Very Good WW2 history book. The writer did not seen to like Mac Arthur but is still good to read. The campaigns are cover very well.The Author seem to forget that MacArthur like F. D. Roosevelt gave us hope when there was none with the Japanese kicking our butt then.

Nathan Prefer's book on General Douglas MacArthur's "hopping" campaigns in Western New Guinea in 1944 is a well-crafted and detailed account of the twin difficulties encountered by U.S. Army combat units in carrying out MacArthur's strategic directives: The appalling New Guinea jungle terrain and the highly audacious tactics and tenacity of the Imperial Japanese Army. I found Prefer's portraits of MacArthur and one of his subordinates, Lieutenant General Robert Eichelberger, very revealing. Prefer details MacArthur's penchant for regularly issuing communiques announcing the successful completion of battles while they were still being hotly contested. MacArthur is also portrayed as being largely indifferent to the physical hardships endured by U.S. Army infantrymen in New Guinea (MacArthur never visited the front lines in order to gain a feel for the combat conditions and only visited secured battlefields and islands once the fighting was "officially" over). MacArthur's subordinate, Eichelberger, is portrayed by Prefer as the consummate general - a tough, no-nonsense officer who regularly visited the front lines and also kept his soldiers' ("my lads," as Eichelberger called them) best interests at heart. Nathan Prefer also reveals that MacArthur's treatment of the Australian Army soldiers under his command was no better, despite the fact that at the outset of the New Guinea campaign in 1942 it was Australian Army militia and regular Australian Army soldiers who fought the Imperial Japanese Army on New Guinea's Kokoda Trail and eventually pushed them back over the Owen Stanley mountain range, thereby saving New Guinea and allowing MacArthur to begin his "hopping" campaigns in Western New Guinea. MacArthur's New Guinea campaign was as bloody as any campaign in the Pacific - despite MacArthur's claim that he was economical with his soldiers' lives. Prefer's excellent work pays a long-overdue tribute to the valor, courage and tenacity of the U.S. Army officers and men under MacArthur's command who fought in, and won, the New Guinea campaign.

Is the designated impurity of menstruation sexist? Or does ritual absence from sex during menstruation encourage a rhythmic reaffirmation of conjugal intimacy?This book offers a new perspective on the extensive rabbinic discussions of menstrual impurity, female physiology, and anatomy, and on the social and religious institutions those discussions engendered. It analyzes the functions of these discussions within the larger textual world of rabbinic literature and in the context of Jewish and Christian culture in late antiquity.How did gender work—how was it made to work—in rabbinic literature? How did that literature dictate the place of women in Jewish culture? In search of answers to these questions, the author analyzes the architectural metaphors deployed to describe female anatomy, arguing that this discursive construction operated culturally to associate women with the home and exclude them from rabbinic study halls.The author shows that rabbinic discourse is not completely controlled by rabbinic ideology, however. She analyzes talmudic discussions that allow alternative gender perspectives to emerge, indicating that women and their bodies were not completely objectified. This suggests that the Babylonian Talmud does not present a completely homogeneous gender structure, but contains a number of different, sometimes contradictory, possibilities.The book concludes with a study of early Christian texts that relate to the same biblical laws on menstrual impurity as rabbinic texts, focusing in particular on a Jewish-Christian text in which the anonymous author polemicizes against Jewish women converts who remain attached to the biblical laws. An excellent Physics book written in 1964 by one of the Nobel Laureate originators of the BCS theory, but by now out of date history.

John Schieffer's book was written for solid state physicists with more than just a casual interest in superconductivity. The discussion of Cooper pairs, the foundation for BCS theory, though not difficult to read, is easier to understand after going through Gordon Baym's discussion of this topic in Lectures On Quantum Mechanics (Lecture Notes and Supplements in Physics). Much of this book is at a much higher level and only understandable to those with a solid grounding in quantum field theory.Although somewhat cryptic in places, many important details are included in this book--especially those that relate to BCS theory. I found a useful nugget of information in a reference to P.W. Anderson's concept of pseudo-spin in superconductivity. The commutation relations for pseudo-spin are given on p.38, equations 2-21a, b, and c. Schrieffer's reference #47 (p.270) directs the reader to Anderson's papers that address this topic [Phys. Rev. 110,827(1958); 112,1900,(1958)] and give explicit expressions for the equivalent Pauli spin operators. Also of special interest are the Feynman diagram and accompanying Green's function for the electron-phonon interaction (pp.126-136).It is certainly valuable to have this record of Schrieffer's thoughts. I once had the opportunity to hear Schrieffer give an invited talk at a conference. He began with an amusing story of his early days as a graduate student at University of Illinois. One of his first tasks was to evaporate a film in a bell jar. Somehow this operation resulted in a small conflagration that burned off the hair on Schrieffer's eyebrows and forehead. After his Ph.D. adviser John Bardeen learned of the unfortunate consequences of this experiment, Bardeen said to Schrieffer "maybe you should try doing theory."There is a story told by a University of Illinois physics professor that also pointed to theory as a likely career for the young John Schrieffer. The professor was active in high-energy particle physics and taught the course on that topic which was mandatory for all first year physics graduate students. The professor was in the habit of structuring his exams such that it consisted of three standard problems, as well as an additional extra credit problem. The extra credit problem usually addressed an aspect of the professor's research in theoretical particle physics--and posed a question for which the professor had not yet found an answer! On the day of the exam the professor was surprised to find that Schrieffer breezed through the exam in only fifteen minutes when a full hour was allotted for jotting down one's answers in the standard text booklet. Upon going through Schrieffer's booklet, the professor was shocked to discover that not only did this remarkable student correctly answer the three standard questions in record time, he also gave a correct solution to the research problem that had been frustrating the professor for several years! The professor confessed to students attending his class twenty years later in the mid 1970's that he had felt pretty stupid to be bested by a neophyte graduate student in this way--but was later quite relieved when he heard that Schrieffer's graduate work earned him a Nobel Prize!

Schrieffers's book is valuable not only to study the theory of the superconductivity in the field theoretic language, but also to learn the normal Fermi liquid state by using Green's functions. Actually the chapter on the introduction to Green's function is really good, and a very concise discussion on RPA results and plasmon theory are given there. While bit dated, this text is still recommneded for every condensed matter students.Three nobel recutures by each of "BCS" are also given at the end of the book.

Although the material in the book is a little bit old, I still think it's a good text book if you are the beginner in learning superconductivity. Pretty awesome!!

This is a great series for children in the US at about 12 and up. It is a detective story that goes over lots of different types of cases their is nothing to graphic in it, well compared to the news, or some US kids tv shows. I highly recommend reading it with your kids and seeing as the author did as well try to solve the case before Conan/Jimmy can. If you do not have any kids it is still worth the read, it can be a bit childish at times. But if you still watch Gundum, SpongeBob, or well any thing on Cartoon Network then you will still enjoy this. Or if you just like well written detective stories this is a good one. Their are some mistakes here and their but nothing story ruining.

Glad this series is finally on Kindle. I'm a huge fan of case closed. I was really sad when this series stop being dubbed. But I could continue reading it at least and hopefully one day they'll pick it up again. If you like Mysteries definitely pick this up.

In this book, Rachel and Sabrina go to a magic lover's retreat in the mountains. It's all fun and games until the only bridge to the cabin is burned and a dead body shows up. Thankfully, Conan, along with another mysterious guest, is there to help solve this case. This book also contains a story in which it looks like a suicide but Conan suspects foul play. Conan has to try to find proof that this woman was indeed murdered. Overall a fun read that I recommend to any Case Closed/Detective Conan fans.

In this book, you get a glimpse at Jimmy's first case in which he helps to solve a murder on an air plane mid flight. I enjoyed seeing Inspector McGuire's reaction to Jimmy helping to solve the case, too, as it made me laugh. This book also includes one of the metropolitan police love stories. I always enjoy seeing Detective Takagi and Inspector Santos try to impress Detective Sato. Always, fun! Overall, a fun book to read. If you like case closed, I recommend this book.

Gosho Aoyama never disappoints. this one is mostly filled with fillers but as long as he keeps coming up with refreshing cases i'm here for it!!. Can't wait to read VOl. 66

If you love the Case Closed/ Detective Conan series, this is a great book to get. In this book, the audience is introduced to the new character, Anita Hailey/ Ai Hibara. Seems she has ties to the Black Organization and knows that Conan is really Jimmy. She is a very intriguing character so this is definitely a book I recommend. This book also contains a story where we find out about Jimmy's first love, which is a fun read.

I received the book. Which I really wanted. I saw great reviews on Amazon and knew book was coming in used condition. Which I am fine with that I have bought a lot of books through thrift stores before. When I opened the book it had roach droppings inside and dirt all over cover. You think the seller would have least shook the book or cleaned it a little. Kinda of disappointmented. I wiped it off and sprayed with Lysol.

Excellent book, great tips, written very well indeed . . profound bits of wisdom through-out. Thoroughly enjoyed the Mrs. Dunwoody's persona and the concept of writing as though the author was truly from the late 1800s.

This is the best modern housekeeping book available on the market. It has witty commentary sprinkled throughout, fairly wholesome poetry and quotes decorating the pages, and most importantly calls back to archaic housekeeping routines and updates them for a modern period. This has good guidelines to write in the pages and expand on Mrs. Dunwoody’s advice so you can pass this book onto your children. Excellent housewarming gift for one woman to give to another.

This book is so cute! I really like it. I was secretly hoping Mrs. Dunwoody was a real person and this book was a real “old book” but regardless, I still think its great!!! The used books came in fine condition.

I waited a very long time for Amazon to get this book back into stock. This book is perfect for anyone wanting to learn how to keep a home and needing some old fashioned advice. Chapter titles are: The Art of Home keeping, The Cares of House and Home, Miss Sallie Anne's Splendid Directions for Laundry, Notes and Recipes from the Kitchen, The Art of Entertaining, Matters of Formality, Health and Beauty, Marriage and Family, The Garden, and Fill-In Pages-A Treasury of Memories.My favorite part is the family tree pages in the back, just like old family bibles had back in the day.

Well written, engaging book. If I could sit and talk with my grandmother today, I am sure her advice would be the same as given here. Timeless tips for home, taking care of others, and most importantly taking care of yourself. Reading home making books is a hobby of mine, this is my favorite. Make a cup of tea and enjoy!
