Roz Chast grew up in Brooklyn. Her cartoons began appearing in the New Yorker in 1978. Since then, she has published more than one thousand cartoons in the magazine. She has written and illustrated many books, including the national bestseller Going into Town, What I Hate: From A to Z, and the collections of her own cartoons The Party After You Left and Theories of Everything. As someone who is dealing with an aged mother (97) and presumably rapidly moving into old age himself, I found this book poignant, funny, sad, moving, realistic, depressing and thoroughly enjoyable. I totally loved it (even when it was sad) and cannot recommend it highly enough. But who knew that Ms. Chast and I had the same parents?

* As I write this, my 83-year-old dad is withering away in an assisted living facility, riddled with Alzheimer's. Sometimes I want my Dad to die now - because he's unaware of his suffering - and he'd cuss me out if he knew he is turning into what Roz Chast's mother describes as "a pulsating piece of protoplasm." I feel guilty feeling this way - but "Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant?" makes such forbidden thoughts feel normal.* (BTW, don't buy the Kindle version. This title, with its colorful cartoons and photos - as well as its handsome construction as a hardcover book - truly belongs on your coffee table. I sampled the Kindle version, didn't like it, and bought the hardcover.)* This book feels weirdly clairvoyant. It exposed my doubts, fears and paradoxical feelings about watching my parents die slowly before my eyes. I've read almost everything about the subject of aging and dying. And yet this is the first book that captures the exhausting experience of caring for aging parents, e.g., that it's sometimes gross - (see passages about hoarding, incontinence and "grime") - AND funny - (see "The Wheel of Doom" and Roz Chast's father's obsession with myriad bank books, decades old).* The author's hand-wringing about whether there's going to be enough money to pay for her parents' care is spot on. How long will the money last if they live "X" more years vs. "Y" more years? I do these calculations every month, constantly updating and trying to prepare for the worst. Any savings will be drained by expenses which will have no effect on terminal outcomes. If the daily care and feeding of your parents doesn't kill you - then the avalanche of paperwork and legal stuff that must be done - will.* Hence despite the preference to "talk about something more pleasant," if nothing else, this book demonstrates why planning for our parents' end-of-life care must begin NOW - not later.* I recommend this book for every person who's on the brink of going insane about their aging parents. Give it to caregivers, give it to your siblings, give it to anyone who hates dark subjects - but who can handle them if they're presented in a disarmingly funny style that's accessible - yet still honest. (I don't think I can read another "text-only" book about the "death spiral" of aging parents.)* In sum, "Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant?" takes the hard edges off some things while inflicting blunt-force traumas about others. Roz Chast nails the impending death of our parents in a way that feels like a landmark work. I know such praise sounds silly given the sea of excellent books out there about aging. But I've never seen this subject presented in an original, humorous and touching way, complete with hand-drawn illustrations and color photos. It avoids the trap of being overly optimistic, forcing us to confront the gruesomeness of mortality - while STILL providing an emotional "lift" about something universal.* This book makes going through one of the darkest periods of my life - feel almost worth it.

There is a saying in the Navy: "any ship can be a minesweeper...once." For those of us not in the medical or elder care professions, dealing with our parents' decline and death is an emotional roller coaster; a harrowing experience. One can't be fully prepared for the emotional, physical and financial challenges. People are living longer, many families are smaller and through jobs and choice we are not always living in the same community with our parents. Chast is very honest about not having lived an idyllic childhood and her parents weren't the best (or worst) role models. Most of us try to do the right things for our parents when we become responsible for their care, and I suspect most of us aren't candidates for sainthood.She crafts a caring and candid portrait of two flawed but colorful people who stood together for nearly 70 years in a rock solid marriage. She is also remarkably honest about her own conflicting emotions.Her parents foibles and phobias, hoarding and occasional irrationality clearly drove their daughter to distraction. Still, they lived well into their 90s on their own terms. The sadness of their ultimate physical and mental decline is only partially absolved by their daughter's fulfilling her duty of care and the hard won insights as she comes to terms with and assists them in their final journey..For those of us who have been through this passage, it is a tale well told. For those who have not, buckle up.

This memoir is so honest (brutally so at times I suppose)and so well told with terrific humor, that I must say if you have an aging parent(s)that you are caring for, concerned about, worry about, wonder about or if you recently lost an elderly parent(s)who you took care of, this book let's you know you aren't alone while allowing you a moment or two to laugh (even through tears). Roz Chast expresses feelings that I think many people (certainly I) have felt during this journey - we simply don't voice them and occasionally feel guilty for having the thoughts. It is good to know that the frustration and other feelings you have at times while dealing with a parent (especially one with dementia) is shared. For me, this book was like having drinks with a good friend. I believe, in the end, Roz showed her deep loving connection in her own perfect way via this book. I think it was expressed in a way her mother would have understood even if a few other reviewers didn't.

Yep, there's no maps... and that's okay (it tells you where to get a map). So why do I like this book? Two reasons:1 - It's a LOT of hikes. 918 to be exact. They basically took the Moon Washington & Oregon hiking guides and smashed them into one. There are few, if any, guides out there that cover this same breadth of information (if anything, you'll have to buy a set of books to match it). When you've got that itch to get outside and need some ideas, it's pretty nice to have all these hikes at your fingertips, in one handy resource.2 - All hikes are rated by scenery. Any trail guide worth its salt lists the difficulty, but scenic-ness is much more rare. Sure it's subjective, but when you're short on time and want to impress your date/in-laws/friends-from-out-of-town with a mind-blowing hike, it's sure better than nothing.Still, there's much room for improvement. For comparison, take Moon's "California Hiking" guide - a book from the same publisher, with the exact same format (no maps and all), and yet that book is respected and has many devotees - it's considered one of the bibles of California hiking. What's different?The California guide was first published in 1994, and currently in its 9th edition. The authors have had time to fix the errors and fine-tune the writing. That last bit is more important than it seems - within the 2 or 3 paragraphs allotted to each hike, the writers pack in all the info you need: why the trail is worth hiking, the best time to visit, starting and total elevations, when to come see the wildflowers, wry humor, anecdotes - all compactly weaved into engaging trail directions. It seems like a given, but the Pacific NW guide only occasionally meets these standards (elevation gain is a big detail that's often missing).I think over time, though - with some work and dedication - there's no reason this book couldn't be as good. But even in its present state, it's still useful to have.(And a few more tidbits if you're bored):- Under "Maps", the Washington portion of the guide lists "For a map of X National Forest/Park, contact the Outdoor Recreation Information Center at the downtown Seattle REI." Over and over, through the whole book. First of all, that seems like a waste of space to keep repeating, if it's just going to be the same thing. Secondly, is there really no other place to get that map? Like maybe, say, from the U.S. Forest Service or national park visitor center? And thirdly, why does it assume we're all based in Seattle?- While the Washington portion is a little better in the loose, engaging writing department, the Oregon portion feels more comprehensive. I can't vouch for the whole state, but the Washington author misses quite a few outstanding hikes in the Columbia Gorge area (only 2 hikes listed!) - Silver Star Mountain, Cape Horn, Table Mtn, Coyote Wall, the Klickitat trail, and the Catherine Creek area, to name a few. And only ONE(!) listed hike for the San Juan islands! The Cascades and National Parks are pretty well covered though.- The Oregon author is pretty stingy with handing out high scenery ratings. There's only a handful of 10's to be found, and I don't think it's because Oregon isn't beautiful. Since I'm more accustomed to the Moon California guide, I just mentally add +1 points to each listing. (I know it's silly and arbitrary, but I can't help it)- While I haven't encountered any errors with mileages that other reviewers have mentioned, there are typos here and there. One hike is rate a "7" difficulty (on a 1-to-5 scale... I guess it's pretty rough). Also, the ratings can be inconsistent - I've found several instances where trails with a 1000'+ elevation gain are given the easiest rating. That should never be the case. But again, nothing that can't be ironed out in future editions.

I used this book on two recent hikes. Turns out that there were several errors in directions and in the end, I got lost just getting to the trailhead. Specifically the hike around Battle Ground Lake has numerous errors in directions and the hike itself was labeled as being seven miles which was wrong. The hike was only less than a mile long.The book is too heavy to really take along on the hikes.I love all the variety and the number of hikes available and I plan to keep on trying. Just saying....

I probably should've bought this book a couple years ago but hindsight is 20/20. Overall, it is a beginner's guide to SDR and has some handy links for things to try out, particularly useful as it is all in one place. Information is a little dated but nothing that can't be Googled. If you are curious labouRERs, it's not a bad place to start.

It does cover the setup well and has a good start of you working the radio to find most of the good stuff

I'm a resident in internal medicine, and in my line of work ekgs play a major role. I really need to know how to read and interpret ekgs. I read multiple resources including online articles but didn't find such an amazing book as this. This book is easy to read, easy to understand with its simplistic ways and diagrams. It'll make you want to learn ekgs. I advise this book to anyone wanting to learn ekgs regardless of which stage your at, it's good for medical students, doctors, and nurses.Highly rate it.

I'm a medical student. My instructors recommended we order Dubin's EKG book. It is good, but this book is better. It contains more information, has clearer explanations, and is all around better. You will not get more information unless you get an electrophysiology textbook. I would strongly recommend this book.

I was a fourth year medical student at the time I read this book. It is fantastic. The first chapter sets you up with everything you need to know and the remainder of the book keeps coming back to those few basic concepts that makes it easy to understand in a way that forces you to grasp the electrophysiological events taking place in an EKG rather than just memorizing patterns and shapes. It is a quick read and will help a ton on clinical rotations or just to freshen up your EKG skills

This book rocks so much. It understands that you're tired and hungry and your cardiology exam is tomorrow and you really don't want to read five unnecessary pages on the varying presentations of Wolff-Parkinson-White trying to figure out how to ID it.

Love this book. A lot of people like Dubin's, but that book just wasn't for me. This is the only EKG book that actually helped me. I say that if Dubin's or one of the other famous or popular ones is not for you try this one. I felt it explained a lot of the 'why' to things.

Used it in medical school. Best book to learn ekg for cardio and the wards. Easy enough for a non medical or allied health student to purchase and learn ekg. I have heard it isn't sufficient for a cardiology or other specialty residency as it doesn't dive in incredibly deep to certain rare readouts, butt for clinical rotations and below this is the #1 source for learning ekg.

First year med student here. Doing extremely well on cardio section. This book is clear and to the point, which is great especially when you have other things to do. English is my third language and I was able to finish this book in less than a week, reading 2-3 chapters a day. I expect I'll quickly read this again to prepare for Step 1 and then again before intern year. Highly recommended.

Honestly this goes into so much detail and certain parts are just very complex even with the more simplified explanations of it. But it does explain the segments and complexes better than my text book.

About the Author

Jane D. McLeod is Associate Dean for Social and Historical Sciences and Graduate Education and Professor of Sociology, at Indiana University. Her research considers health as both cause and consequence of inequality with special attention to life course considerations. She has co-edited two other volumes for Springer: Mental Health, Social Mirror (with William R. Avison and Bernice A. Pescosolido) and the Handbook of the Sociology of Health, Illness and Healing (with Bernice A. Pescosolido, Jack K. Martin, and Anne Rogers). She also co-edited The Sociology of Mental Illness: A Comprehensive Reader (with Eric R. Wright) for Oxford University Press. In 2014, she received the Leonard I. Pearlin Award for Distinguished Contributions to the Sociological Study of Mental Health from the Mental Health section of the American Sociological Association.Michael Schwalbe received his Ph.D. in sociology in 1984 from Washington State University. His research and writing have focused on how self-concept formation and identity work are implicated in the reproduction of inequality. His books include Unlocking the Iron Cage: The Men’s Movement, Gender Politics and American Culture; The Sociologically Examined Life; Remembering Reet and Shine: Two Black Men, One Struggle; Rigging the Game: How Inequality Is Reproduced in Everyday Life; and, most recently, Manhood Acts: Gender and the Practices of Domination. Laureth (yes, there is a story behind her unusual name) is the daughter of a writer who has made his fame and fortune through writing comedic novels. There's a shift in Laureth's father though, and he begins to grow more serious and introverted, consumed with writing this book regarding coincidences found within life, investigating whether or not they are, in fact, mere coincidences or does the truth go deeper? While he focuses on research, Laureth runs her father's website, answering emails from fans in his name. Shortly after Laureth's father goes away on a research trip -- she believes he was supposed to go to some place like Switzerland or Austria -- she gets an email from someone in America saying they have her father's fieldwork journal. How did this uber-important journal land in America?! Laureth decides to set out on a journey to retrieve the journal and find out what happened to her father, but because she is blind she must take along her younger brother to help her through the numerous challenges of airports, public transportation and various customer service areas. As Laureth and her brother slowly start to unravel the mystery, she also gives the reader an eye-opening glimpse into how people with disabilities are commonly treated, hence the title She Is Not Invisible.This book took a few chapters for me to really get into, as I tried to feel out where it might be heading, but ultimately I found myself completely fascinated and entranced with this novel. So much so that I found myself surprised that this is marketed to a YA audience! I say this only because some of the material, I thought, got pretty meta... particularly when the reader is given the excerpts from the journal of Laureth's father, where he jots down his thoughts and ideas after researching the lives of well-known writers & scientists such as Einstein, Jung, Freud, Pauli and Koestler and how their personal lives were affected by their findings on the topic of assumed coincidences. At times it even reminded me a bit of the Jim Carrey film The Number 23.Also addressed within the story, which I quite liked, was the topic of disabilities and how they are commonly perceived by people who don't have them, the discriminations that can follow those disabilities. Laureth discusses how, because she is blind, people often confoundedly treat her as if she was mentally ill or, as the title suggests, invisible. The sad go-to of so many -- it scares or confuses us so we'll just pretend it doesn't exist until it goes away. Broke my heart, the treatment she often gets in this story.I loved the combination of an entertaining mystery AND adventure story blended with some poignant, thought-provoking social commentary. I eagerly anticipate getting into more of Sedgwick's books in the future!**TRIGGER WARNING FOR READERS: This book does briefly discuss suicide in parts of the journal entries.

This is a fine story of and for those with disabilities and those who live with them. It's hard to imagine the strength this young person shows in the face of difficulties.

Interspersed throughout the book are pages from Jack Peak’s ‘black book’ – containing ideas about his next book, mad ramblings about the number 354 and a seeming paranoia about The Hound Of Heaven.Without a doubt, it’s refreshing to read a young adult book with a blind protagonist, but especially Sedgwick’s book because Laureth’s lack of sight is never communicated as a ‘disability’. It’s just who she is and she wouldn’t change it even if she could, but she is frustrated at having to adapt to other people who treat her differently (from begrudging pity to empty sympathy). Laureth is in no way held back by her blindness. In fact, it gives her a far more open perspective of people.‘She Is Not Invisible’ is also a writing triumph for Marcus Sedgwick. Marcus Sedgwick has another winner. Young Adult that pushes the boundaries, She is Not Invisible is definitely a read that all ages would find engaging. Laureth is an amazing character. Precocious beyond her years and amazing by any standards…all that she accomplishes is mind boggling. The kid brother with the unique “super power” who is loyal and supportive to a fault. I loved the setting and the characterizations. The way the main character rationalized, justified and then simply went with whatever came. I loved them both.The plot was a bit thin, but I mostly didn’t mind. It was merely the vehicle used to take Laureth and Benjamin on this amazing ride. I loved all of the little peaks in the father’s notebook and the speculation about coincidences. Quite different in tone and content than my previous Sedgwick read, Midwinterblood, this book nevertheless confirmed for me that Sedgwick deserves a place on my “Authors to Read” shelf. This book is the ultimate YA road trip…but mixed with some mystery, a little thriller, and great philosophical debates…it crosses the divide easily into literary fiction.Note: Review copy rcvd from Publisher, but all thoughts and opinions are my own.

The author suggest that not only are “biases hardwired into us”, but also they are incredibly difficult to evade. We think that we are misled because we are bombarded with misinformation, but this is only part of the story. The way we think, and all our biases, such as “herding bias”, “present bias” are just a few examples of unconscious biases highlighted. The author also points to “available heuristic” and “filter bubbles” that contribute to our misperceptions of reality. Although misperceptions are present throughout history, this book takes it a step further through the impressive scale of the research and drawing on several interesting studies. The author does not leave us in a ‘victim’ state, but provides us with a handy set of points to help us form a more accurate view of the world. I could not put the book down. Highly recommended.

With a great number of data metrics and statistics the author tells a story in his own personal tone: we have bias, we are stubborn, the world is better than before but a long way to fix things, and give the reader some tools to deal with and to dialogue with others. I like that it has a solid argumentation that the bias issue is not new and we are not dealing with a crisis on post truth reality: always we have been there. Balanced because it address up front what’s wrong and the impact of new technologies on making some issues more difficult to solve.

Too much verbal filler. It's the kind of stuff you'd see in a supermarket tabloid. I give it three stars (I'm feeling generous) because I can see why some folk might find it entertaining. If you want actually useful information see "Factfulness: by Hans Rosling. It's an order of magnitude better
