"The 50th Law" by 50 Cent & Robert Greene is a unexpected hidden gem that is worth its weight in diamonds (as are the rest of Greene's books).The main idea of the book, "The 50th Law", is fearlessness. The authors details and conveys how to achieve this through ten chapters each centered around a principle or "law" if you will. 50 Cents life is used as the main template/reference for each principle (and the overarching fearlessness law). However Greene also makes use of other stories throughout history for this purpose as well.Overall I feel the book delivered on its purpose. It's able to convey it's lessons well through both story and reasoning. Also it's alot shorter and less textbooky than Greenes other books so that's a plus.Personally the book was inspiring. I of course had been a casual fan of 50 Cents music but I had no idea that behind the scenes was a man who overcame so much and intelligently clawed his way to the top.As for Greene this was my first book I read by him (well actually I'm reading it and The 48 Laws of Power at the same time). And it was so good that I read through it quickly and went out and bought all of Greenes other books.Greenes books paint a picture of reality as it is not as some want it to be. They give you the tools to protect yourself and thrive in the world. Honestly I feel like I've been given dynamite or the ten commandments after reading all his books. They are that powerful and good.So do I recommend this book? Absolutely for yourself and maybe your spouse or kids (so they can survive and thrive too). However I would advise you to not go around blabbing off about what you learned. When so many other people suck it makes it easier for you to stand out. A good magician never reveals their secerets.If you read this book also at minimum read the 48 Laws of Power. Also check out Greenes other books.

Anyone who may be under the mistaken assumption that this is just a "Hip Hop book" about a "rapper" (even slightly contradicting my own title) should change that perception right now. I am a fan of 50 cent as a rapper and business mogul, but Greene's work goes beyond that and even 50 Cent's own personal life as Curtis Jackson before becoming a rapper, to give you historical examples of everyone from Peter and Catherine the Great, to Niccolo Machiavelli, to Theolonius Monk, Moses, and Abraham Lincoln about how to accumulate and acquire personal power through leadership even in the face of fear and being willing to take risks instead of "passively aggressively" trying to get the things you want in society, which most people do. People may think that Greene's work promotes a kind of amorality or even worse a form of immorality, but I find that Robert Greene's work tends to have a strong moral backdrop, possibly with the exception of "Art of Seduction". In my opinion Greene's outlook may be that it is noble to have the goal of helping others, he even speaks highly of Lincoln's fight against slavery in this book, but your first moral obligation is to be able to help and empower yourself so then you can do things that will help and benefit others, but doing so on your specific and defined terms, that do not end up "helping others" and harming yourself, this is a lesson that can hurt to learn, even for myself, but you see it clearly over and over again, from business to interpersonal relationships, it's better to start off being a bit of an a%& and then become kind, than be kind and be full of resentment and frustration at life's challenges. This book tackles it head on and explains that fear can be a trap that no amount of extra reading, positive thinking or trite phrases will solve. I have never seen a book that clearly explains the impact of this inner fear and how it clouds your judgment and generates avoidance as a form of coping.Kudos to to Mr. Greene and Mr. Jackson for openly discussing and analyzing this problem and, more importantly, providing a step by step blueprint on how to move your life forward.

Mr. Greene's treatise about fear and its fundamental causes is essential in today's world. If one looks at our society as a whole, and tries to look as deeply as possible, one can see that most of one's actions and those of others are made up of fear based choices. By that I mean, people often choose things based on fear and may not know or be fully aware of it. This book opened my eyes to my own fears and forced me to see what really frightens me. Now that I'm clear on those things, I have a better understanding of how to deal with or even eliminate these unnecessary emotions. This book taught me that fear is just something you experience when you're not really prepared for something that matters to you. Think about it.

Hard to pin down precisely, It offers a sampling of what I’d call “1 o’clock discussions.” You know the ones; they happen after the party guests have departed and only you and your best friend remain behind, staring at the ceiling, chatting as you finish the last drinks of the night.Deutsch, equal parts physicist (his actual day job) and philosopher, creates a carefully constructed argument designed to prove that there are no theoretical limits on human knowledge. Can we stop the aging process? Given enough knowledge, sure. After all, the complexity of the problem is finite, and the biological processes underlying the aging process are relatively well understood. Given enough time and resources for the necessary research, there’s no reason that humans can’t prevent aging from occurring. (The practical implications of such an outcome would be fascinating, but that’s not the focus of the book.) Basically, Deutsch argues that any physical process that is not precluded by laws of nature (like traveling faster than the speed of light, for example) is achievable given sufficient knowledge and that if we don’t have that knowledge right now, we can obtain it.The foundation of his proof rests on two basic truisms: that in any endeavor problems are inevitable, and that all problems are soluble given sufficient knowledge.One of the many meanings of “infinity” (which he carefully lays out at the end of each chapter’s summary) is that there are no limits on what can be known. He says that suggesting that there are “bounds on the domains in which reason is the proper arbiter of ideas is a belief in unreason or the supernatural.” He buttresses his argument by offering a brief tour of history and The Enlightenment. Western civilization of the Pre-enlightenment remained stagnant during the Dark Ages specifically because organized authority squelched free inquiry and the creation of original conjectures which could be tested to conclusively rule out false ideas. Deutsch says that it is only through the creation of original conjectures that knowledge can be expanded. All assertions must be tested, and proof sought. Whatever is true withstands any degree of testing that one can muster, while that which is false crumbles. With the Enlightenment, explanatory knowledge became the most important determinant of physical events, not superstition or human authority. Once that occurred, the curve of charted knowledge growth became steep indeed with no end in sight.Accepting that humans have the theoretical power to become infinitely knowledgable, doesn’t mean that getting there is easy. Here, Deutsch delves into his theories of “optimism.” Continuing to pursue knowledge through the solution of problems is fundamentally an exercise in optimism. We believe that a solutions exist, even if we haven’t yet found them. If we try to improve things and fail it's because we did not know enough in time. Civilizations that have collapsed did so because they had insufficient knowledge of how to save themselves or they ran out of time before a solution could be found. The inhabitants of Easter Island are highlighted as an example as well as (somewhat controversially) our own current predicament as a civilization faced with the challenge of dramatic climate change. Deutsch suggests that climate change is simply another example of a problem that needs sufficient knowledge with which to devise a solution.Arguments like this can cause Deutsch to come across as cold and rational to a fault. While it’s hard to argue with the logic of his carefully constructed propositions, it can leave one searching for a little humanity behind the words. In this regard, “The Beginning of Infinity” can sometimes feel less like a late night conversation with a buddy and more like a lecture from Mr. Spock.But, just as that begins to happen, he manages to branch off into another fascinating exploration of Ideas writ large, covering topics such as quantum mechanics, the Multiverse, the mathematical impossibility of truly representational government, memes, beauty, creativity, sustainability, artificial intelligence, and the concept of mathematical infinity. Each one of these explorations is tied to the basic premise of the infinite expansion of knowledge, though some less successfully than others. For example, his exploration of beauty is completely devoid of the ineffable emotions that most of us associate with that quality. This is perhaps one of the only realms where logic has less to offer than unjustifiable irrationality.While not all of these topics hold together as a completely coherent whole, each is utterly fascinating in its own way (particularly his exploration of the multiverse, a concept so foreign to human experience, that the chapter calls for repeated readings to promote comprehension). Everything is so carefully laid out that you’re likely to be persuaded of Deutsch’s position that given enough time, there’s nothing that we can’t learn and that there are no problems which are insoluble. Overall, this book is a great source of brain food for anyone looking to sharpen their mental acuity, step out of the ordinary, and go for a walk with a brilliant mind.

This is definitely an interesting book and I learned a lot from it. But I suggest to look critically at it and not take it for granted as the truth. Ok, I m no philosopher, but I see that the author makes assumptions about humans and human society which just don't hold up. For example:"All evils are due to the lack of knowledge." Really? No, not all, far from it.Or the in the other chapter when it is stated that we always learn and absorb new ideas from conjecture and criticism. Again, seems like a big oversimplification. Yes, some ideas, in part, but our emotions, biases, psychological state play huge role i what we come to believe. And if the idea fits into what we value we would not criticize or test it before absorbing it. Maybe some people would, but most wouldn't.I understand that the author is a scientist and big proponent of Popper epistemology and that's how he looks at it. And that's how science and rational inquiry should work, even though I m sure even in science biases a psychology still play a big role. But I think the author is way too optimistic about the human nature.So, because I don't agree with the (some of) assumptions, the conclusions don't follow for me either. But I believe you can learn from a book even if you don't agree with the author and this book has a lot of value and touches a lot of different topics. So I recommend it, just be cautious and subject what the author says to criticism (as he recommends).

If this book were as difficult to understand as some of the comments on it are, it would not be one I'd want to read! I'm no scientist but I wanted to give it a try because I'd heard David Deutsch speaking and found him very easy to follow and absolutely fascinating, and I wanted more.Having read the book three times (and the bit about the Infinity Hotel four times to figure out what happened to the puppy!) and finding that I am getting more out of it with each reading, I can understand that it may be controversial in some respects, but I don't understand why it is attracting such intense and bizarre hostility. What am I missing? For me, the writing is crystal clear, charming and riveting, like the author himself when you hear him speak -- it's a sheer delight to read. It made me laugh out loud several times -- I LOVE that the author's sense of humor comes through even in what is a very deep, important book. And it even moved me to tears.The subject matter is super wide-ranging, including stuff about physics and mathematics (no formulas, thankfully), beauty (yes, really!), voting systems (why proportional voting systems are fundamentally unfair despite the best intentions of those proposing them), environmentalism (why we have it all wrong!), intriguing stuff about culture, history, philosophy, etc., etc. David Deutsch is truly a polymath.But what I personally find so enthralling is the way reading this book is challenging me and changing the way I think. I love the way all the apparently disparate issues are united in a single, coherent worldview having implications far beyond just what David Deutsch discusses in this book. As best I can tell, the author's worldview is vibrantly positive, optimistic (not to be confused with unrealistic), and rational (in the sense of being in favor of progress, solving problems and ending misery and suffering) -- a fundamentally humane worldview -- a beautiful, life-affirming, shining-beacon-of-light sort of worldview. For me, it has the ring of truth. Evidently for others, it is the work of the devil. But for anyone who loves ideas and thinking about things, The Beginning of Infinity is worth reading whether or not you agree with the author's ideas.

Very disappointed. Do NOT buy the Classic Reprint Series of this book, it is nothing more than a poor quality scan of each page of the original book. The pages are not straight nor do the even fill the page. Pictures are dark, text is unclear. Not worth the paper it is printed on, will be sending it back.

I couldn't believe it when I saw that this cookbook was available as a "new" book (authentic reproduction) again. I received it - probably as a birthday gift? I don't remember - when I was a young child, about 50 years ago. I have always been a cookbook reader, and I spent many happy hours as a child reading this book. So when I saw that it was available again, I eagerly bought a copy for the sake of nostalgia.As an object of nostalgia, I would rate it 5 stars. It looks exactly like the original, and has the same durable and convenient hardcover spiral binding that I remember. Although if you look carefully, you can tell that the cover is from a "photo of a photo," as the image isn't quite as crisp as an original would be. Also, the green glossy material used on the inside of the front & back covers was not in the original. However, everything else about the book is a perfect reproduction.As a 21st-century cookbook for children to use, I'd probably give it only 3 stars. There is a lot about cooking that has changed in the 60 years since this book was first published:* Our understanding of nutrition has improved significantly* We encounter a greater variety of ingredients, especially fresh produce, in our stores* Our food landscape has been enriched by many contributions from nearly every continent and every corner of the earth (I had definitely never heard of hummus or chiles rellenos when I used to read this book on lazy summer afternoons), and* Rather than seeing canned/highly processed foods as exciting miracles of modern culinary technology, we now see them as the less healthy and less tasty versions of food.This cookbook is definitely rooted in the food styles, tastes and knowledge of its mid-20th-century era.That being said, this was a very, VERY good children's cookbook for its era. The recipes are creative, attractive, and often whimsical. There is a LOT of information for a budding cook who doesn't want to just learn a particular recipe, but actually wants to learn how to cook - such as cooking methods and terminology, types of utensils, safety guidelines. It piques the interest through extras like the illustrations (including many gorgeous full-page color glossy photos of finished recipes) and the sidebar tips from the 12 kids who were the "Junior Testers" of all the recipes in the book.So, bottom line:1. If you are an adult who was in love with this book as a kid, buy it.2. If you are thinking of buying it for a child in your life today, I would say go ahead and buy it for its instructional value in the basics of cooking, but give the child a more contemporary children's cookbook at the same time.

My grandma's was falling out of the binding and she could find the chocolate chip cookies with her eyes closed. But this one was in great condition, so I guess I'll have more time to use it to rags. Love this book. And I was not expecting it at the steal of a price I got. I got lucky. 10 stars if I could.

Received the book. It is in remarkable condition for being nearly 30 years old.The cover of the book I received matches the photo on the listing....but not the description. Be forewarned, this book does NOT contain the beautiful photos described in the review. In fact it contains on a very few black and "white" (the book is old) illustrations. Other than feeling a tad bit ripped off that the book is not as described, it is in great, readable condition and appears to have all of it's pages intact. One of my aunts gave me this book when I was seven. My copy is worn to shreds—food stains on every page, cover hanging on by a wire—but I still use it, 45 years later. It’s important enough to have survived many, many moves; sometimes supplanted by the likes of Julia Child and Jacques Pepin; but when I’m called on to bring an Easter dish to a get-together, my thoughts go immediately to the Bunny Salad in this book, and it’s always a hit.How much to love! The recipes are cute and imaginative, fairly simple but delicious. The kitchen tips and advice are stellar for any age. How to set the table? It’s here. How to scramble eggs? Also here. Measuring, stirring, meal prep are all described and illustrated in a most kid friendly format.It’s safe; parental permission and supervision is invoked whenever heat or knives are involved.May I recommend the chocolate pudding? It’s the most stained page in my copy...I just purchased the newest edition for my seven year old grandson. I was thrilled that the cover is exactly the same as mine (though cleaner), and I hope it gives him the beginning of the same lifelong enjoyment of cooking as it gave me.

I had a first edition of this cookbook as a little girl. I have no clue whatever happened to that book, but I am so happy that I found this one. I gave it to my grandkids to have at my home for cooking with grandma. They have all penciled in their names on the pages that they want to cook from with grandma. The book only have drawings rather than photos, but that is fine as the recipes are not all that difficult and it just makes in more exciting for kids to see what the real deal looks like in the end.

This cookbook was purchsed as a gift for a 10 year old girl. She loved the gift and together with her mother, has prepared a couple of the recipes in this book. she said it was really easy to read and understand, and it gave her a list of supplies that was required to make each recipe. The pictures are colorful which makes it even more interesting and eye catching. I, a senior lady, still have my original cookbook just like this which was given to me by my deceased mother. As a child, I loved using it and cooking with my mother's help.

My initial reaction to the "Save the Hillbillies" slant reported for this book was "Why bother?" Most of the folks in that category tend to be uneducated, violent, prone to addiction with unstable families and reflect a host of other tendencies that really don't need replication. So it was a bit of a surprise to find the author, despite that background, managed to make it through Yale Law School.At first, one might assume that it was really some quirky circumstances that permitted that accomplishment and you would be right. As he acknowledges, a few breaks in the wrong direction and he could have suffered a situation far worse. Had it not been for the refuge of a strong grandmother, a seasoning and maturing stint in the Marines and innate intelligence and drive he admits he never would have made it.More of a memoir than a dissertation it was an interesting read. And, I tend to agree with the idea that the hillbilly in the holler is really a stand-in for America's blue collar workers. As the recent election proved, if we do not find a path to the solid middle class through education and training these folks are truly doomed and the nation as a whole will be poorer for it.

There is a lot to take in here, even for someone that's seen this life up close in many of its many guises.While ostensibly about the particular culture of the West Virginia Scots-Irish underclass, anyone that has seen white poverty in America's flyover states will recognize much of what is written about here. It is a life on the very edge of plausibility, without the sense of extra-family community that serves as a stabilizing agent in many first-generation immigrant communities or communities of color. Drugs, crime, jail time, abusive interactions without any knowledge of other forms of interaction, children growing up in a wild mix of stoned mother care, foster care, and care by temporary "boyfriends," and in general, an image of life on the edge of survival where even the heroes are distinctly flawed for lack of knowledge and experience of any other way of living.This is a story that many of the "upwardly mobile middle class" in the coastal areas, often so quick to judge the lifestyles and politics of "those people" in middle America, has no clue about. I speak from experience as someone that grew up in the heartland but has spent years in often elite circles on either coast.Two things struck me most about this book.First, the unflinching yet not judgmental portrayal of the circumstances and of the people involved. It is difficult to write on this subject without either glossing over the ugliness and making warm and fuzzy appeals to idealism and human nature, Hollywood style, or without on the other hand descending into attempts at political persuasion and calls to activism. This book manages to paint the picture, in deeply moving ways, without committing either sin, to my eye.Second, the author's growing realization, fully present by the end of the work, that while individuals do not have total control over the shapes of their lives, their choices do in fact matter—that even if one can't direct one's life like a film, one does always have the at least the input into life that comes from being free to make choices, every day, and in every situation.It is this latter point, combined with the general readability and writing skill in evidence here, that earns five stars from me. Despite appearances, I found this to be an inspiring book. I came away feeling empowered and edified, and almost wishing I'd become a Marine in my younger days as the author decided to do—something I've never thought or felt before.I hate to fall into self-analysis and virtue-signaling behavior in a public review, but in this case I feel compelled to say that the author really did leave with me a renewed motivation to make more of my life every day, to respect and consider the choices that confront me much more carefully, and to seize moments of opportunity with aplomb when they present themselves. Given that a Hillbilly like the author can find his way and make good choices despite the obstacles he's encountered, many readers will find themselves stripped bare and exposed—undeniably ungrateful and just a bit self-absorbed for not making more of the hand we've been dealt every day.I'm a big fan of edifying reads, and though given the subject matter one might imagine this book to be anything but, in fact this book left me significantly better than it found me in many ways. It also did much to renew my awareness of the differences that define us in this country, and of the many distinct kinds of suffering and heroism that exist.Well worth your time.

I spent most of the last 2 days reading this book and I can't stop thinking about it. I never heard of the author until I saw him on Morning Joe a few days ago but I looked him up and read several articles he wrote for various publications so I bought his book. He grew up in a family of what he describes as "hillbillies" from Kentucky but spent most of his life in Ohio. His family identified as being strongly Christian even though their behavior was frequently not particularly Christian. He was mostly raised by his grandparents along with his half-sister because his mother was an addict who went from husband to husband and he barely knew his father. He did poorly in school and was only redeemed by the fact that a cousin pushed him into joining the Marines. From there he went to Ohio State and then to Yale Law School.He writes very directly and honestly about the problems with white, working class America and why it is in decline. While part of the problem is societal, he believes there is an internal problem that government cannot do anything about. He suggests that tribalism, mistrust of outsiders and "elites," violence and irresponsibility among family members, parents without ethics and a sense of responsibility, terrible work ethics, and an us-against-them mentality is dooming the people who live that way to becoming poorer, more addicted, and more marginalized. Excellent book and very thought-provoking.
