“Narconomics” is about how drug cartels are taking pages from the playbooks of big businesses like Walmart and Coca-cola. In cases like diversifying into new markets or deciding to collude with a competitor, this might not seem surprising. However, it may come as a shock to find out about the franchising and CSR (corporate social responsibility) practices of drug cartels. Other than being outside access to the justice system, and thus resorting to violence to achieve what contracts, mediators, and courts would do for other businesses, the drug business it turns out is very much a business.Along the way a secondary story emerges that is just as interesting and even more important. It’s the story of how the drug war makes no sense from the standpoint of economic logic. Destroying fields in South America only makes for poorer farmers because their monopsonistic (i.e. single buyer) market pushes the cost of lost crops back onto them. And because raw product is such a tiny portion of retail price, their destruction has almost no effect on prices at the user end. Furthermore, as more US and European states legalize marijuana, it seems that this will have more of an effect at putting cartels out of business and ending their reign of violence than all the arms shipments and foreign aid for drug enforcement ever had.The book consists of ten chapters, each of which addresses an area of business practices that have been taken up by the drug cartels. Chapter one is about supply chains, and in the case of cocaine there is a rather long one. The raw product is grown in South America and must be infiltrated into the US—usually through Mexico. (For a while there was a prominent Caribbean route, but it was shut down—at least for a while.) This is where we learn about how the cartels adapt to eradicated crops, as well as how the product is marked up at various stages of the operation.Chapter 2 is about the decision to compete versus collude. We mostly read about the competition, because in a lawless market competition equals violence. However, over time cartels have been increasingly willing to agree on distribution of territory. Although, there are also clever means to compete unique to criminal enterprises, such as engaging in violence in someone else’s territory to cause the police to crack down there—thus making it harder for said opposition.Chapter 3 is about human resources, and the different approaches used to handle problems in this domain. In the movies, an drug cartel employee who fouled up always gets a bullet to the brain, but it seems that this isn’t always the case—though it certainly happens. Different countries and regions have differing labor mobility. In some cases, there is no labor mobility. (i.e. if one has a gang’s symbols tattooed all over one’s body, one can’t interview with a rival gang and Aetna sure as hell isn’t going to hire you.)Chapter 4 is about public relations and giving to the public. One doesn’t think about drug lords engaging in CSR, but in some cases they may be more consistent with it than mainstream businesses. The cartels face an ongoing risk of people informing on them, and at least some of those people can do so without their identities becoming known. Violence is often used to solve problems in this domain, but it can’t do it all. That’s why drug lords build churches and schools, and often become beloved in the process.Chapter 5 explores “offshoring” in the drug world. This may seem strange, but drug cartels, too, chase low-cost labor. But it’s not just about lowering costs, it’s also about finding a suitable regulatory environment—which in the cartel’s case means a slack one. An interesting point is made that all the statistics on doing business are still relevant to the drug business, but often in reverse. That is, if Toyota is putting in a plant, it wants a place with low corruption, but if the Sinaloa want to put in a facility--the easier the bribery the better.Chapter 6 describes how franchising has come to be applied to drug cartels—famously the Zetas. The franchisor provides such goods as better weaponry in exchange for a cut of profits. Of course, there’s always a difference in incentives between franchisors and franchisees when it comes to delimiting territory, and this doesn’t always work out as well for drug dealers as it does for McDonald’s franchisees.While the bulk of the book focuses on cocaine and marijuana, Chapter 7 is different in that most of it deals with the wave of synthetic drugs that has popped up. The topic is innovating around regulation, and so it’s certainly apropos to look at these drugs. If you’re not familiar, there are many synthetic drugs that are usually sold as potpourri or the like. Once they’re outlawed, the formula is tweaked a little. In a way, these “legal highs” may be the most dangerous because no one knows what effect they’ll have when they put the out on the street.In chapter 8 we learn that the drug world hasn’t missed the online retail phenomena. Using special web browsers, individuals are able to make transactions that are not so difficult to trace. In an intriguing twist, the online market may foster more trust and higher quality product than the conventional street corner seller ever did.Chapter 9 examines how drug traffickers diversify—most notably into human trafficking. Exploiting their knowledge of how to get things across the border, they become “coyotes.”The last chapter investigates the effect of legalization, and it focuses heavily upon the effects that Denver’s legalizing marijuana has had in Denver, in the rest of the country, and on the cartels. Wainwright paints a balanced picture that shows that not everything is perfect with legalization. E.g. he presents a couple cases of people who ingested pot-laced food products intended for several servings, and did crazy stuff. However, the bottom line is that legalization (and the regulation and taxation that comes with it) seems to be the way to go if you want to really hurt the cartels and stem the tide of violence, as well as to reduce the number of people showing up at the ER having ingested some substance of unknown chemical composition.There is an extensive conclusion, about the length of one of the chapters that delves into the many ways our approach to eliminating drug use is ill-advised and dangerous. This connects together a number of the key points made throughout the chapter.I found this book fascinating. Wainwright does some excellent investigative reporting—at no minor risk to life and limb. If you’re interested in issues of business and economics, you’ll love this book. If you’re not into business and economics, you’ll find this book to be an intriguing and palatable way to take on those subjects.

I am a conservative dentist, with conservative social views and conservative prescribing practices, who once thought I knew most everything about drug lords, drug addicts, and addictive substances. Then, in October 2014 we found our 24 year old son, dead in our bathroom with a syringe in his hand. I have spent the past 16 months in grief, depression, and wanting to deal with drug dealers in the most violent, painful means imaginable but with no means, plan, or intel to carry this out. The local police have basically have shown zero interest in his case, since they ruled us out as suspects. This book has made me realize that our nation's (world's) drug problem is an economic problem and needs to be addressed in those terms. This extremely well written and researched book gives me a set of arguments to present to our state representatives. An excellent and less emotional review can be read above by Loyd Eskildson

This is a fact based, rational examination of how drug cartels operate and by implication, why they continue to thrive. Although the author speaks in terms of the economics of a drug based business, one is logically lead to the inescapable conclusion that our past and current efforts to eradicate the drug trade are woefully misguided. This book is an enlightening and eye-opening dissection of narco economics. If you've ever wondered why the "War on Drugs" has been lost, you'll find a very entertaining and logical answers in the reading of this book.

This fellow writes like a freshman economics student at one of the ubiquitous socialism -infested junior colleges. He is so proud of having mastered a few economic concepts that his hubris completely prevents him from recognizing the mental gymnastics he must perform in order to reach his utopian solutions. I read about a quarter of the book before I had to put it down due to nausea inspired by his preachy, arrogant and juvenile attitude. If this guy ever grows up and has to deal with a few real world issues, he might write a book worth reading. I regret the time l spent giving this one too many chances.

I think the title of the book is misleading. From a journalist, with this title, I expected country recipes from the countryside of Poland, not citified recipes from the cosmopolitan wife of Poland's foreign minister. It could have used a better editor as well. Every other page has the word "elegant" on it. Two things, it means no real recipe editor read them, and I fear for the accuracy of the measurements; second, there is nothing country about what these ladies think is elegant. It walks, talks and quacks like tame Eurotrash food trying way too hard to be liked. Where the word "elegant" was absent, the word "beets" prevailed. I know Poles eat more than beets. Sadly disappointed.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and could hardly put it down. As other reviewers have pointed out, the book systematically goes through how the Soviet Union and their proxy governments crushed Eastern Europe into submission. It methodically covers oppression of political parties, religious organization, youth organizations ... every possible grouping of people that could threaten their rule. If you're not interested in the "crushing" part of the title, I would steer clear. Keep in mind that there is considerable focus placed on East Germany, Poland and Hungary, although the author does provide details from other countries in the region during the larger discussions around the three countries mentioned.My absolute favorite sections of the book though are the discussions regarding how the authorities tried to move the population along the desired ideological lines. The working class didn't always want or support what the governments felt they should want and in the three countries represented they were pushed in similar and different ways.The book really and truly read as if it was the story of how an Iron Curtain was brought down around Eastern Europe. I came out of it with a strong impression of how it was accomplished, the key players and where they came from. The number of parallels that can be made the current events are also rather amazing and I feel the book can provide a much needed different outlook on many of the events of today and the future.Highly recommended.

Using extensive material newly available since the end of the Warsaw Pact, the author asserts a new model of the coming of the Cold War to Eastern Europe and the rise of the high Stalinist state type. Western histories tend to treat the war as a separate entity from the Cold War. The Allies beat Hitler. The West falls out with Stalin. Stalin creates what become the satellite states of the east. This book asserts that from the Soviet side it was a seamless process, with the core elements of a slavish Stalinist party and an extra-constitutional security police arriving with the Soviet military. Ms. Applebaum, a journalist who covered the region as well as a Pulitzer Prize winning author, sees the core of the Stalinist apparatus [a party apparatus totally under Moscow's control, a security police run by this party outside legal norms and with direct KGB control and both party and police firmly joined to the Soviet occupation authority via crossposting of Soviet military and police officers] as a direct Soviet template with only minor variations from local conditions. She shows the constitutional fan dances and elections as the smoke screen they were. Stalin was determined to have friendly regimes. In Stalinist logic all those not creatures of the SU were objectively fascist. Therefore Western pushes for democracy and sovereignty were simply outside the mental horizons of both the rulers in the Kremlin and the Soviet minions on the ground. The three test cases offered are Poland, Hungary and East Germany. Regrettably she has simplified the German situation considerably but the treatment remains valuable. Recommended for those interested in the end of WW2 and the first phases of the de facto World War 3 in Europe.

In this book, Anne Applebaum presents overwhelming evidence that the Soviet takeover of Eastern Europe after WW2 was just that -- a carefully planned and brutally executed Soviet program. This isn't exactly new news. But she presents the story in a new way, framing it in the institutions of totalitarianism, and ticking off one by one the areas in which the USSR reshaped (or destroyed) institutions in eastern European countries to produce states modeled on the USSR itself. Unquestionable, she has a strongly anti-communist view. Her evidence, however, is so compelling that this view becomes a very convincing narrative of what happened, and how it happened. Moreover, she writes very well, so that what could have been an important but turgid framework for footnotes becomes a powerful narrative. For me, her compelling arguments and her crushing pile of evidence moved at least this reader away from the standard old liberal view of "well, yeah, but the U.S. did lots of bad things too". What happened in Eastern Europe was not an accident, and it didn't reflect the wishes of most of the people in the region. The fall of Communism in Eastern Europe, after reading this account of its beginnings, looks like a very good thing indeed.

This is a scary book. I have recently visited Budapest, Berlin and Prague and cannot but think of what went on in those cities when I was already alive. I hope the inhabitants have been able to put it all behind them, but that lessons have been learned. Communism should never have been more than an just another bit of food for thought in shaping a just and livable society. It should never have prevailed. Mind you, the right extreme version was no better, but it did not stay in power for nearly as along. Shudders.

I'm new to embroidery and have been looking for some simple patterns. I love this book and can't wait to get started!! The pictures are appealing and size doable for newbies. I love this book so much I bought another one to give as a gift.

This is my third book on contemporary embroidery. I really enjoy the format of the book, the simple tutorials on different stitches (with colored floss, which is much nicer than hand drawn diagrams), and the cute variety of doodles. The idea of including a disc with the templates for all the doodles is fantastic! They are organized into convenient categories such as Asian chic, flowers, woodland creatures, and more.The only reason for the 4 star review is the ease of use for the digital templates. They are very large files with NO TRANSPARENCY!!! So even if you scale each layer down using a photo editing program, there is no way to overlap or combine templates without them blanking out the adjacent image. Luckily I am pretty handy with photo editing and have changed most of the templates I like to have transparency in PNG format so I can combine them and move them around as I like. Some images burn out or have very faint lines if they are reduced too small, so I work on a large background to try avoiding that.SO if it weren't for the technical frustrations, this book would have gotten 5 plus stars from me! I hope the author reads some reviews and continues making changes with each excellent book she releases. I'm looking forward to the next collection of motifs!

Now, keep in mind I am a beginner to embroidery. I do many fiber arts projects and have done cross-stitch and embroidered cards in the past, but never traditional embroidery. I was inspired by all the cute projects on etsy to do my own, so obviously the first thing I did was look on Amazon to find a book. This book is great. It shows some basic stitches, has some projects (some of which I know I'll never use, but some I definitely will try) and the CD of all the doodles is so handy. I'm a lover of technology, so it was really easy for me to pop in the CD, drag the file to Photoshop and create the design I wanted. I ended up mixing doodles, fonts I already had (I actually used a cross-stitch font to get a bit of that look in) and even some shapes from Photoshop for my first project. I could size exactly how I wanted, print and voila! I had my first design! I'm definitely a fan and I pretty much can figure what I'll be doing for all my friends next Christmas ;)

I bought this book looking for cute, fun patterns and that's what I got. There are tons of motifs in several categories that would be easy to combine to make your own patterns.I don't have image editing software on my current computer so I didn't find the included CD that helpful but it does enlarge the images which would make them easier to trace and transfer by hand.I bought the Sublime Stitching book as well and it does not compare - the so called motifs in that book are one step above stick figure drawings. Doodle Stitching has several project ideas that can help get your creative juices flowing. Sublime Stitching has no project ideas and very few pictures.I also like how Aimee Ray includes the motifs in color which is helpful for beginners who want extra guidance when choosing colors.Overall a great book for beginners, I have already recommended it to several friends!

I love this book and Sublime Stitching. I love to embroider. Unfortunately I can't draw. These books help me with that flaw.I liked the first Doodle Stitching book which was more project based. (I wish she included another quilt though like the last book.) This book is more about the patterns. I especially like the Woodland Fairytale section. They are pretty whimsical.I hope that Aimee Ray does another book but includes an Americana and a Holiday section.I'm currently making a pillow out of a pattern in this book for my sister for Christmas.I hope that more embroidery books come out. In my opinion there aren't enough on the market.

I use rthis book for inspiration and have made a couple of pillow case covers because this book is simple enough for a child or a novice. She is generous enough to share and I am happy to be guided. I really am glad I stumbled upon this book. It is not boring or unaccessible, mentally, emotionally or artisticlly. It inspires, it opens little doors of possibility. She makes it all seem light and easy and if you have ever read a book on any craft that makes it so dry and complicated, you know what I mean!! This is my second book from her and we would be very good friends if we lived next to each other. Of that I am sure!!

The CD in the back of the book makes this perfect... no need to awkwardly photocopy or trace with the paperback spine in the way. It also makes it super-easy to resize the design in a photo-editing program. The motifs are a little cutesy for my taste, and sometimes it's hard to find what you're looking for (who knew the Matryoska dolls would be in the "Fairy Tale" section?) so I knocked it back to four stars. Excellent value, though.

It's already my most useful embroidery resource. I've had it for about a month.The negative review that stood out in my mind was the person who complained that they could have drawn the images. Well, I can't draw, so this book is amazing for me. Usually I have to scour the Internet, design books I have, etc. to find images to trace, iron on, and embroider. I only decorate useful items- towels, washcloths, pillow cases, ... -so finding images of an appropriate size was also wonderful!

The nice, simple design on the outside and inside are great and so is the overall quality. The plastic seems pretty durable and encases the paper planner. It's a checkbook style calendar which is awesome and you can view the entire month. I'm glad for the price I got a 2 year pocket calendar.

Love my calendar! How clever to make a two year calendar. This calendar has just enough space to write in important events of the day, and with the two years, I can stay ahead without having to go to another calendar. I use paperclips to keep it open to the month I am in. I keep it on my dresser and check it each morning. It is also small enough to go into a small purse, and has a sturdy cover, so it won't get damaged in travel.

Very colorful. Like the lines in each space.

Exactly what I wanted. I buy one of these calendars every 2 years and like the style that opens like a checkbook, which this does. You see the entire month at a time. The pages are various light colors with the date numbers in bold. The back of the calendar has extra pages for notes. Very pleased with the layout and look of this planner.

Very attractive until you look on the back and the design is permanently emblazoned with non nonremoveable advertising and POS information. Almost all items have these on a sleeve or sticker that will allow you to remove it, and not have to carry it around and look at it for the next 2 years, seems like a cheesy way to advertise.

I really love this calendar. The spaces are actually big enough to write something in, and it fits great in my purse.

Pretty good. I can use all kinds of mediums with no bleeding. Some of the better images are missing, these postcards included mostly flowers.

For those of us who like to color, this artist is fantastic. I really like her large, oversized book, "The Secret Garden", but as others have noted, the pages are large and double-sided; therefore, they are difficult to copy because of the size. I still love that book for the hidden gems, but I REALLY love these postcards because I can actually copy them, practice with colors, and send them to the people I love. *NOTE* These require pencil work as pens will generally bleed through. Also, the designs are, appropriately, more simplistic for a postcard. I really love this!!

I'm very in to the adult coloring books that are coming out lately. These postcards are extra special. I made some to send to my nieces in Switzerland, and they were a huge hit! I think it means a lot more to the recipient as well, as you have put time and effort into the postcard. I've included two pictures, unfortunately neither of these are finished products, but I'm sure they will help you see that these are awesome!

I was going through a stressful time at work dealing with an exceptionally difficult client. In my down time this coloring book has saved my sanity. I don't like wasting time on frivolous things, and I love the fact that once these are colored they can be detached and sent to friends. Sanity inspired coloring with a purpose! The card stock is thick with a high quality feel. The black lines are bold and have penetrated the card stock well. I have used watercolor pencils on these cards and the water has no effect on the black lines- no bleeding, fading, wear etc. These cards also tear away easily and cleanly. Nothing would be more frustrating than spending time on coloring a pretty card only to have the tear-away edge destroy your work. Luckily that's not an issue with these. They are definitely high quality and have helped with stress, boredom etc.The different designs are great. Some are very complex and some significantly less so. There are definitely options on how detailed of a picture you'd like to spend your time on. All are lovely and well thought out.

I started coloring adult coloring books this last Summer. I bought the Johanna Basford Garden and Forest books and was delighted. I was then looking for some blank notecards that I could color and write my own poem in and these came up. The pictures are very interesting and detailed with a lot of oddities if you like that sort of thing. I use a lighted magnifying glass, also bought at Amazon, to color them with. Only Prismacolor Verithin colored artist pencils are sharp and fine enough to color these kind of renderings. They are post cards with a little stamp box that also has a tangling of vines around it. I don't send them as a post card because I don't want the picture to get ruined in the mail, I just pop them into an envelope. I use them as Thank You cards and people love receiving them.

We were given the BIG book for a gift...and then heard about the post cards! HOW COOL! Not only can you decorate a smaller version, but they also make AMAZING gifts along with a sweet set of pens!!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! For the detail oriented kid or adult......very zen like. :)

The reason I'm only giving this book of postcards 4 stars is that the pictures, while beautiful, appear to have been shrunk to fit (at least in some cases), so there are areas that are way too small for my coloring skill level (i.e. I'm not very good). It also makes it difficult to impossible to use anything other than the tiniest pen nibs or pencils sharpened to a very small point. I estimate this is true of about 7 of the 20 postcards. The cardstock is nice and thick, so I don't think there will be bleed through (haven't used pens yet).My first order of this book came damaged; another was sent to me very quickly at no charge, AND my money was refunded. And this is one reason why I love shopping on Amazon.

I bought these postcards for me and my husband to color. We're sick of coloring princess with our daughter. These are gorgeous! Nice and thick cardstock, beautiful book that they are contained in. GORGEOUS! I highly recommend.

Really nice little postcard coloring book - all sorts of interesting pictures which you can color and decorate to suit your fancy! My only complaint is that some of the drawings are very small and make it difficult to find the lines to color without using a magnifying glass. It's great for adults, but youngsters may have problems with fine motor skills due to the small size of the lines and drawings. I would recommend using ink pens if you don't have a lighted magnifier that can be used by the colorist. But the variety of drawings are quite intricate and original, and provide hours of entertainment to develop your own stories and fairy tales!

We have 3 toed box turtles and this book has been the best book yet to help learn how to take care of ou 2grown and multi babies. It is a life saver for sure. If you need info it is there and easy to follow too

I Have a Russian Tortoise, and I find that this book is very helpful for the care of my pet. The price is well within the comfort range.

It told me everything I needed to know in plain straight forward facts and gave me other interesting facts on other tortoises I didn't know
