Robert E. Lee's book on the life and times of Blackbeard the Pirate is well researched and thoroughly footnoted. I highly recommend this work to anyone interested in a scholarly treatment of this period of Colonial North Carolina history during the Golden Age of Piracy. Unfortunately, the depth of Mr. Lee's treatment of the subject matter does not carry over to readability and what we have is essentially a work written by a very capable historical researcher for historical researchers. At times, Mr. Lee's book reads like a Doctoral Thesis where readability is compromised in the interest of historical detail so in some areas getting through the book can become rather tedious particularly in the detailed discussions of the political motivations of the various Colonial Governors and their supporters. The depth of these discussions is wonderful for developing a good understanding of the political motivations of the times but unfortunately the reader can easily become lost in the historical detail and most of it is only tangentially related to Blackbeard. Mr. Lee's book is not really intended for the casual reader nor is it intended for entertainment. It is a serious work that provides a wonderful window into the historical Blackbeard and the world in which he lived. I strongly recommend this work to anyone interested in developing a deeper understanding of just who was the historical figure Blackbeard and the external events that were shaping his times but any potential reader needs to be forewarned, the work is not really intended for the casual reader.

This was not what I expected, but it was a good read anyway. The book covered a lot of his life but seemed more intent on telling the storey of life after his death. If your into pirate history it’s not a bad read.

This book changed the way I looked at pirates. Dr. Lee brings the era to life in a very informative way that takes the reader back in time, and adds a cultural background to the age of piracy.

His final years in and around North Carolina and Virginia bring a certain romantic twist to the colonial history of New England.Robert E. Lee's purpose in writing this book was to quell the exaggerated lore behind the captain. He does so gallantly, without making references to incorrect legends (which could serve to confuse the reader). His research and references are excellent and explained in the preface.Lee commences from the beginning, and the introduction to Blackbeard suggests it was sea faring fate for the boy. Lee admits information on the young Edward Teach is in short supply, but his reasoning behind the liminal inspirations make sense: Bristol, Teach's hometown, was a maritime village. Popular 17th century publications blazoned a world of extravagant adventure, filling landlubbers' heads with images of buccaneers brandishing firearms and blades; these were not unlike the effects of modern naval histories upon today's readers.The exciting piratical escapades are not delayed for long. Within the first chapter, Lee will already dive into a 1717 attack by Blackbeard and his mentor, Hornigold. The plunder was enormous, and to this day it has yet to be recovered. These are the tales we all love to hear and read about that evoke a trembling thrill deep within us. There's still treasure to be had!As Blackbeard matures and grows in the deviant (but sometimes necessary) career, Lee finds less and less records to recount. His explanation: Teach came from a well-to-do family and would not keep records of his travels/attacks/plunders lest his ancestry is traced and his family's name tarnished. One of the most exciting chapters is, naturally, the conquest for Blackbeard's body.The reader must take care to note the subtitle of the book: A Reappraisal of His Life and Times. In truth, Blackbeard does not fill the pages of this book; rather, the 250 pages depend on a textbook-like account of Virginia's and the Carolina's histories that were briefly defiled or abetted by Blackbeard's presence. There is a lot of politics to sift through and, while it reads like a legal thriller at times, the reader should not be fooled by the book's self-description as an "exciting swashbuckler." That said, the way Blackbeard's crew (especially his quartermaster) is brought to justice, or pardoned, is as twisted as any fiction.Pirates are a brotherhood that seem curiously strange and most intriguing to pretty much anyone alive. Why did they do what they did? Why did Blackbeard become Blackbeard? In his preface, Robert E. Lee doesn't try to explicate these outlaws. Rather, he asks the reader to not "judge the historical figures of a past age by the moral standards of the present." Instead, the reader will see just how these men were judged when in their own element.One very cool thing is the inclusion of a lengthy poem, "The Downfall of Piracy" (excerpted above, from Appendix A), believed to have been written by a 12 year old Benjamin Franklin.

Over the years Edward Teach, more commonly known as Blackbeard, has become more legend than man. A process that I think would have pleased Teach very much for he was as much a showman as a pirate. That is a part of his character that is richly brought out in this book. Unfortunately, there is really little for Mr. Lee to work with since real hard evidence of Teach's activities is scarce. Pirates after all were criminals and weren't exactly known for keeping records of their thefts.Lee I suppose did the best he could with the evidence he had to work with but this already short book would have been much better if it had been even shorter. The parts of the book that deal with Teach are excellent but there is far too much dead weight in this book. For example, some of the politics of Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina have to be dealt with to understand why the Governor of Virginia invaded North Carolina to capture or kill Blackbeard. The author however, included much more of the era's politics than was necessary. This led to parts of the book being almost mind numbingly dull and the parts of the book dealing with the genealogy of some of the colonial first families were as tedious to read as almost anything I have seen. Being a lawyer, the author has also sprinkled his text with Latin legal terms with no explanation of their meaning. If I were to ever learn Latin that would not bother me I suppose but as I speak no Latin this practice annoys me no end.Overall, the reader will get a fairly good feeling for Blackbeard and his times. Be warned however, parts of this book will bore you to tears. Instead of the politics and genealogy, a good chapter on the treasure hunters who have sought Blackbeard's probably non-existent buried loot would have been nice.

Then next time, when you are using those techniques, methods- you will know what to expect and control to make great tasting food better.This edition doesn't include the Culinary-E Online program from Wiley. That's why the cost is affordable. But I don't think you need it because the recipes and techniques are important when working as a culinary professional. Don't be afraid to taste as soon as your product has achieved good taste, and balances all of the components you mixed, cooked,etcetera.

The book content is awesome, very well written and explanations are very good. Some sections need to be read several times because there is so much information in each phrase that you are probably missing additional useful content. Still easy to read though.A few things to take into consideration before purchasing: This book is pretty big and heavy physically, so I went for the Kindle version. while it is a book printout and you can't get the nice features of a real Kindle book. It's still alright if you can live with it, which is my case.The 4/5 stars is because the physical version comes with a code to download a menu-making software that the electronic version doesn't have (as it comes as a separate piece of paper). You can only get it with the physical version or purchase the code separately for 40$. Not a good deal in my opinion.

I am in culinary school and this is the required text for our classes. After hours of researching online, and even taking the time to call the publisher, I finally decided to take a risk by buying this "Trade" version rather than the "College Version," offered here on Amazon and in our school's bookstore. Rest assured! This book is EXACTLY the same as the "College Version," but it doesn't include the CulinarE Companion CD (which our school does not utilize anyway)! I even had the instructors at school ask the publisher about the differences, and they admitted that there are none! All of the recipes and page numbers match up identically. Save yourself the $36+ dollars and buy this version instead of getting ripped off by a marketing scam to get more money out of students by calling a book the "College Version" - I'm glad I did!We are just getting into the book, so I can't offer too much of an opinion, but from what I've seen so far, I'm impressed! I just wanted to add my review so that hopefully another student like myself can save some money. I hope it helps!

Good textbook for culinary students. There is a lot of info between the hard covers. Not all the recipes are fabulous, but are a teaching moment.Have used this for all my culinary lab classes.It is important to check with the instructor as with this edition there was a quantity change for several recipes.The prior edition made a larger quantity of some recipes. Several classmates opted for the lower cost and purchase of the earlier edition ending up with difficulty in completing the assignments when having to scale the recipe because the older version made double and the instructor asked for the quantity provided with the current edition of the book as the required text.

From Escoffier to present day cooking trends, it’s all here along with over a 1,000 recipes. Background information, preparation techniques plus sanitation and proper food handling. It’s used as a culinary arts textbook but there’s plenty for the home cook too.

Easy to follow even a home cook can make these receipes. We use this book religiously in class. Its a wealth of information, offers variations to recipes and classic ways of doing it.

I discovered cooking through a Great Courses program from The Teaching Company and wanted to further my education (you should get that course). This book is HUGE! It covers everything. However, if you don't already know a little about cooking, its format can lose you. Here's how I am using it: I find a recipe for a complete dinner I like and then I find the references to the techniques required in this book. After some study and note taking, I am ready to cook. The book is really formatted for having a cooking teacher. I can't use it that way. For example, the chapter cutting and chopping food is great, but you will never do all that cutting and chopping for any meal. So, if you need to cut up carrots for a meal, go to that section and learn what to do - skip the rest. Also, I found the website software a waste. Maybe I just don't know how to use it properly, but for me it's worthless. Final analysis, if you want a complete text to improve your cooking, buy this book and you will always have a resource that tells you what to do. The next time a recipe uses some strange word, turn to the index, find the page, study, and cook. The results? Delicious!

A book that surprised me. Its big...but its a lot of helpfull information. Ok is totally devoted do US kitchens, but some techniques you can use anywere, and also you can change ingredients (in Brazil there are not so many stuff).I would recomend it. The only negative part is that the card that comes with it does not give access to the site, and its impossible to check the videos and tutorials in the net if you are not registered on a University that is listed there.

If you're a Maddow viewer... well... her writing is exactly the same style as her show segments.Make a point and then rephrase it at least two more times for emphasis. And very often it is attention grabbing, effective communication... but sometimes "get-on-with-it" irritating.In writing it just slows you down by making it impossible to disconnect the internal vocalization... her voice inside your head. It's the strongest connection since I read Shelby Foote's excellent Civil War trilogy after seeing his segments in the Ken Burns' documentary. But where I finally surrendered to Shelby's s l o w... s o u t h e r n... d r a w l.... for over a thousand pages... I found myself fighting Rachel's narration in my head.Content? Well it's strong and far from the full blown anti-war/pease-nik rhetoric you might expect from a "lefty icon". More the case against stupid wars/fights that we are thrust into "by people with no skin in the game who extol the virtues of our fighting forces while abusing the #@&% out of them" than "peace at any cost".Read and donated to my local library...

She has a great gift of being able to explain a situation in such a way that you want to keep reading...compelling..

I got this book because I've become a huge fan of THE RACHEL MADDOW SHOW on MSNBC. I knew it was published about a decade ago, but still thought I might find it interesting. I was right.Rachel's writing is excellent, and the book was utterly fascinating. Although I lived through the time periods covered, and have always been a news junkie, I learned a LOT from this book. I also learned much about our military's well-hidden history of nuclear mishaps and dirty bomb detonations.

This book is basically about the old Eisenhower warning: Beware the "Military-Industrial-Complex", and how a gradual modification of constitutional safe guards fed and cared for the monster, so that it grew. Whether intentionally (War is profitable for the provider - as G. B. Shaw inferred over a century ago), or just by taking the easiest path, we have drifted into the present situation where American wars have become a consistent part of our culture - hence the title: Drift.War is not a happy topic; it makes us sad and mad (as well as angry). So I hesitated to read this book. Having lived through WW2, then Korea, Viet Nam, Grenada, Gulf, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Afghanistan again, I thought to have had sufficient exposure to war history via the news. However, as a fan of Rachel Maddow's news program, I decided to give it a try. It was so worth it. I was astounded at the amount of research and detail she supplied. I learned much more about all the things I thought I knew, and was able to see much better how we got to our present situation. It was not an all happy read - the part about our aging and still massive nuclear "deterrent" is positively frightening - , and it did make me angry! But even in the most frustrating parts, Rachel's characteristic wry humor (trademark of her popular news show) shone though and made it a tolerable and even enjoyable read.Maddow takes us though this progressively growing government- military mess - supported by a chapter-by-chapter set of references (listed at the end). However, she does not just leave it there, as I had feared she would. Instead she actually creates a list of how to begin to fix things and eventually reverse the process. The steps are very reasonable and most likely would work if given a chance - this still is a democracy, so things still can be changed once we understand the situation. I certainly would recommend this book to anyone. It accomplished well the tricky task of bringing us a sour situation with enough sweetening to "make the medicine go down".

A well documented, well written, evaluation of the rise of Presidential Power in the U.S.A.; and Congress' failure to do its job. What is new? What is new since the Reagan Administration (back to H. Truman and the Korean Police Action?) is that the Executive Branch of our Government determines when the U.S. will use military force, the amount used, and how it is used. The Constitutional Requirement (where were the Republicans? Oh. Reagan started this trend...that's right.) that only the Congress has the Power to Declare War has been ignored. Combined with changes in the make up of our armed forces (some good, some bad) this has led us to now. Pulled out of Iraq years after we invaded on the same pretext used by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor; still in Afghanistan our longest military action; and dropping guided missiles somewhere today this book explains, lucidly, how the U.S.A. has moved from a citizen army to a country always at war. Recommend you read this. You may also find the author's news program interesting.

My 12-year-old daughter loves these! Buying them with her own money has motivated her to do extra work around the house!

I bought this for my son so he would read something with female main characters. I would read this even if I didn't have kids. Love everything out the book. The characters. The art. It's all great. Get them all.

My youngest had a bit of a hard time finding books she liked to read. The husband took her to the game shop one day and she picked out the first in this series and her reading took off. I've been ordering her all of them as soon as they come out, she just gobbles them up.

I couldn’t wait to dive into this one after reading the other two. What I was immediately put off by was the new art style. I wasn’t thrilled about it because I loved the past artwork, but I pushed forward and I'm happy I did! It ended up being pretty awesome. Looking back I guess I just wasn’t sure what to think about it and was holding onto the first two. So friends, keep an open mind... I REALLY loved this one. I felt like the story was more thought out and allowed me to get more invested.I also got to know more about each of the girl and their personalities which allowed me to connect with them all individually. I LOVED how aggressive and goal orientated April was. It reminded me of myself haha But the part about decorating cakes killed me especially because of Ripley. It was adventurous and humorous and I hope this series continues in this direction!!

I love this series! The art style is amazing! The author is awesome! I love comic books and this series is definitely one of my favorites!

My son and I rip through Lumberjanes. All I can say is: glad they exist. LOVE THEM

Not just farms but mob farms too.

If you like Minecraft, want to learn more tricks and skills with the game, and don't want to watch annoying videos on YouTube, buy this book. Very well written, clear pictures, and easy enough for kids to understand (yet some of the skills are pretty advanced).

My kid is reading something!!

Good way to learn about farming in mine craft and I'm a fan of playing Minecraft. But I wanted to learn anything I can so that I can build a cool world in the game!
