Review

Praise for She Is Not Invisible:“Laureth is sixteen, smart, self-doubting, and blind. She is also desperate to find her missing famous author father . . . Readers will applaud Laureth's believable evolution into a more confident - and definitely more visible - young woman.” ―The Horn Book“This novel will have readers feeling a creepy sensation on the backs of their necks long after the last page.” ―School Library Journal“Sedgwick takes the somewhat shopworn theme of siblings on a parent hunt to a fascinating new level.” ―Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books“In a race against time, Laurel and Ben must investigate what happened to her father using the meager clues they have available . . . Recommend this book to mystery lovers and especially to those who enjoyed Girl, Stolen.” ―VOYA“A thriller that challenges readers' understanding of the universe . . . It's no coincidence that Sedgwick has crafted yet another gripping tale of wonder.” ―Kirkus Reviews, starred review“This fast-paced thriller delivers a compelling mystery, thought-provoking questions about existence, and brilliantly lifelike characters.” ―Booklist, starred review“Printz-winner Sedgwick (Midwinterblood) again demonstrates his remarkable versatility, trading the generations-spanning horrors of his recent books for an equally tense contemporary story about coincidence, obsession, and the ways in which we see the world.” ―Publishers Weekly, starred review“What this book proves, is that Marcus is not only one of the greatest British YA writers, but one of the most versatile too. Unlike anything he has written before and a book that will reach a whole new audience. Bloomin' loved it.” ―Phil Earle, author of Heroic, Being Billy and Saving Daisy“Marcus Sedgwick doesn't speak down to his teen readers. He tells it how it is, without footnotes or gloss, and it's up to the reader to decide how much they want to take from his books. A rollicking good adventure? No problem - that's there and easily available. Just let your eyes slide across the bits in italics and jump to the next event. It would be a shame to do that, though, because for those prepared to deal with it, there's much, much more in this book: theories and philosophies and ideas which stretch the reader and give the adventure far greater depth and resonance.” ―The Bookbag“Sedgwick's prose is as crisp and clear as always, without losing a single fathom of emotional depth, and Laureth and Benjamin will resonate soundly with anyone who has ever negotiated the ups and downs of sibling relationships.” ―Rebecca Davies, The Independent: Children's Book Blog“Marcus Sedgwick has written a story which really makes you think. He has referred to it as an iceberg and certainly the story can be read on two levels; on the surface a simple story of a girl, Laureth, accompanied by her young brother, Ben and his beloved soft toy, Stan, determined to find their missing father, in spite of Laureth's personal circumstances making this no easy task and, below the surface, a much more complicated story, concerning the nature of obsession and coincidence; all of which leaves you pondering and re-reading. . . . Totally absorbing.” ―Gill Perry, Waterstones.com

About the Author

Everyone's had a great coincidence happen to them, and Marcus Sedgwick, author of Midwinterblood, White Crow, and the Printz Honor–winning Revolver, is no exception. Some very weird things have happened to the author over the years, a few of which have found their way into this book, along with an obsession with the number 354, which has "haunted" him all his life. As a way to finally free himself from this obsession, the number 354 is to be found lurking "between the lines" of the story, in various ways.

Laureth (yes, there is a story behind her unusual name) is the daughter of a writer who has made his fame and fortune through writing comedic novels. There's a shift in Laureth's father though, and he begins to grow more serious and introverted, consumed with writing this book regarding coincidences found within life, investigating whether or not they are, in fact, mere coincidences or does the truth go deeper? While he focuses on research, Laureth runs her father's website, answering emails from fans in his name. Shortly after Laureth's father goes away on a research trip -- she believes he was supposed to go to some place like Switzerland or Austria -- she gets an email from someone in America saying they have her father's fieldwork journal. How did this uber-important journal land in America?! Laureth decides to set out on a journey to retrieve the journal and find out what happened to her father, but because she is blind she must take along her younger brother to help her through the numerous challenges of airports, public transportation and various customer service areas. As Laureth and her brother slowly start to unravel the mystery, she also gives the reader an eye-opening glimpse into how people with disabilities are commonly treated, hence the title She Is Not Invisible. This book took a few chapters for me to really get into, as I tried to feel out where it might be heading, but ultimately I found myself completely fascinated and entranced with this novel. So much so that I found myself surprised that this is marketed to a YA audience! I say this only because some of the material, I thought, got pretty meta... particularly when the reader is given the excerpts from the journal of Laureth's father, where he jots down his thoughts and ideas after researching the lives of well-known writers & scientists such as Einstein, Jung, Freud, Pauli and Koestler and how their personal lives were affected by their findings on the topic of assumed coincidences. At times it even reminded me a bit of the Jim Carrey film The Number 23.Also addressed within the story, which I quite liked, was the topic of disabilities and how they are commonly perceived by people who don't have them, the discriminations that can follow those disabilities. Laureth discusses how, because she is blind, people often confoundedly treat her as if she was mentally ill or, as the title suggests, invisible. The sad go-to of so many -- it scares or confuses us so we'll just pretend it doesn't exist until it goes away. Broke my heart, the treatment she often gets in this story.I loved the combination of an entertaining mystery AND adventure story blended with some poignant, thought-provoking social commentary. I eagerly anticipate getting into more of Sedgwick's books in the future!**TRIGGER WARNING FOR READERS: This book does briefly discuss suicide in parts of the journal entries.

This is a fine story of and for those with disabilities and those who live with them. It's hard to imagine the strength this young person shows in the face of difficulties.

My daughter loved the book, she is reading all the other books in the series

I only read this book for a school project and expected it to be insanely boring like the rest of them but soon enough I found myself unable to put it down. Really amazing and meaningful story!

Item was as stated thank you

I bought this book for my teenage daughter and she loved it.

"One final time I told myself I wasn’t abducting my little brother."Thus begins Marcus Sedgwick’s triumphant young adult novel ‘She Is Not Invisible’ about sixteen-year-old Laureth Peak who ‘abducts’ her seven-year-old brother, Benjamin, and goes on a thrilling adventure from Manchester, UK to New York in search of their missing father.Jack Peak was a famous novelist – back when he wrote ‘funny’ books – but for the last few years (most of Benjamin’s life in fact) Jack Peak has been working on a new book all about coincidence. It’s taken up most of his time, maybe even his sanity and possibly his marriage– as he researches Edgar Allen Poe, Carl Jung, Albert Einstein the haunting of number-354 and The Hound of Heaven. Most recently he’s been on a research trip to Switzerland … but when Laureth hasn’t heard from her father in almost a week, she grows concerned. Even more so when she receives a mysterious email from someone in New York claiming to have found her father’s precious notebook. Her mother seems unconcerned with Jack’s whereabouts, but Laureth has a funny feeling. She’s determined to go to New York and find her father, but she needs Benjamin to do it. Because Laureth is blind.I’m in absolute awe of both Marcus Sedgwick and Laureth. Here is a heart-palpitating mystery thriller about two children following the trail of their father’s mad scribblings through the world’s busiest city – and the entire story is narrated by Laureth. It’s no mean feat to communicate the sounds and smells, the feel of New York minus the sense of sight, but Sedgwick does it marvellously. The story is told in real-time as Laureth and Ben go hunting for their missing father, and while piecing together his puzzle, Laureth reflects on the events leading up to her father’s disappearance and the long obsession he’s had with his book on coincidence. Interspersed throughout the book are pages from Jack Peak’s ‘black book’ – containing ideas about his next book, mad ramblings about the number 354 and a seeming paranoia about The Hound Of Heaven.Without a doubt, it’s refreshing to read a young adult book with a blind protagonist, but especially Sedgwick’s book because Laureth’s lack of sight is never communicated as a ‘disability’. It’s just who she is and she wouldn’t change it even if she could, but she is frustrated at having to adapt to other people who treat her differently (from begrudging pity to empty sympathy). Laureth is in no way held back by her blindness. In fact, it gives her a far more open perspective of people.‘She Is Not Invisible’ is also a writing triumph for Marcus Sedgwick. I don’t want to give the surprise away – but coincidences run deeper in this book than just the plot, and when it’s revealed just how much tricky thought Sedgwick put into the writing, your jaw will drop‘She Is Not Invisible’ is a wonderful novel, and definitely going on my favourite’s list. Laureth is one of the finest young sleuths and this mystery thriller is so finely crafted so as to send tingles down your spine well after the last page …

Marcus Sedgwick has another winner. Young Adult that pushes the boundaries, She is Not Invisible is definitely a read that all ages would find engaging. Laureth is an amazing character. Precocious beyond her years and amazing by any standards…all that she accomplishes is mind boggling. The kid brother with the unique “super power” who is loyal and supportive to a fault. I loved the setting and the characterizations. The way the main character rationalized, justified and then simply went with whatever came. I loved them both. The plot was a bit thin, but I mostly didn’t mind. It was merely the vehicle used to take Laureth and Benjamin on this amazing ride. I loved all of the little peaks in the father’s notebook and the speculation about coincidences. Quite different in tone and content than my previous Sedgwick read, Midwinterblood, this book nevertheless confirmed for me that Sedgwick deserves a place on my “Authors to Read” shelf. This book is the ultimate YA road trip…but mixed with some mystery, a little thriller, and great philosophical debates…it crosses the divide easily into literary fiction.Note: Review copy rcvd from Publisher, but all thoughts and opinions are my own.

The author suggest that not only are “biases hardwired into us”, but also they are incredibly difficult to evade. We think that we are misled because we are bombarded with misinformation, but this is only part of the story. The way we think, and all our biases, such as “herding bias”, “present bias” are just a few examples of unconscious biases highlighted. The author also points to “available heuristic” and “filter bubbles” that contribute to our misperceptions of reality. Although misperceptions are present throughout history, this book takes it a step further through the impressive scale of the research and drawing on several interesting studies. The author does not leave us in a ‘victim’ state, but provides us with a handy set of points to help us form a more accurate view of the world. I could not put the book down. Highly recommended.

With a great number of data metrics and statistics the author tells a story in his own personal tone: we have bias, we are stubborn, the world is better than before but a long way to fix things, and give the reader some tools to deal with and to dialogue with others. I like that it has a solid argumentation that the bias issue is not new and we are not dealing with a crisis on post truth reality: always we have been there. Balanced because it address up front what’s wrong and the impact of new technologies on making some issues more difficult to solve.

Too much verbal filler. It's the kind of stuff you'd see in a supermarket tabloid. I give it three stars (I'm feeling generous) because I can see why some folk might find it entertaining. If you want actually useful information see "Factfulness: by Hans Rosling. It's an order of magnitude better

Helene Aylon's art is never easy. She makes you look at the world, rethink your perceptions and values and challenges you to change. So it is exciting to be invited into her life through this autobiography, to understand the genesis of her work and its development. She grew up in a Modern Orthodox home in Borough Park, NY where she attended the Shulamith School for Girls, shared her bedroom with her Yiddish speaking grandmother, and was very close to her mother. She was possessed of a bright and courageous mind that questioned everything around her, but her life was limited by her environment. She had a growing awareness of the absence of women in Jewish texts and worship and bristled at the void. She struggled with the limitations of women's lives, hopes and expectations. At 18 she married a rabbi, and at 30 she was a widow. Her second life began with her enrollment at Brooklyn College to study art, where she was mentored by the Abstract Expressionist, Ad Reinhardt. As a symbol of her new life she changed her name from Greenfield to Aylon, the Hebrew equivalent of Helene. She became Helene Helene, creator of herself. Her art became an exploration of the voids that she was always trying to understand and reshape. In the 1970s it was the body; in the 80s it was the earth and the environment; in the 90s it was God. A major part of that work is The Liberation of God. Installations of her art have been shown in major museums across America. Each one makes the viewer stop and ask the same questions that she asked as she grew up. Each one forces you to find your own understanding and response. The book deepens your experience of her art, how it was conceived and evolved, and how the artist herself understands it.It is encouraging to all women who are labeled "elderly" by the press and government to know that a woman in her 80s is still creating new works of art; still struggling with questions that she first confronted as a child; still seeking answers to share with her audience; still asking us to participate in change.

Helène Aylon's autobiography records the fascinating story of her personal and professional transformation from the daughter of Orthodox Jewish parents to an independent and formidable feminist artist. Her account begins with her upbringing, which was entrenched in Jewish tradition. For the uninitiated, Aylon parenthetically translates Yiddish and Hebrew expressions used in her household and explains the cultural significance of holy days and rituals observed by her family. While the overarching structure is chronological, Aylon easily and compellingly interjects related experiences that, in some instances, occurred at different times in her life. In this respect, her book has an organic conversational quality that further enhances her engrossing story. While the book recounts Aylon's gradual emancipation from the strictures of her Orthodox background, her personal journey did not lead to the outright rejection of her Jewish heritage. Instead, her cultural experiences informed her art in varied, nuanced, and sometimes unexpected ways. The book is punctuated by photographs of Aylon's work in double-page spreads. Instead of interrupting the text, they revisit and expand many of the themes that run through the surrounding narrative. In this remarkable autobiography, the author's mother is a persistently important presence, even when Aylon's art challenged established notions about women, the environment, and the Torah. Although tensions sometimes arose as Aylon's progressive mindset contravened her mother's traditional worldview, the two remained close. In fact, the book begins and ends with Aylon's mother. Ultimately, this is more than an autobiography. It is a testament to the author's mother and, more broadly, to her foremothers, without whom she could not have arrived in this time and place. In her pioneering feminism, bold challenges to tradition, and inspired memoir, Helène Aylon has honored those foremothers. She has also given us something extraordinary.

This is a great book for any woman who has struggled with the ancient laws of orthodox Judaism. It the autobiography of one woman who stayed true to her beliefs and rose above the savage treatment of women.

I know Ms. Aylon personally and was not surprised by her antipathy towards the circumstances in which she was raised.I disagree with many of her conclusions though I understand the issues which drove her away from the religious family in which she grew up. Some of her "facts" are factually incorrect as I know the area where she grew up. She has jumbled some of the names and places of her youth. The writing is clever, witty and, at times, tragic. I can understand if some family members were hurt by her writing.Something to read if there's nothing good on TV.

The paper quality is a bummer HOWEVER I use prisma color pencils and they work just fine if I cut the page out with an x-acto knife and put a piece of cardstock beneath. I still get a rich color, and it's not like the paper is ripping on me, and sometimes I press down and use markers. On one of the pages, I did the whole background with a black sharpie. I just feel like if it was horribly thin, it wouldn't have taken that ink so well. Also, I don't really understand the "pornographic" comments. I've seen women in graphic novels like Selene, Wonder Woman, and Emma Frost that look like they have less articles of clothing on than these ladies.None of these ladies in these books are nude or engaging in any kind of behavior associated with anything inappropriate.Yes, they are in skimpy outfits but MOST, IF NOT ALL of them are beautiful and tasteful. I don't know, maybe it's just me but skimpy outfits aren't the same thing as "pornographic."Adult, yes, but not that.

I love the images that are included in this book. I’ve included a video showing a flip through of the coloring book as well as a few pages I’ve already started working on.Pros:- This book includes a good amount of pages to complete with varying levels of detail depending on your mood.- The pages are single-sided so you can use markers and other wet mediums without worrying about ruining another image due to bleed through.- Good for a variety of mediums. I’ve used colored pencils, gel pens, and alcohol based markers.Cons:- I wish the paper was thicker- I wish the pages were perforated and easy to tear out

I love this series, would be 5 stars if the paper wasn't so thin... But if you use a piece of construction paper under the page, that takes care of it.

Compared to volume 1, volume 2 feels like it was lazily put together. I'm just talking about the details and backgrounds of the pictures. Other than that, I love it!

Love these Grimm books. Only I don’t always recognize whic fairy tale is being shown

I love these booksMy 3rd Grimm book and IM OBSESSEDI wish there were more. I love the illustrations soo much

Beautiful pictures, good thick paper, images only on one side so you don't potentially ruin another image! GREAT! SEXY!

Beautiful pics, just wish they were on thicker paper and one sided.

I was actually disappointed in this book after a few years of people recommending it. I had hoped to add it to my collection of grief books for children and have it blow me away because I kept hearing such great things about it. Some things are great about it, but if I had flipped through it in a store, I don't think I would have bought it.It's incredibly important to me that children's feelings are acknowledged, allowed, and assured that their feelings are normal, healthy to express, and that we value their rights to feel them. It's also important to me that children know they have an adult in their life that they can go to for help, to feel safe, that can handle their big emotions, and just to be there for them if they need them. The first pages of this book immediately belittle, ignore, and tell the kids it's not OK to feel scared during a thunderstorm (it's just a thunderstorm, it's nothing to be scared of - um, I'm mid 30's and thunder still scares me!) and that they shouldn't go to their mom when they're scared, instead relying on this invisible string connection.I would have loved to see the mom acknowledge their feelings as acceptable and introduced the invisible string as a way to help them when they truly can't get to her as a reminder that they're connected always, even when they can't be together. Instead, it came across as not wanting them to come to her for something as silly as fear of thunder. It was just disappointing and made me feel sad for the kids. If you want that invisible connection when you aren't there, you gotta work on the actual connection first! In case anyone is curious, there is a mention of an uncle that died and is in heaven, so keep that in mind. I was surprised by that only because people consistently told me the book isn't about grief/connection to the dead. I actually took so long to buy it because it wasn't a book for grief around a death and those are the types of books I need. But I did I buy this book to help a 7 year old with the murder of her previous kindergarten teacher. I loved the idea of this to help her deal with this horrific death and help her sweet little heart heal a little, but I would hate for her to get the idea that fears or other feelings shouldn't be expressed or that she shouldn't seek out help from trusted adults so I haven't let her borrow it yet. Darn those pesky few beginning pages!!!! If those weren't in it, I would like this book a lot more. The sentiment is absolutely beautiful, but the delivery was unfortunately not so great.

After the loss of a family pet, this book was recommended by a friend as a way to help start the conversation with our children about the loss. This is not a grief-oriented book, but rather a story about love and connections with those we love, near and far.It is a very touching and loving story and helped our young kids with accepting and understanding how loved ones are connected. There is only a brief allusion to death (one page), which was perfect for our situation.Other than a brief reference to "heaven" on one page, there are no religious undertones or mentions. This is a heartwarming tale, appropriate for all ages and is a wonderful way to remember how our lives are intertwined.

The Invisible String is a picture book which addresses feelings of loneliness and, very subtly, feelings of loss. I teach first grade and I have small children at home. I read this book at the beginning of every school year to remind children it is OK to miss their family. I also send it to friends and family when they experience loss. Whether losing a pet, losing a grandparent, or experiencing divorce, we can all use a gentle reminder that we are always connected to those we love (and those whom they love!) wherever we are.

Love this story. It's applicable to children with fears, but it's so much more. My granddaughter's mommy died, and this story helped her feel that even though we can't see mommy right now, they are still attached to each other with an invisible string that reaches all the way up to heaven. In fact, the book says that everyone has an invisible string attached to everyone they love, and gives examples of parents, friends, relatives, dead or alive, so that they never have to feel alone. Beautiful story. I would give it more than 5 stars if I could.

I am so thankful Patrice took the time to write and share this book with the world. I work as a child life specialist in a busy Level 1 Trauma Center, and often share this story with children who are facing a separation from their family members for one horrible reason or another. I've shared it with children and their families prior to or following a death so they can remember a way to feel connected. I've shared it with siblings when their brother/sister is admitted to the hospital and they're sad to be apart. I've shared it with a big sibling when their "baby" is admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. I've shared it with my own small children (9, 5, and 2 years old) when they're going to be apart from me for 10+ hours when I go to work. Thank you for helping so many to feel connected to those they love!

This book was introduced to me by a therapist while attempting to help me deal with the experience of allowing my dog to rest, following a bad illness. This dog was my life and it hurt like nothing ever before, still hurts 3 years later, she was all I have/had.The therapist mentioned it was a children’s book but wanted me to read immediately during our 1st session. There were many pauses while reading as the words made SO much sense and there were tears.I can’t stress enough the need for all to read this if/when dealing with separation of any kind. To this day I talk about this book, bought it moments ago for a friends daughter as they just lost their grandmother, hoping it can ease her sense of missing such an icon in her life. While buying for her I thought why not get the ebook for myself to have ALWAYS, did that also.
