Excellent book with excellent reviews all around. Best Counterpoints book I've read thus far. Much better panel of people to present the views and well presented, defended, and contended. Often Counterpoints books get too wordy and hard to follow for even an above average layman or woman, or they try to be too ecumenically gracious. I found this specific Counterpoints book to be very readable, easy to understand, and a perfect book on the subject. I suppose it may have been better to add a view where Baptism has no place (Salvation Army or Quakers), or a view that is Roman Catholic-esque to be completely fair. However, I am actually glad they didn't. I was looking for traditional Protestant interpretations and was glad to find this book. Perfect read! Well done! I was surprised to learn about the Church of Christ and Lutheran views, Disclaimer: I formerly held to Nettle's view, and believe he has really done wonders with his presentation in this book, I had my reservations though, and now I fall mostly in Pratt's view now, but also with reservations - this book hasn't changed my mind on anything personally, but it is very helpful to understand what other believer's believe about Baptism. Highly recommended!

This is a fine introduction to the competing views of baptism inside Protestanism, though there are indeed further nuanced positions of baptism within the Protestant camp besides the four represented here . See for instance, Kenneth Stephenson's "The Mystery of Baptism in the Anglican Tradition" that describes seven nuanced approaches to baptism inside the Anglican tradition alone.The rebuttals and counterarguments made by the other three theologians were more interesting than the actual presentations themselves unless you are completely new to the baptism debate. However the relatively simple introductions to the respective approaches to baptism might clue you in on how the other side actually thinks. It is highly unlikely that anyone will come away with a changed mind given the nature of the presentations. The Reformed and Lutheran positions, for instance, approach the subject of baptism by relying heavily on the Reformed confessions and the theology of Luther respectively. Those who do not share such presuppositions are unlikely to come away convinced.Nettles's presentation of baptism is fine and does not begin with a confessional basis or a great theologian such as Luther, but the Bible, arguing that baptism is a symbol of Christ's saving work whereby a person who has already come to faith now visibly enters the Christian community. Nettles then details the baptism of John and Jesus and then describes several key instances of conversion and baptism in the Book of Acts arguing that faith in Christ/conversion always precedes baptism. One of the strengths of the Baptist approach is the lack of biblical evidence for children being baptized in the New Testament. That there is no mention of an infant being baptized anywhere in the New Testament and no command to do so should give Paedobaptists pause, yet the question of original sin and its effects on infants is not addressed sufficiently, nor is the theory of the age of accountability discussed. Pratt, offering the Reformed response, points out that Nettles drives a wedge between one's salvation and one's baptism whereas the New Testament, especially St. Paul, seems to speak of them as a unity.Robert Kolb, presenting the Lutheran view, placed great emphasis on the creative Word of God as the basis for baptismal regeneration. Kolb quotes a passage from Luther that states, "Baptism is an eternal covenant which does not lapse ... When Christians fall, they always remain in their baptisms, and God binds himself to them so that He will help them when the baptized call upon Him." This quote is misunderstood by Kolb's detractors giving them the impression that once baptized a person remains in a permananent state of grace. Luther's intent, as Kolb points out, was for baptism to be a daily event of dying to self and rising up to a new life in Christ. Interestingly Kolb does not emphasize the urgency of infant baptism given the gravity of original sin. In this respect the Lutheran position is deeply indebted to Augustine of Hippo. Moreover the strength of the Lutheran position is that it ties baptism to the promises of the Word of God and thereby grants the believer the assurance that God is faithful regardless of one's feelings and inadequacies. In this regard Lutheranism is a fundamentally objective religion that places great emphasis on the sacraments since Luther himself suffered so greatly from the uncertainty of his own salvation.The Reformed position presented by Richard Pratt is helpful. Like the Lutheran position the Reformed is also indebted to Augustine of Hippo as Pratt quotes the Westminster Confession of Faith emphasizing that baptism for the Reformed is both covenantal and sacramental. What does sacramental mean?"There is, in every sacrament, a spiritual relation, or sacramental union, between the sign and the thing signified: whence it comes to pass, that the names and effects of the one are attributed to the other."What does all of that mean? The "sign" is the water and the "thing signified" is the actual regeneration/renewal of the individual by the Holy Spirit. In Reformed theology, however, regeneration does not necessarily take place at the moment of baptism. The Spirit is free to move and renew the individual at His sovereign discretion, often years after the moment of the actual baptism. The Spirit is not bound to the water as it is for Lutherans, for the Reformed emphasize the sovereignty of God and the divine prerogative to operate apart from the two Gospel sacraments and even the preaching and hearing of the Word. The strength of this position is that it eliminates any mechanical or magical certainty that the Lutheran or Roman Catholic view might grant baptism. The weakness, from a Lutheran perspective, is that the recipient remains uncertain if baptism and the Lord's Supper actually accomplish anything at all. In this sense the Reformed position, though indebted to Augustine, has not been faithful to him, for Augustine held that infants were indeed made regenerate in baptism by virtue of the "sign" (the water) and the "thing signified" (the renewing of the Holy Spirit)coming together at the moment of baptism. The Reformed position, while embracing Augustine's distinction of "sign" and the "thing signified" inadvertently drives a wedge between the two by making predestination and the sovereignty of God, rather than the promises of God, the central operating principle of its theology.John Castelein, presenting the Churches of Christ position, argues baptism is the biblical occasion of salvation. Castelein is a believers' baptist who opposes infant baptism while protesting that his church's position has been wrongly described as baptismal regeneration. Castelein makes a threefold distinction whereby divine grace is the ground for salvation; human faith is the agency of salvation; baptism is the occasion of salvation. Nettles, offering the Baptist response, points out that as Castelein seeks to harmonize the theologies of James and Paul negates the Protestant doctrine of salvation by faith alone (see page 132) thus preferring James to Paul where there should be no question of disunity to begin with. Castelein's position becomes something of a "tertia quid" since it is neither truly Protestant, as are the other three positions, nor Catholic.Overall a fine resource to have in one book. It will not change your mind, but it will provide you with a more informed perspective of much contested issue.

If you want to learn the various views on Baptism in the Protestant/Evangelical world, then this book is for you! Each view was presented in a single chapter by an author who supported that particular side. This chapter was followed by a series of three short counter-chapters by the other authors. After reading these attempted refutations one would read a chapter on the next view.I found most of the views written with clarity. The authors knew how to present their positions well. The Lutheran View seemed to have the weakest presentation. I fault the author defending that position more than the position itself as other positions picked up on elements of that position and presented them better when making their own cases. The author's refutations of others positions also lost focus at times and drifted into refuting a previous presentation or presenting their own positions some more. I was disappointed the Roman Catholic/Orthodox View was not included in this discussion. But with that being said, I know the Lutheran View shares many similarities with it.Overall, this book was well-written and gave a stellar presentation for each side (Lutheran excepted). The refutations proved to be excellent half of the time, but drifted in focus at other times. Nevertheless, one read enough to see the weaknesses in all of the positions. A good book to dive deeper on this topic!

The author does a very admirable job of laying out the four views and the arguments for and against the different ideas and modes of baptism. As one who holds to one main view of baptism, the author brings each mode to the forefront and gives good space and logic and SCRIPTURE to understand each point.

Being part of the Restoration tradition, I found this book to be helpful in better understanding the positions and reasoning of the differing views on baptism. While my own views on baptism have not really changed after reading, I was glad to read a discussion on this subject that was both friendly in tone, and still honest about the areas of disagreement.There were a few places where I felt contributors were splitting semantic hairs. In some places, I found myself wondering what exactly two of the contributors disagreed on. (The Lutheran rebuttal to the Reformed essay is probably the biggest example of this). Overall though, this was an excellent read, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a fair and balanced presentation of the subject.

I use many of them in my practice as a major tool for writing notes, treatment plans and giving my clients homework assignments. I highly recommend any counselor, SW or anyone in the helping field who has just started out in there field to use these books as a great tool to start with comprising resource material.

My 12 year old thought this was a babies book judging it by its cover... a great teaching moment was presented and turns out he LOVES it !!! He is totally into scratch now! He would rather do this than play video games!

I have 9 year old triplet boys who are already computer literate. One of them read this book first, wrote an awesome little game kind-of like the old 'Kaboom!' On the Atari 2600, then taught his brothers and two neighborhood kids how to code in scratch. The book has gotten some mileage on it.

Super easy introduction to Scratch. We opened the book and started programming right away. I think I could also give my kids the book and allow them to use it independently as well. Would recommend as an intro book for Scratch programming. Directions are clear and concise. Teaches a few programming "vocabulary" words such as: What are variables, loops, if-then statements, scripts, operators, etc.This book includes four programs to write: Fishball, Ghost Hunt, Rapid Reaction, and Melon BounceAll of these are simple games.At the end of each program there is a "Show you know" section - a quiz for kids to review what they have learned. The solutions are found in the back of the book.What I like about this is that Scratch is pretty easy to learn. So once my kids got the fundamentals down, they "played" on Scratch for a while. I'd much rather my kids "play" with programming and learn something in the process, wouldn't you? Yeah.

My 8 year-old loves this book. Super Scratch Programming Adventure didn't hold his attention a couple years ago, but he's gotten completely hooked by this book. It's very easy to understand and the programs are a good balance between easy to understand and complex enough to be interesting. In fact, my 5 year-old (who wants to be like her brother) is able to copy much of the programs herself. She doesn't fully understand what everything means, but she's thinking about it and getting great exposure.

I didn't get much of a chance to look at this before my students (middle schoolers) took it from me. At first glance, I thought it was a little light on content, but they passed it around their coding group and I haven't seen it since. I guess that makes it a win, especially when you consider the price!

This is a nice little book, I wish it had more pages, I wanted to get a beginner book for my 10 year old who is interested in video game design. This was way too easy for him and he finished it in a week. It would have been less than a week had I allowed him to work on it more often. This was super easy for him, so this is definitely for younger kids. I just bought him the next book that hopefully has more projects that are more complicated. But this is a good beginner book for younger kids!

Excellent book. Younger kids may still need some handholding while using this book, but it is very simple and the games are really fun once you finish creating them. Even I learned scratch pretty well after following this book to work with my 8 year old. We are now creating our own games!

This was a great starter book to use. It was very short (my 8 year old did all projects within a few hours), but it was also a good "test" book to see if my child was going to be interested. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a Scratch workbook just to find out my child was no longer interested. Overall, the projects in this book were easy to complete and kept my child interested. Good buy for the price

I enjoy reading Garden and Gun magazine at the doctor's office (hehe). And on a recent trip to Memphis and Birmingham, I used their restaurant reviews and stories for visit ideas. So when I noticed that they published a cookbook WITH ESSAYS in October 2015, I snatched one up.The inside back and front covers contain an illustration of The Southern States, from Texas to the Mason-Dixon Line, dotted with a variety of foodstuffs, like beef, fish, seafood, peanuts, chilis, and bourbon. The book contains essays by Roy Blount, Jr, Rick Bragg, Matt Lee, Ted, Lee, and others. The book opens with recipes and ideas for Party Bite & Appetizers. This secton includes THREE - no four - pimento cheeses; delta style hot tamales; bourbon balls; West Indies salad; Benedictine, pickapeppa pecans, devilISH eggs, lots of shrimp and crab items and more.Section 2 is devoted to Chicken, and includes an essay by Julia Reed, three styles of Fried Chicken, King Ranch Chicken; a Chicken Bog (like a Toad in the Hole), Spicy-Pickle Chicken Salad with Chicken Skin Crackers, and Chicken Thigh Potpie. Section Three is focuses "Pork, Beef, and Lamb"... and actually so many of the recipes include Hog products sprinkled throughout the book. Section Three includes recipes for hams, hogs, pork chops, bacons, and a Cane Syrup & Spice-Rubbed Beef Tenderloin. These are from Belton, SC's Grits and Groceries.Section Eight's Condiments' recipes includes those for five (5) BBQ sauces: from Memphis, Texas, Eastern NC, SC, and Alabama; Comeback Sauce; a Creole Remoulade; Peanut Butter; Pesto; Mostarda; Chunky Sweet Onion Jezebel Sauce; and more. The last section on Cocktails has recipes for nearly a dozen.Devilish Eggs are based on TN raised Chef Trevor Higgins (now Greenville, SC) recipe. It uses Sriracha, white wine vinegar, and grainy mustard (and bacon grease). It includes a tip on how to shell an egg the best way. We learn that West Indies Salad is actually from Birmingham Alabama and is based on crabmeat, The Extra Crispy version of Fried Chicken gives a nod to the Korean communities that dot the South and use rice flour or cornstarch and brine the chickens first. The Meat and Three pays homage to Southern steam tables (one meat and three sides). It elevates the burger by adding sirloin and a richer ground chuck, and adding red wine to the Vidalia onion gravy. The fried pickle recipe is from Bernell "Fatman" Austin. You can find none better. The Pool Room Slaw is like chowchow and cole slaw. It's a tad bit Northern Alabama, and a little bit Middle Tennessee. It is not creamy mayo style. The rustic Appalachian Applejack Stack Cake (like a huge stack of pancakes) was originally a communal project with each home making a stack and bringing it for inclusion. Here we learn to make it the non communal way. Most importantly, the editors teach that you should not slice an okra. You get to avoid the mucilage this way. And just fry them whole.

Here is the deal, I married into an incredibly large Southern family. Southerners love get-togethers they love cooking and they believe that cooking heals the soul, I could not agree more. When I got this book I was so thoroughly excited to see all of the recipes that my husband' s family makes... and to be completely honest... there are so many elements missing from this cookbook! I was pretty disappointed, this cookbook just went on a shelf where it will collect dust. When something as simplistic as classic collard greens, red beans and rice..which is an absolute Southern staple at any table is missing....it doesn't seem like a REAL southern cook book. Things like classic cornbread, grits, fried fish, greens smoked ham hocks, corn bread dressing, southern sweet cabbage, things like that are not here.... no thanks...

This is just an awesome cookbook from cover to cover! The stories are as beautiful as the pictures. While the essays are great and the recipes are spot on, I am also very appreciative of the fact that this cookbook educates the reader as well. I know what part of the pig the hamhock comes from now?!! Laugh if you will, but it's true this cookbook taught me that.If you're a southerner like myself, then you will feel right at home. If you're not, then this cookbook poses as a great opportunity to get yourself acquainted with the south and the delicious cuisine it has to offer.

I am not from the South. I live in Southern California, but my boyfriend is from the South and he will be living in California much to his dismay. To brighten up his spirits I bought this cookbook to "Cook our way to the South". The directions are helpful and concise, and the pictures are great too. I like how they tell a little story of where the dish came from. You need real pots and pans for these recipes folks! It would have been nice to see a picture of every recipe in the book. I suppose that's what google is for. Just buy it, you won't regret it .

My mom is from Louisiana, my dad from Texas, and I'm a proud Georgia Peach. I know what good southern food tastes like. I've made about half a dozen of these recipes so far and I haven't been disappointed yet. Everything has been absolutely delicious. When I eat this food, I'm transported back to the Sundays of my childhood when my parents would treat us BBQ on the back porch or a meat 'n three style dinner at the local diner.Now in a different city, I've been hunting high and low for some good fried chicken only to constantly be disappointed. I made this book's recipe and WOW, I couldn't believe my first attempt would come out that good. Everyone at the table was salivating and I ran out of pieces too quickly. People were grabbing a 4th or 5th piece because it was too good to stop.If you want to cook authentic southern food, this is the cookbook for you. The recipes are so classic that I know I'll be pulling out this book on Sundays for my kids for decades to come.

as a subscriber to the magazine for a long time, and reading about the dishes in many of the issues, it was a treat to purchase the cookbook which is filled with great stuff. if you like southern cooking and are adventurous this is the book for you. everything from start to finish including many favorites like pimento cheese and shrimp and grits. worth the price for sure

This book introduces you to diverse topics in electronics. It starts with basic circuit fundamentals, circuit analysis, analog electronics, and goes all the way to digital electronics. I particularly like the section on "Semiconductor Diodes and Transistor," including BJT and MOSFET.

The book is laid out in a in an incoherent manner consistently assuming you have already read things in following chapters.It is also riddled with a few hundred errors through-out, you can look up errata for this book on google for verification.I highly recommend avoiding this book.

I will use this book for my classes.

This is one of the worst textbooks I have ever encountered. Explanations are verbose and unclear. Errors abound. Stay away from this travesty.

I have a BS in EE, pursuing a teaching degree in Physics. This text is being used for a Physics undergrad course in Electronics. It has several typographical errors in both the text and end of chapter problems in the first two chapters. In addition, the explanations are dense and unhelpful, and the derivations skip steps without explanation. This text should not be used; there must be several better written texts, even if you need to delve into those meant strictly for Electrical Engineering coursework.

Had Martin Plonus spent more time proofing his text he would not have wasted so much of mine. My class found errors in the abbreviated derivations, examples, homework problems, and even one conceptual error. This book has far too many errors to be of much quantitative use. I would wait for a corrected edition to become available or simply use another text.

This book was written to help the reader attain a broad-based understanding of modern electronics and communications devices, however it needs to have a base knowledge to understand this book, I seen other reviews on the book claiming errors and so, ... all I can say is " go back and learn the basics".

About the Author

Roz Chast grew up in Brooklyn. Her cartoons began appearing in the New Yorker in 1978. Since then, she has published more than one thousand cartoons in the magazine. She has written and illustrated many books, including the national bestseller Going into Town, What I Hate: From A to Z, and the collections of her own cartoons The Party After You Left and Theories of Everything. She is the editor of The Best American Comics 2016 and the illustrator of Calvin Trillin's No Fair! No Fair! and Daniel Menaker's The African Svelte, all published in Fall 2016. She was awarded the Harvey Award Hall of Fame Award.

As someone who is dealing with an aged mother (97) and presumably rapidly moving into old age himself, I found this book poignant, funny, sad, moving, realistic, depressing and thoroughly enjoyable. I totally loved it (even when it was sad) and cannot recommend it highly enough. But who knew that Ms. Chast and I had the same parents?

* As I write this, my 83-year-old dad is withering away in an assisted living facility, riddled with Alzheimer's. Sometimes I want my Dad to die now - because he's unaware of his suffering - and he'd cuss me out if he knew he is turning into what Roz Chast's mother describes as "a pulsating piece of protoplasm." I feel guilty feeling this way - but "Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant?" makes such forbidden thoughts feel normal.* (BTW, don't buy the Kindle version. This title, with its colorful cartoons and photos - as well as its handsome construction as a hardcover book - truly belongs on your coffee table. I sampled the Kindle version, didn't like it, and bought the hardcover.)* This book feels weirdly clairvoyant. It exposed my doubts, fears and paradoxical feelings about watching my parents die slowly before my eyes. I've read almost everything about the subject of aging and dying. And yet this is the first book that captures the exhausting experience of caring for aging parents, e.g., that it's sometimes gross - (see passages about hoarding, incontinence and "grime") - AND funny - (see "The Wheel of Doom" and Roz Chast's father's obsession with myriad bank books, decades old).* The author's hand-wringing about whether there's going to be enough money to pay for her parents' care is spot on. How long will the money last if they live "X" more years vs. "Y" more years? I do these calculations every month, constantly updating and trying to prepare for the worst. Any savings will be drained by expenses which will have no effect on terminal outcomes. If the daily care and feeding of your parents doesn't kill you - then the avalanche of paperwork and legal stuff that must be done - will.* Hence despite the preference to "talk about something more pleasant," if nothing else, this book demonstrates why planning for our parents' end-of-life care must begin NOW - not later.* I recommend this book for every person who's on the brink of going insane about their aging parents. Give it to caregivers, give it to your siblings, give it to anyone who hates dark subjects - but who can handle them if they're presented in a disarmingly funny style that's accessible - yet still honest. (I don't think I can read another "text-only" book about the "death spiral" of aging parents.)* In sum, "Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant?" takes the hard edges off some things while inflicting blunt-force traumas about others. Roz Chast nails the impending death of our parents in a way that feels like a landmark work. I know such praise sounds silly given the sea of excellent books out there about aging. But I've never seen this subject presented in an original, humorous and touching way, complete with hand-drawn illustrations and color photos. It avoids the trap of being overly optimistic, forcing us to confront the gruesomeness of mortality - while STILL providing an emotional "lift" about something universal.* This book makes going through one of the darkest periods of my life - feel almost worth it.

There is a saying in the Navy: "any ship can be a minesweeper...once." For those of us not in the medical or elder care professions, dealing with our parents' decline and death is an emotional roller coaster; a harrowing experience. One can't be fully prepared for the emotional, physical and financial challenges. People are living longer, many families are smaller and through jobs and choice we are not always living in the same community with our parents. Chast is very honest about not having lived an idyllic childhood and her parents weren't the best (or worst) role models. Most of us try to do the right things for our parents when we become responsible for their care, and I suspect most of us aren't candidates for sainthood.She crafts a caring and candid portrait of two flawed but colorful people who stood together for nearly 70 years in a rock solid marriage. She is also remarkably honest about her own conflicting emotions.Her parents foibles and phobias, hoarding and occasional irrationality clearly drove their daughter to distraction. Still, they lived well into their 90s on their own terms. The sadness of their ultimate physical and mental decline is only partially absolved by their daughter's fulfilling her duty of care and the hard won insights as she comes to terms with and assists them in their final journey..For those of us who have been through this passage, it is a tale well told. For those who have not, buckle up.

This memoir is so honest (brutally so at times I suppose)and so well told with terrific humor, that I must say if you have an aging parent(s)that you are caring for, concerned about, worry about, wonder about or if you recently lost an elderly parent(s)who you took care of, this book let's you know you aren't alone while allowing you a moment or two to laugh (even through tears). Roz Chast expresses feelings that I think many people (certainly I) have felt during this journey - we simply don't voice them and occasionally feel guilty for having the thoughts. It is good to know that the frustration and other feelings you have at times while dealing with a parent (especially one with dementia) is shared. For me, this book was like having drinks with a good friend. I believe, in the end, Roz showed her deep loving connection in her own perfect way via this book. I think it was expressed in a way her mother would have understood even if a few other reviewers didn't.
