! It is a little difficult to match your breakfast/lunch/dinner to fit the amount of fat you need. My husband and I both do this diet and he needs a lot more fat and protein so we often have to make different meals. Otherwise no complaints at all!

Love love the recipes. It’s very easy and all recipes taste good. I cooked half of the recipes already and all taste great with easy steps to follow. Thanks

This book is well written, especially all the information on Keto and low carb eating in the introduction. The photography is fantastic, so you get to see the final product clearly. The ingredients are basic; I've purchased all of them through Amazon. I love this book!

Excellent recipies. Good variety. Easy ingredients. Don't know which one to use first. Will purchase other books by author. Recommend

Ready to learn not just the "how," but the "why" behind Photoshop's most powerful features? Photoshop guru Ben Willmore believes the only way to master Photoshop is to go beyond simply memorizing steps, and gain an under-the-hood understanding of the program. He does the job masterfully in Adobe Photoshop 7.0 Studio Techniques, a well-known favorite that delivers the essential information you need in a fun, well-written, easy-to-read style. Rather than detail every mind-numbing feature of Photoshop, Willmore's compact book cuts through the fat to focus on the concepts, features, and techniques that will truly make a difference in how you use Photoshop 7 every day. If you've ever wanted to understand complex concepts like curves and channels, or learn the logic behind Photoshop's keyboard commands, look no further. Fully updated to cover the new features of Photoshop 7, Adobe Photoshop 7.0 Studio Techniques starts with the working foundations of Photoshop--the basic tools, palettes, layers, and masks--and quickly moves on to real-world production techniques, such as how to sharpen scans, correct and optimize images, and use color curves to your advantage. By the time you finish the book, you'll have explored the creative aspects of Photoshop, such as how to blend or enhance images, master colorizing techniques, and create advanced type effects. Included is an entirely new chapter on color management that gives you practical instruction on implementing a color-managed workflow from monitor to press. A section on Web graphics rounds out the book, with chapters on image slicing and rollovers, creating effects for interface design, animating effects, and optimizing images for Web. If you want to get beyond conventional step-by-step instruction and become "Photoshop enlightened," this is the book for you.

I come from a strong photographic background and have been using Photoshop since version 4.0 for preparation of web and print material. I only wish I had this book 4 years ago instead of wasting my money and time on a dozen fluffy Photoshop books. If you only buy one Photoshop book, this is the one to get.Willmore has a gift for explaining the most complex subjects in a way that is very easy to understand. He holds your hand through many excercises but doesn't fall into the trap that most writers do by telling you step by step, you will learn Photoshop much more thoroughly with Wilmore's method.Thinking of taking a college Photoshop class? Buy this book, work through all the chapters and you probably will end knowing more than than most teachers, this book is that good.If you want to really learn Photoshop and not just follow steps 1 - 10 like most books do (and end up just knowing how to follow steps) this is the book to get.The section on color management and color correction is worth the price of the book alone!

I highly recommend this book to help you really understand Photoshop. Ben Willmore's Photoshop 7 Studio Techniques is a book required by my latest Photoshop class. With a previous professor I was using Classroom in a Book. What a difference everything makes!First thing, you open the book and it is filled with lovely color pictures. Imagine that? Sounds silly, but maybe, gasp, all computer graphics books should be in color? After all, we don't live in Pleasantville.Second, the book is easy to read. When you read a chapter you don't want to be bogged down reading a page for half an hour. The book informs you well, with a flow that makes you feel as though Ben is right there in a chair next to you.Third, the book doesn't make you follow directions without letting you know the how and why of it all. This book actually teaches you how things work, without the pocket-protector. Anybody with the most basic understanding of their computer should easily learn from this text.Fourth, all computer books should be accompanied by a cd-rom. There is also a web site mentioned in the book that the author runs that is well worth a bookmark.I actually wanted a Classroom in a Book for an Illustrator class, because I was used to the format, and now I only wish that Ben Willmore wrote books for that program as well. All textbooks should be this informative and easy to read. Worth every penny.

I'm a beginner at Photoshop 7 and this was definitely NOT the book to start with. Because one review said that it covered the basics, I thought it would be okay, but I just don't have the experience with the program yet to benefit from what is no doubt an excellent book.

I'm new to Photoshop and this book is not helping me to learn it. The techniques discribed in this book look great but you have to know Photoshop pretty well before you can use them. Probably a good book - but not for beginners.

While the HOT photoshop book only teaches through steps and examples often failing to show how to get there independently, this book omits the steps entirely and is not integrated with the practice cd provided. I found myself often frustrated with the lack of examples and the lack of integration with the practice images provided. Perhaps this book is better geared towards intermediate to advanced users, but it falls short for beginers.

I've been a graphic designer for 5 years and there was stuff in this book that I didn't know! I don't think it's a "Beginner's Book" but if you know the basics and you're a graphic designer for the web OR print then this is the book you've been looking for .

Ernest Hemingway on Writing, by Larry W. Phillips

Amazon.com Review

"Throughout Ernest Hemingway's career as a writer," says Larry W. Phillips in his introduction to Ernest Hemingway on Writing, "he maintained that it was bad luck to talk about writing." Hemingway seems to have courted bad luck. Phillips has amassed a slender book's worth of Hemingway's reflections on writing, culled from letters, books, interviews, speeches, and an unpublished manuscript. These musings are arranged into topics such as "Advice to Writers," "Working Habits," and "Obscenity" (of which there is plenty here). Sometimes ponderous, other times offhand, these thoughts form a portrait of a man driven to create not solely the best writing he could, but the best writing, period. Hemingway craved exactness, both in his work and in the work of others; he strove to make every word necessary. "Eschew the monumental," he wrote to Maxwell Perkins in 1932. "Shun the Epic. All the guys who can paint great big pictures can paint great small ones." His aim? Mere perfection. "I write one page of masterpiece to ninety one pages of shit," he confided to F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1934. "I try to put the shit in the wastebasket." --Jane Steinberg

From Library Journal

Yet another volume reproduced to celebrate old Hemingstein's centennial, this 1984 title offers Hemingway's comments on the writing game gleaned by editor Phillips from the author's numerous fiction and nonfiction works as well as his personal correspondence. It's not "how-to" instructional advice but rather Ernesto's impressions on writing and those who do it. More of a fan's book than a practical guide. Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

#70,042 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This short collection exceprts Hemingway's thoughts on writing and criticism. The editor did an excellent job organizing them along thematic lines.I had read many of these passages in Hem's other works: A Moveable Feast and the letters quoted in Michael Reynold's multi-volume biography of the writer. This collection brings in some highly insightful passages from the writer's journalism and unpublished correspondence. Hemingway's comments on professional critics are highly entertaining and offer catharsis for the would-be or younger writer.Ultimately, I simply wanted more. Ten dollars for a short read--while packed with insight--is a lot for a small book. I highly recommend it for anyone unfamiliar with Hemingway's personal views on the craft of writing.

Having read Stephen King's book, ON WRITING; Robert McKee's thick tome, STORY; and recently deceased William Zinsser's book ON WRITING WELL, among dozens of other books on the subject, I ordered the excellent compilation of Ernest Hemingway's quotes about the craft of writing, organized for the first time together in one volume by Larry Phillips. Hemingway was a man who spoke his mind in a straightforward way. He wasn't mincing words when he wrote (I'm paraphrasing his words), "When you are working well, leave some inspiration for the next day. That way you have some good work waiting for you when you return to it." This book of quotes is thoughtful, practical, and highly recommended.

When I got this book in the mail, I was disappointed at first. I thought I was going to be buying something akin to Stephen King's On Writing, but as soon as I read the introduction from the editor, I learned that Hemingway thought it was bad luck to talk about writing. So of course he would never create a manifesto like King did. I thought, "Great, these are going to be the same quotes you can find online." Nope. I was wrong. This is essentially a collection of his thoughts on writing gathered from interviews and letters. The editors obviously took a long, painstaking process of putting everything together, and it has quickly become something I am going to treasure. My reaction to John Gardner's On Writing was traumatizing fear that I wasn't good enough. Stephen King's On Writing is great, except it gave me an unrealistic expectation that if I can't write an award-winning novel like Carrie, then I may as well not try at all. However, this book just inspires me. Plain and simple. I also love the fact that since it's broken up into little quotes, I don't have to waste a lot of time reading it, and get back to actually writing.

This book is a worthwhile purchase if you are a writer or a Hemingway fan. Be forewarned that the book is just a compilation of quotes from Hemingway’s works, letters, and interviews. Even if you are not a Hemingway scholar, you already have read between 50 and 90% of the material in this book. It is the juxtaposition of quotes you have already read, in ways that make you understand the quotes differently than before, that is the value of this book. When you read this book you will have a couple of moments where you say, “Oh wow, I didn’t think of that before.” The author went to a lot of time and trouble to read all of Hemingway’s writing and interviews, compile the quotes, and arrange them, and unless you are the kind who would enjoy doing all of that yourself from scratch, you are better off just buying this book.

I really enjoyed reading these thoughts on the writing process by the great man as I am a big fan and a writer myself. I finished it, need to digest it, and then re-read it, as some of his statements are quite difficult to fathom and require further analysis. His individuality as a writer, his strong masculinity, sense of humour and intensely romantic nature shine through. There's his raw edge in evidence too: the suffering the writer goes through to be true to his art, and his essential loneliness. He uses those words a lot: "truly" and "true". He was determined to be honest with himself as a writer, not conform to any commercial or ideological formula, and that's clearly an outstanding quality of the man. I loved his irascibility, his forthrightness and his honesty, along with his compassion and humanity.Hemingway and Steinbeck are two of my favourite writers. They are exceptional.I'd recommend this book to any aspiring writer who just wants to enjoy what one outstanding man had to say about the craft and learn a lot, while gaining a valuable insight into one of the 20th century's greatest authors.

Great insight to writing and its behind the scene of writers views of their craft. Would recommend to anyone interested in the writing life. One may not like what Hemingway wrote about or his machismo life style, but he was a great writer who commented on the writing world of his time. Interesting.

I very much enjoy Hemingway, and his general tone and wit. However, this book leaves something to be desired. Insightful? Sure, but it simply lacks depth or clarification. Granted, this is a book pieced together throughout Hemingway's career, (which I didn't realize was the case, but a wonderful bit of information on Hemingway himself), and is in no way a comprehensive view of his philosophy as a writer, but more of a glimpse. I would have given this four stars, however, the book was irregular in its production. Page 113, the beginning of Chapter 13, has an extra inch of margin that extends beyond the bottom portion of the book. The part that is a little irritating is the fact that the page was carefully folded into the book, so you didn't know until you opened up the book and found the discrepancy, which is a result of bad quality control.

Who can go wrong with Hemingway on writing? I've given so many copies of this book to students and friends alike---they all love it. The advice from Hemingway shows his genius and use of the English language----he captures his thoughts so precisely! The words reveal the man---as a writer and human being with a rich philosophy of life.
