I originally read the audio book edition of "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett and later read it on my Kindle for book club. The Help is most definitely on my short list for all time favorite books. I am not sure which was better the audio book or the Kindle read. This is the first novel by this author and I do not know how she will ever top herself. The book is about the relationship between White women living in the deep South in the early 1960's and their Negro domestic help. It shows a time, not all that long ago, when there was no such thing as political correctness, when Whites, especially in the South, had no problems showing their Negro help who was boss. At that time in Jackson, Mississippi, a Black woman was allowed in a White grocery store only if she was wearing her white maid's uniform. The grocery stores in the Negro section of town were not well lit, not too clean and not very well stocked. For a maid to speak out of turn was reason enough for immediate firing, if not putting herself and her family in physical danger. To characterize the racial condition of the American South in 1963 as American Apartheid, would not be an exaggeration. But, this is only the backdrop of the story. The real story is about the relationship that develops between one White woman, Skeeter and the Black maids, Abilene and Minny, she eventually writes a book about. Skeeter recently graduated from college with a degree in Journalism, which was all well and good, except all anyone, especially, in this case, Skeeter's mother, really expected from women who attended college in that time was to get their MRS.degree; anything less was all but useless. Skeeter, was an exception to the rule. She was determined to be a writer and unlike her close friends, with whom she played bridge on a weekly basis and was a member of the local women's organizations, Skeeter had a sense that all was not well regarding race relations in the South. In her attempts to find something worthwhile to write about, she decides on exploring what it is like for the "colored maids" to work for the white women of Jackson, Mississippi, from the maid's point of view. And so begins the relationship that develops between Skeeter and Abilene and Minny, who work for her friends. The author, who is White, takes on the task of giving voices to the Negro maids who are interviewed for her book and those voices are believable and pitch perfect. This was the first book I have read in many years, perhaps decades, in which I felt a kinship with these main characters to the extent that I already miss them, as if they had been guests staying at my home and have now left, leaving me with a sad void. I hope that Kathryn Stockett sees fit to write a sequel to"The Help", so that her readers can know what happens to her characters in the years to come. If you are an avid reader or if you only read a few books a year, you will want to read "The Help".

OK, so I know I am just about the last person on the planet to read this book, but I picked it up at my mom-in-law's house and got completely hooked.I had avoided it in the past because there was a certain level of hysteria about it, and when people go around quoting books, I kind of get turned off them ("You is kind..."). Also, I had some unease about the idea that the white author was using black stories to sell a book - it felt a little like literary blackface.ANYWAY, reservations aside, I just completely and absolutely loved this. Lovely characters, nailbiting story (as much as I loved the book, I was terrified the whole time that The Thing was going to happen), beautiful message. It was just great. And it dealt with its subject matter with appropriate sympathy and sensitivity.For anyone not living on Earth, the story revolves around three characters, Skeeter (yup), a white girl who wants to be a writer and is told by a New York publisher to write about what she cares about, Aibeleen, a domestic helper (they are called "maids" in the book) who has lost her son but nonetheless loves the white people's children she cares for, and Minny, also a maid who has a bit of a problem with talking back to her unreasonable white employers.Well, it turns out that the thing that Skeeter cares about is civil rights (although she doesn't quite realise it yet). She sets about writing a book about the relationship between white Southern women and their help, and asks Aibeleen, who works for a friend of hers, to get other maids to talk to her. Only problem is that they are actually risking their lives - and certainly their livelihoods - to do so.The Help is an emotional rollercoaster with a touching message and a strong undercurrent of hope. If you, like me, weren't sure about reading it, I can't recommend it strongly enough.

Comparisons between the book and the movie may be unfair. The book contains so much information that it would be impossible to include all of itin two hours. That said, while I liked the movie, the book was far more enjoyable. The author made clever use of the three narrators. At first,I thought I might be put off by that choice, but once you adjust to the different voices, the rhythm adds an element to the book that a single point-of-view wouldn't have provided. The three principal characters speak for themselves.There are profoundly moving moments in the book and the movie. There are some surprising passages. Kathryn Stockett's humor is a riot. I wasreminded of some of the funniest lines in Steel Magnolias, but I think that the humor is much more deftly handled in this book.I wish that I had written The Help. I'm glad that I read it. What a great book!

Gripping account of racial interactions in the deep South in the 1960's by an author who grew up there in the aftermath of the Civil Rights struggle. The book does have its flaws. How many times can the central characters "narrow" their eyes and how many times can the protagonist escape her parents suffocating attention to meet with her friend's black housekeeper without being found out? The plot may stretch credulity towards its conclusion, yet the book is hard to put down. Black critics have pointed at negative black stereotypes, especially black men but, valid or not, the story mostly rings true while projecting a ringing indictment of the 1960's white community. As such it serves as a powerful reminder today that much more progress must yet be made if the US is ever to be home to a racially egalitarian society.

A great story. This book gives us a completely different look at the holocaust. In a way, more close up and personal, since it shows how individuals, who did not escape to a free land, dealt with their lives. We are shown how the damage done to the survivor left scars so deep that they were (and are) passed down to children, grandchildren, etc. as if by a genetic chain. Deeply personal story yet lovely and sad. You will not regret buying this book. We read about France's involvement in such a shameful way. We are made to see the long lasting scars that reach down from survivors to children, grandchildren ad infinitum.

A loving family split by mystery and an abandoned house in France make an absorbing tale. She loves her Grandparents but is unable to comprehend why they live separate lives, Grandmother in the U.S. and Grandfather in Switzerland.. Finally in her teen years she finds they are Holocaust survivors, one a doctor and he a translator at the War Crimes trials after WWII, and this shapes their lives. And there is the centuries old abandoned house which she inherits and tries to restore in France. Therein lives the love story which helps tie it all together. After surviving the horrors of the war and the difficult years following, how could the Grandparents be otherwise?

Miranda wrote about her quest to understand the lives of her grandparents who were alive during the Holocaust. It was a story of her life and her grandparents. I was expecting more about the Holocaust. It was an easy read, interesting, but I would not have read if I knew it was more about her. Interesting story, just not what I expected.

I had zero interest in why the author's grandparents divorced and didn't talk for fifty years. That certainly happens frequently enough in life that it's not so exceptional. What was exceptional was this writer's writing. Man, is she a fantastic writer. I was so impressed with the sample that even though I could've cared less as to her grandparents' estrangement, I bought the book. I'm going to be repetitive here. She is a great, great writer. Just fantastic.I did begin to lose interest at about the 67% point of my Kindle book and began skimming. I also could've done without the parts where she imagines what might have been the case with her grandparents. For me, that's about as interesting as when authors detail their dreams. Ugh.I am going to check if the author has written anything else. Haven't come across this level of writing in ages. Recommended.

This book is about the Holocaust, but is different from most books about that subject. It is the story of her grandfather's ana grandmother's marriage and divorce. In their 90s, they have not spoken in 50 years. Their story is brought to life by their grand daughter.

This is an amazing story told remarkably well. I would have enjoyed meeting the grandparents as they both seemed so interesting...and, what lives they lived. This is an inspirational read, one I'm certain everyone would enjoy!!!!

I had long wanted to read A Fifty-Year Silence but I was somewhat underwhelmed. Mouillot spends the majority of the book imagining the war years of her Jewish grandparents while coming to terms with her own independent adulthood. Her extended education allowed her the time to live in France, research her grandparents' past, and truly establish herself as a writer and woman.The oft-repeated phrase "Never Forget" becomes a burden that Holocaust survivors must carry. Mouillot describes how WWII colored every experience of her grandparents and, by extension, her attitudes about life and love. Her grandparents actually spent little time physically together since their refugee status gave them little control over their own lives.Her grandfather, Armand, served as a translator at the Nuremberg Trials and Mouillot contends that this horrific experience made it impossible for him to become a loving husband and father. Her grandmother, Anna, by contrast, viewed the search for a joyous life as a true indicator of being a survivor. Both are rigid thinkers so there was little in common to make a life. Despite their differences, Mouillot loves them both and longs to discover their love story. Inevitably there are few concrete answers.

The author tells the story of her search for her grandparents’ story, the story of two Jewish refugees during WWII who lived through the Shoah. They carry the burden of being survivors, and the dreadful weight of the remembrance of those who did not. The author’s grandfather was a translator for the Nuremberg Trials, which spelled out in awful detail the horror his parents and relatives experienced first hand. The experience destroyed his ability to experience joy, and his wife finally decided to leave with their young daughter, to make a life for herself and LIVE. She and her estranged husband didn’t speak again—for over 60 years. The author spent 10 years researching their story while she made her own—met her husband and had her own daughter in the same small French village where her grandparents ended their relationship. Beautifully, poetic writing.A must read for family historians, those interested in telling their own or a family history, and for all those hoping to Never Forget.

I Iiked the style of this authors writing. With a very good plot, i thought Dean the main character was a bit dim witted, or a bit slow to realise whats going on, and could of been sharper. There are some very funny commentry between Dean and Stu Foley the investigator. Overall a very good enjoyable read. Definately would buy more by this author !!!

I read a lot ( 3 or 4 books a week ). I read a lot of mystery and suspense novels too. This was as good or better than anything I've read in a long time. A great plot, smooth dialogue and a nice style. I highly recommend it. I look forward to reading Mr. Scarsella's newest novel.

I enjoyed this tale that revealed the tiers of our justice system. The story is totally believable and was written in a style that held my interest.

I read so many legal themed books but none like this one. Great insight into the investigations of crooked and politically charged attorneys. Looking for his next book

I like lawyer books. This one is a bit different in that it's centered around the lawyers who work for the agency investigating and disciplining lawyers. Enjoyable read.

Great read. Vince Scarsella has not disappointed the reader as this novel follows “The Anonymous Man,” and is equally well written.This novel to me compares to the new TV show "How To Get Away With Murder" as both creates the scenario that lawyers can commit the perfect crime. A murder has been carried out with precision that only a lawyer with many years of experience can accomplish. Great read enjoyed it very much!!

Most of us probably see lawyers are either beleaguered heroes trying in work within a broken system or as greedy, slime balls who are looking for ways to exploit the system just to make money. This is a different view. This is a look at the lawyers who police their own and the politics that can warp that process.I can easily imagine this plot of this book playing out in real life because people are just that ambitious, greedy, and have that little regard for other people. We really do need people like Dean Alessi and Stu Foley enforcing the ethical standards that lawyers are supposed to live by. I found myself cheering them on, even in the face of overwhelming obstacles. They are likable, yet imperfect, guys. If someone asked me if they should read this book, I would tell they they should.That said, I couldn't give it five stars. There are times the characters feel a bit flat and stereotypical. Most of the time, the female characters feel tacked-on and serve mainly to distract or burden the main characters. This is not a problem confined just to this author, but for some reason, it seemed more obvious here.Vincent L. Scarsella has written a good book. With a little polish, he could go on to write great ones.

First, I commend Dr. Curatola for addressing the relationship of the oral biome to overall health. Yet, I feel that too much content was devoted to topics such as exercise and diet. This book might be better for a novice consumer who does not have a knowledge base regarding an anti-inflammatory diet, etc. Second, the discussion about the care of the mouth with recommended toothpastes, etc. was the most informative.

I have ongoing issues with gum disease and with the latest I read about the importance of maintaining good bacteria, his approach does feel like the right next step. I can't wait to try the recipes he has in the book and the purchase may be worth those alone. (Maybe nothing groundbreaking but nice to have a lot of good recipes in one place as I try to change my diet.) I also look forward to changing my toothpaste and trying the exercise program that he recommends.

 This is one of the best books I have ever read on medical related information. I am so impressed about the in-depth and integrity of Dr. Gerald Curtaola

The cultural parts of this novel were completely new to me and for that new knowledge I am grateful. Originally written in Tamil, this is nicely translated- the writing flows. Thanks to Edelweiss for the ARC.

I outright disliked this book. A couple in rural 19th century India struggle to have a child. Their families are horrible. Their neighbors are horrible. Their friends are horrible. They taunt the husband, calling him impotent. They deride the wife as a cursed loser. By the end, even the couple themselves are horrible. The husband thinks it's funny to tease the wife by telling her that he might take another wife. Then he's surprised and annoyed when she cries. Ultimately they consider taking part in an anonymous ritual that might result in conception, but it was impossible to like them or even to sympathize with them by that point. Skip this book. Read something cheerful, like The Road.

I found the descriptions of Tamil life interesting, since I knew nothing of this culture. However, the plot was a one-trick pony: a couple is infertile. There is a tradition where for one night, women can have sex with anyone roaming the streets. Will Ponna, the wife, do it to conceive a child? And that's the plot. There is no advancement of action- just the same commentary from the villagers over and over, and the waiting until the night when she might have sex with a pickup. Finally, in the last couple of pages, she either does or doesn't. I won't say which, to avoid a spoiler. Structurally, this just fell flat for me.

This book was so boring, I couldn’t finish it. I struggled to get through one third and gave up. The dialogu and characters were dull and nothing happens. The couple were in love but couldn’t conceive a baby. All dialogue revolved around this issue, except for some petty arguments.

I've always done well in math but now I'm in my 40's with a teenager in Jr High.Yep. I couldn't remember what to do with the complicated problems so I looked for a book. All of their resources are online.This book is awesome. It shows you the problems and it works them for you with notes scribbled on the side like college day notes.I've actually enjoyed doing the problems in my spare time much to the dismay of coworkers. It feels like doing Sudoku :)The book is beefy and looks intimidating but once you start using it, it just flows.Wish I had access to this book when I learned algebra. Also, it seems to cover both Algebra 1 and 2.

I knew that .. I had read the reviews and decided not to buy it for that reason ... but then I forgot, and in a panic for more practice problems for my student, I bought it without remembering. It probably would be great for reviewing the material, or even teaching it to yourself maybe, but if you are looking for practice problems, you don't want this book.

Each chapter tackles an area of algebra and provides lots and lots of examples. Each concept is demonstrated clearly. One of the many things I like about this book is the numerous notes in the margins which explain key concepts or places it would otherwise be easy to get tripped up on.The tone is a lot like the Dummies books--light and easy to follow. Yet it a serious book--something the Dummies books can't always claim.I also like how they label the difficult problems with a skull and crossbones, so you know before you begin that those problems will be toughies.Finally, the book is organized the way it should be: easy stuff first, and then you slowly build on what you learn. If you get stuck--and the authors anticipate this at critical points in the book--they even give you the references you need to go back and brush up on something.This is a great place to start if, like me, you have become very rusty in math. Work through all the problems, go slowly, be patient, and your math skills will definitely improve, well, exponentially!

I had not taken any math classes in college for over a decade, therefore, my algebra skills were lacking.This book helped me to get my skills back, and I am about to graduate with my bachelors in aerospace engineering!If you work this book from cover to cover, you will be an algebra ninja!

I found this to be the absolute best algebra book I have ever used. I am actually giving it 4.5 stars. The reason being, although it is phenomenal, there are some errors and I just can't justify a full 5 stars to a math book with errors (more on this later).I'll throw out my math background and why I bought this book. I've taken Algebra I (high school), Algebra II (high school), Algebra w/Trig (high school), pre-calculus (high school), Intermediate College Algebra, College Trig, and College Algebra. The 3 college classes were over 10 years ago. Absolutely nothing has given me the clarity that this book provided (with the caveat that I'm older and more serious about the subject now). I am going back to school and taking College Algebra and Trig again soon so I bought this book as a refresher.The style of the book (the notes, witty comments, and hints) are great and the fact that he goes through all of the steps and explains them really made the concepts hit home for me. I hit this book at a clip of 3 hours per day and was able to get through the entire thing between 2/27/12 and 3/11/12 (with one day sort of off where I only worked for 46 minutes - yeah I did actually track my progress:) ). So if you want to get through it, that's how long it's gonna take (more or less). Prior to this book I went all the way through the Maran Illustrated Effortless Algebra book (which took a little over a week). Effortless Algebra doesn't even come close to the HBoAP. I also have Practical Algebra (A Self-Teaching Guide) and College Algebra Demystified - neither of which compare to the HBoAP. I actually found myself fascinated by Algebra while going through this book and I'm looking forward to taking my classes (and then moving beyond!).Now, there were some errors:Page 229 (problem 10.34) should read - The 2x2 Matrix "RIGHT" (not left) of the dotted line is A^-1, the inverse matrix of A.Page 243 (problem 11.18) a should = -19 NOT -16 as (-38/2) in the previous step = -19Page 254 (problem 11.44) The top row of synthetic division should have a -9 NOT a +9Page 408 (problem 18.23) The final answer should be e^g(e) = e^1 ------ which simplifies to g(e) = 1. The answer IS NOT g(3) = 1. (Mike was kind enough to answer this one for me via email as it baffled me how he came to this answer and I spent an hour staring at it.)Page 518 (problem 23.5) When solving the equation using the quadratic formula you are solving for "y" but it's evaluated for "x" at the end.Granted there aren't that many errors for a book with 1,000 problems in it, but since these are all skull questions (really hard ones) they should have the correct answers. I know that no book is perfect and errors happen, but I cannot give it 5 stars because of these errors, not so much for my sake, but for the super-beginner algebra person who may not spot these and could be really led astray due to these errors.I also felt that Mike toned down the explanations in the logarithm sections, which is probably the hardest section in the book. I think if this book is revised that this section needs more problems and more detailed explanations. Outside of these minor issues, this book is outstanding.Edit: As a followup I took the COMPASS test today (3/12-12) and tested into pre-calculus thanks to this book and the time I put into studying.

I expected this to have lots of problems to work through but surprisingly there wasn't enough. This book is not a comprehensive guide of algebra by any means. At times I felt I had gaps in my knowledge and didn't understand where I went wrong. The problem with this book is that it doesn't explain every rule or the entire syntax to you. It simply provides problems and shows you how to solve it. This is why this is definitely not a work book since usually they tell you everything you need to know before solving a problem. What this book is good at is explaining concepts that may have seemed confusing and showing you a method or few to solve them.If you're confused about a topic of Algebra or simply want to learn it then this book is fine but I was looking for a book to self teach myself Algebra. The book will not tell you all the rules of algebra so it is not a complete guide but merely supplementary material providing clarity on concepts. It does this by explaining in plain English, with annotations, illustrations, and worked solutions. I must say I am impressed by how the author fully explains every step of working through a problem, which is lacking in many other maths texts I have read. As he says many other maths people have a tendency to skip steps, and they assume you know them, which can cause problems for a learner.
