Wonderful book , I laughed along with Ted and cried along with Ted. As I read about the characteristics of Merle I started observing the character of my dogs more. I did skip some of the book . I wasn't interested in the habits and statistics of wolves and coyotes ,all I wanted to read the storyline of Ted and Merle.

Ted Kerasote's book on his freethinking dog Merle is filled with his extensive knowledge on the wildlife and humorous episodes with his canine buddy Merle, who reminds me of Snoopy in his independent character and individual personality. I am enthralled by the way he and Merle communicated to each other, which I find scintillating. The author has a unique way with a dog as if he were his real buddy and/or partner in performing any daily tasks together. Such human-canine bond seems primordial and endemic in an environment where the world of the wildlife is paraded within arm's reach. In sum, reading this book will enlighten you on how a human-canine relationship can evolve with lots of smiles and tears.

I hardly know how to begin. This is truly a 5 star book. When I read a book like this I want everybody to read it. Therefore, I go around telling people ----read Merle's Door. To begin, Ted Kerasote is a fine writer. He is in complete control of this book from word one. True, this is a dog story. There are 1000's of dog stories out there. I recently read that dog stories are the most popular literature today. But this is not just a dog story, it is much more. Merle is an unusual dog and Kerasote, himself, is a story. He is an outdoorsman, writes for outdoor magazines and lives in the wild. He has hiked, canoed, biked and climbed mountains all over the world. He did not want a dog. Merle choose Ted. One cold morning in Utah Kerasote, woke, in his sleeping bag, and found Merle curled up beside him. Thus begins their story. Bonding with a dog is one of live's blessings. You get an inside look at this beautiful experience as Kerasote and Merle learn to trust and love each other. His next book Pukka's Promise is also a fine book. It has a wealth of data and research about dogs. It is entirely different from Marle's Door but well written and enjoyable. One comment made about my reviews is that I write more pans than praise. This is probably true. I am incensed if my time has been spent reading a poorly written book. However, if a book has 100s of 5 stars, then I don't NEED to write. Merle's Door has 100s of 5 stars, but I needed to write. I write this because I feel so strongly I want to put my 5 stars up there too.

Merle was an independent dog and loved his mountain life in Wyoming. He roamed freely and everyone in the town loved him, “The Mayor” as they called him for his congenial ways of befriending all. I couldn’t help but get attached to him as if he were my own dog! He & the author have a symbiotic relationship, each needing the other for their fulfilled life of hunting, hiking, skiing, and being outdoorsmen. This story is well-told, with lots of research and anecdotes. I’d recommend it, but be ready for extreme attachment to this lovable pooch and his human.

I was going to give this 3 stars, because I honestly hated the ending, but decided that I should be fair, and give it four stars, because overall, this book is very thought provoking. The author not only writes about his dog, but also what his dog might be thinking, and his ideas are based on extensive research he has done on the evolution of dogs. I found a lot of ideas fascinating, and also found myself researching more extensively on some o the topics that he covered. Why not five stars? I found the author to be a bit naive about dog owners who do not offer their dogs the freedom he offers his. First, the author resides in a rural setting, which most dog owners do not. Dogs that reside in an urban or suburban environment, if treated with the same freedom, would possibly end up injured or dead, or even stolen.Second, the author implies that lack of training on the dog owner results in dogs that are disobedient. I have to disagree with him because he got lucky with Merle. Very lucky. Having been involved in dog rescue, I can assure you that few dogs who have been homeless at some point are as mentally stable as Merle. It takes years of training to undo the damage that has been done to them, and in the meantime, it's the owners responsibility to keep their dog safe. This means that they can't offer their dog a doggy door and expect their dog not to get hurt, or hurt someone else, or even just run away. Therefore they should not be judged for merely keeping their dog safe.Otherwise a great read, very much enjoyed it, and would read it again.

I have read alot of dog stories, but this one helped me mourn for a favorite pet of mine as I wasn't able to be there for her when she past. I was on assignnment in another part of the country for several weeks and although I missed her very much, I didn't realize until I read this book that I hadn't had closure of her passing.I sent the Author an email thanking him and telling him about this experience and he was kind enough to answer me.A truly wonderful read if dogs mean as much to you as they do me and Ted Kerosote.

Yet Merle’s Door is also a human-dog partnership story. A beautifully written story combining scientific canine facts with a story as compelling as Racing in the Rain. With hundreds of scientific references, Kerasote explains the behavioral science of dogs in a manner as interesting as his narration of their adventures and misadventures. The book was as compelling as any mystery I have read in the past five years. Buy a box of tissues for the last several chapters. Spoiler alert: the dog dies. Kerasote creates word pictures as if he owns stock in Kleenex.Merle is allowed to make his own decisions, within reason, for instance chasing bison is off-limits. The author and his dog live in remote Wyoming and raising a dog as he did would not work in the city, but it is a fascinating study for semi-remote settings.I highly recommend the book to anyone who loves dogs and wonder why they act as they do and is interested in a good dog and human relationship story.

The New Case for Gold, by James Rickards

Review

“The New Case for Gold reminds us that wayward policies bring about a search for money that is good as gold. What better than gold itself?”—Wall Street Journal“This excellent book proves that, contrary to the propaganda of fiat currency apologists, gold is real money. Rickards makes a compelling case for why those looking for a way to protect themselves and their families from economic chaos created by central bankers should consider gold.” —Ron Paul, former Congressman and Presidential candidate “In his latest book, James Rickards gifts us once again with his clarity of prose, depth of experience and sound analysis. The New Case for Gold discards tired and politically driven criticisms of gold, instead offering an illuminating, original argument for gold as a critical contender in today's money games. The most important book on gold yet.”—Nomi Prins, author of All The Presidents’ Bankers “We can’t trust the Federal Reserve to do the honest work that Jim Rickards has done in writing this book. When the monetary system finally fails, there will be a flight to the only money that’s left in the system—and that will be gold. Essential reading.”  —David A. Stockman, Former OMB Director and author of The Great Deformation“[Rickards] present[s] compelling evidence that many of the world’s leading monetary authorities implicitly, at least, treat gold as — quite possibly in the future, the key — money.”—Forbes

I read Currency Wars, another book written by the author, a while ago. Even though I was impressed by the concept the author presented in that book, I was turned off by his writing style. In that book, the author spent chapters and chapters bragging about himself telling us how great and important he was, perhaps to establish credibility. The reader had to sift through the fluff to get to the gems of wisdom. As you probably already know, that book made the author famous and currency wars is now a widely understood and often quoted concept in mainstream media. This book is very different in that regard. It is concise, to the point, mostly factual and the arguments that the author presents are based on sound economic principles. There is very minimal bragging by the author so hardly any fluff. I was able to finish the book within a weekend reading off an on during the day. I am utterly impressed by the author. He is not only knowledgeable but also a genius who can use his knowledge to visualize the future. His arguments are extremely sound. It is amazing how he explains complex economic concepts in simple language for the regular reader. Most readers will not even realize that he is using Masters or PHD level economic concepts to explain what is happening and what will happen. I have a master's in economics from a top school in the nation so I understand the concepts he is using to arrive at certain conclusions.Another reason I was impressed by this great man is his acknowledgement that he may be wrong. That is the mark of a wise and experienced person because you really never know what will happen in the future. He presents various scenarios on what will unfold in the future without making predictions with certainty. He only suggests that you put 10% of your investible assets in gold. Why? Because he says that even if he is wrong, you will lose minimal amount of money.Even though I have more or less come to the same conclusions as the author and believe that what he is saying is probably right, it is possible that the future may unfold differently. Regardless, read this book! It is worth your time and money.Mr. James Rickards, has done an amazing job this time!

This book is just 'okay' in my view, but not great. In order to explain why, let me first say that my interest in gold and silver as a store of wealth is high. I fear the devaluation of the US currency by the Fed just as much as the next guy. When I started reading this, I was actually interested in gold as a potential backing for money in the future and I'd read closely articles that described why gold could reach $8000/oz should our government decide to set up a gold standard at a very low parity. This book contains a lot of similar arguments to that extent. It is interesting at times when it describes why gold has been used as money in the past and why (compared to other natural elements) is the only resource that can ever fulfill the three functions of money. The book talks about the gold position on the Fed's balance sheet and this is also very interesting. With this said, it isn't long until the book becomes a lot of assumptions and loosely structured arguments about what China is doing and what Russia is doing and what is likely with a gold-backed global currency. It discusses manipulation of the gold market and while this is interesting, it is similar to most of the arguments in this book - not academic or supported with a section of notes or a bibliography. It made me think that I wanted to get a perspective that's been well-researched and documented or even reviewed by other scholars. It's one thing to make an argument that sounds good or researched and it's another thing to build an argument on well-documented sources and evidence. So I'd recommend that readers of this book afterward pick up another recently published book, The End of Alchemy: Money, Banking, and the Future of the Global Economy . In it, a former governor of the Bank of England, Mervyn King, discusses questions about the future of money as well as a return to the gold standard. Because King's book has sources documented, I was referred to a both a great popular book on the role of the gold standard in causing the Great Depression Lords of Finance: The Bankers Who Broke the World as well as an academic article written by Ben Bernanke on the same subject. I see now that while gold has value and I'll continue to buy some to store my wealth, it'll never become the backing of the US money supply again. I'll let you research that for yourself rather than attempting to explain why.So Richards book is entertaining but it leaves a lot to be desired if your goal is to get a balanced approach to the question of gold's future in our economy. It's a quick read and won't hurt to skim through as it contains a lot of interesting ideas. It's just up to the reader to go and find out how much evidence there really is to support those ideas.

I remember seeing Clint Malarchuk's horrific neck injury as a kid, but had not thought about him in years until seeing a 2014 profile of him on ESPN. I did not have any idea what the years after his NHL career had been like or that he has a bullet in his head as a result of a suicide attempt.Malarchuk's autobiography is very different from most sports autobiographies. As far as I know, the only other athlete who really tackles the subject of mental illness head on is Jimmy Piersall in his famous "Fear Strikes Out." memoir..The first third of Malarchuk's book is rather slow as he discusses his childhood and makes his way up the ladder in hockey. But once Malarchuk suffers his 1989 injury, the book picks up as Malarchuk's life spirals downward. It now seems difficult to believe that Malarchuk did not receive any professional counseling following his injury or that he was back on the ice just 10 days after nearly dying. He speculates in the book that one of the reasons the NHL Players' Association was so willing to pay for his trip to rehab long after his career ended is because there was at least some sense of guilt on the part of the league for not getting him some emotional support when the injury happened.Malarchuk talks about his battles with obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, anxiety, insomnia, nightmares -- all of which were made worse by alcoholism. Few athletes have ever laid bare their problems in print the way Malarchuk does here. One thing that really stuck out to me during the latter stages of the book is how amazing it is that his wife, Joanie, did not leave him when Malarchuk's life began sinking further and further into a pit of mental illness.Another line from the book that really stuck out to me was Malarchuk admitting that when he was dreaming of being an NHL goaltender, he never really thought that the thing he would be most remembered for in his career would be suffering a terrible injury and nearly dying on the ice.Malarchuk is not a professional writer, and does not claim to be. But the book has a candor to it found in few other sports autobiographies.

I finished this book last night and am still processing it. The book had a bit of everything - funny to gut wrenching moments and joy. It was a rollercoaster ride and one I'm glad I took. As someone who deals with chronic depression I found myself nodding in places about the struggle, the voices in the head and remembering my own attempts from my past. It really is hard to describe what you are going through to someone else and get them to understand. There is no such thing as being better, you manage and survive. It's not like you caught a cold and it will be gone in a few days. You battle every day. While others have slammed Mr. Malarchuk for his words and bravado in their reviews, I have to wonder how many of them have ever played a professional sport at the level he did or gone through such a traumatic event as having their throat slit? Mr. Malarchuk showed himself, showed who he is as a person, as a player, father, etc. in a very raw way. No one is superman, none of us are perfect but this is who this man is and to come forth and share his story is important. It needed to be told.I enjoyed this book very much and as someone who has been in the trenches for a long time, it's encouraging to hear another talk about their struggle so openly.

What an incredibly brave act by Clint Malarchuk to lay bare the details of his life's struggle. As a nearly 40-year mental health practitioner, I was astonished at the number of times and the number of ways people failed Clint. In the 80's we already had "mandated reporters" and yet teachers and coaches who surely knew of his family circumstances did nothing. Thus, the abuse continued and Clint and his mother ended up needlessly abandoned and impoverished. A systemic failure by everyone around them which contributed to Clint's development of severe OCD and depression to walk hand-in-glove with his PTSD. This, along with the genetic guarantee of his father's alcoholism ended up directing his path of wildly complicated coping and avoidance pertaining to the ghosts that haunted him and the undeniably loving heart and courageous spirit that drove him forward to his fate.I highly recommend this book to mental health providers, doctors of all specialties, and coaches. Until the end of the book, we see a processation of professionals who missed the boat in their diagnostic and treatment decisions. This book is a great case study in that regard. For athletes this an important and cautionary tale: when your life feels unbalanced, IT IS. Listen to your body talk to you - don't dull the voice with drugs or a lifestyle that distracts you from your own truth.

Its amazing what Clint has been through and how his wife stuck by his side through it all. Before reading I've always known him as the goalie who played for the Sabres who got his neck sliced during a game and almost bled to death. I never realized all that he has been through before and after that incident and the type of mental issues that he has faced during his life. The book chronicles his hockey career all the way back to when he was a kid up to his days as an NHL/Minor league coach. There are many humorous and exciting stories in this book but it is also candid and blunt when it came battling his demons with alcohol and mental illness. I think Clint is a great writer and hopefully someday will write another.

Started to obsess about hockey back in the early 90's, when NHL 2 Night showed the great highlights of Gretzky, Mario, and the other all stars... One night, it must've been the anniversary of Clint's injury... Before YouTube and rewinding live TV... Knowing that Clint struggled with more than the physical injury he's known for made this book a must read...

Yuval Noah Harari's "Homo Deus" continues the tradition introduced in his previous book "Sapiens": clever, clear and humorous writing, intelligent analogies and a remarkable sweep through human history, culture, intellect and technology. In general it is as readable as "Sapiens" but suffers from a few limitations. On the positive side, Mr. Harari brings the same colorful and thought-provoking writing and broad grasp of humanity, both ancient and contemporary, to the table. He starts with exploring the three main causes of human misery through the ages - disease, starvation and war - and talks extensively about how improved technological development, liberal political and cultural institutions and economic freedom have led to very significant declines in each of these maladies. Continuing his theme from "Sapiens", a major part of the discussion is devoted to shared zeitgeists like religion and other forms of belief that, notwithstanding some of their pernicious effects, can unify a remarkably large number of people across the world in striving together for humanity's betterment. As in "Sapiens", Mr. Harari enlivens his discussion with popular analogies from current culture ranging from McDonald's and modern marriage to American politics and pop music. Mr. Harari's basic take is that science and technology combined with a shared sense of morality have created a solid liberal framework around the world that puts individual rights front and center. There are undoubtedly communities that don't respect individual rights as much as others, but these are usually seen as challenging the centuries-long march toward liberal individualism rather than upholding the global trend. The discussion above covers about two thirds of the book. About half of this material is recycled from "Sapiens" with a few fresh perspectives and analogies. The most important general message that Mr. Harari delivers, especially in the last one third of the book, is that this long and inevitable-sounding imperative of liberal freedom is now ironically threatened by the very forces that enabled it, most notably the forces of technology and globalization. Foremost among these are artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. These significant new developments are gradually making human beings cede their authority to machines, in ways small and big, explicitly and quietly. Ranging from dating to medical diagnosis, from the care of the elderly to household work, entire industries now stand to both benefit and be complemented or even superseded by the march of the machines. Mr. Harari speculates about a bold vision in which most manual labor has been taken over by machines and true human input is limited only to a very limited number of people, many of whom because of their creativity and demand will likely be in the top financial echelons of society. How will the rich and the poor live in these societies? We have already seen how the technological decimation of parts of the working class was a major theme in the 2016 election in the United States and the vote for Brexit in the United Kingdom. It was also a factor that was woefully ignored in the public discussion leading up to these events, probably because it is much easier to provoke human beings against other human beings rather than against cold, impersonal machines. And yet it is the cold, impersonal machines which will increasingly interfere with human lives. How will social harmony be preserved in the face of such interference? If people whose jobs are now being done by machines get bored, what new forms of entertainment and work will we have to invent to keep them occupied? Man after all is a thinking creature, and extended boredom can cause all sorts of psychological and social problems. If the division of labor between machines and men becomes extreme, will society fragment into H. G. Wells's vision of two species, one of which literally feeds on the other even as it sustains it?These are all tantalizing as well as concerning questions, but while Mr. Harari does hold forth on them with some intensity and imagination, this part of the book is where his limitations become clear. Since the argument about ceding human authority to machines is also a central one, the omission also unfortunately appears to me to be a serious one. The problem is that Mr. Harari is an anthropologist and social scientist, not an engineer, computer scientist or biologist, and many of the questions of AI are firmly grounded in engineering and software algorithms. There are mountains of literature written about machine learning and AI and especially their technical strengths and limitations, but Mr. Harari makes few efforts to follow them or to explicate their central arguments. Unfortunately there is a lot of hype these days about AI, and Mr. Harari dwells on some of the fanciful hype without grounding us in reality. In short, his take on AI is slim on details, and he makes sweeping and often one-sided arguments while largely skirting clear of the raw facts. The same goes for his treatment for biology. He mentions gene editing several times, and there is no doubt that this technology is going to make some significant inroads into our lives, but what is missing is a realistic discussion of what biotechnology can or cannot do. It is one thing to mention brain-machine interfaces that would allow our brains to access supercomputer-like speeds in an offhand manner; it's another to actually discuss to what extent this would be feasible and what the best science of our day has to say about it.In the field of AI, particularly missing is a discussion of neural networks and deep learning which are two of the main tools used in AI research. Also missing is a view of a plurality of AI scenarios in which machines either complement, subjugate or are largely tamed by humans. When it comes to AI and the future, while general trends are going to be important, much of the devil will be in the details - details which decide how the actual applications of AI will be sliced and diced. This is an arena in which even Mr. Harari's capacious intellect falls short. The ensuing discussion thus seems tantalizing but does not give us a clear idea of the actual potential of machine technology to impact human culture and civilization. For reading more about these aspects, I would recommend books like Nick Bostrom's "Superintelligence", Pedro Domingos's "The Master Algorithm" and John Markoff's "Machines of Loving Grace". All these books delve into the actual details that sum up the promise and fear of artificial intelligence.Notwithstanding these limitations, the book is certainly readable, especially if you haven't read "Sapiens" before. Mr. Harari's writing is often crisp, the play of his words is deftly clever and the reach of his mind and imagination immerses us in a grand landscape of ideas and history. At the very least he gives us a very good idea of how far we as human beings have come and how far we still have to go. As a proficient prognosticator Mr. Harari's crystal ball remains murky, but as a surveyor of past human accomplishments his robust and unique abilities are still impressive and worth admiring.

This book is a mixed bag. It has three parts. The first is a review of some of the concepts explored in Harari's earlier book Sapiens. It elaborates on the fascinating concept of "intersubjective reality", whereby concepts that are shared in our collective imagination have great power to shape our objective reality; examples given include money, corporations, pop-culture brands, and religions. Part 1 is engaging and insightful, and deserves 4/5 stars.Part 2 is a critique of what Harari calls "humanism". He really dislikes humanism: he inaccurately states its tenets, and then repeatedly mocks it (for example, as promoting indulgent consumerism and sex). He claims that humanism is what is giving rise to an emerging cybernetic dystopia, described in Part 3.Harari is abusing the word "humanism," as a canvas on which to paint his caricature of modern liberal culture ("liberal" in the classical sense, not in the sense of left-wing politics). He is not really interested in what humanist writers and philosophers have actually said, and does not reference their works. He claims that humanism promotes the belief in a supernatural free will (when in fact, humanists value agency and freedom, but have differing opinions on free will). He claims that humanism believes in an indivisible self/soul (when in fact, psychologists since Freud have a different understanding). And he claims that humanism believes that individuals always know best about their own needs (when in fact, many have emphasized the importance of education in our development--he does not even reference John Dewey). Harari also co-opts related terms that already have other established meanings, such as "evolutionary humanism" and "liberal humanism".If you want to understand humanism or other social-political movements of the 19th and 20th centuries, Harari will lead you astray. Part 2 deserves only 2/5 stars.Part 3 is a dire prediction for humanity's future, as genetic engineering, AI, and human-machine interface technologies advance. Harari gives several scenarios, each of which are described very plausibly as future extrapolations of current trends. These scenarios are thought provoking and disturbing--we as a society should be taking them more seriously. There is an interesting discussion of an emerging religion/ideology of "dataism", wherein moral worth depends on the ability to enhance data flow, rather than on consciousness. Part 3 deserves 4/5 stars. For most of the book, Harari appears to be adopting a materialistic perspective, and one which is also extremely unsentimental and discounts the significance of human morale and character. He pretends to assume that human beings are nothing more than algorithms. However, some of his arguments (against the existence of an indivisible self, against free-will) are similar to those in Buddhism. He also discusses how animals and people have consciousness and subjective experiences, and presumes that artificial intelligence will remain unconscious (the "weak AI" hypothesis of John Searle). And on the very last page, he makes us wonder if his hardcore materialistic perspective has just been a long, extended ruse: he asks us to question a worldview that would deny the significance of consciousness. So it seems likely that in a future book he will focus on the nature of consciousness, and argue for non-theistic Buddhism (an understated agenda in Harari's writing--perhaps he thinks that this is the way for humanity to avoid the grim fate predicted here?).The reader concerned about techno-dystopia may also be interested in "Weapons of Math Destruction," by Cathy O'Neil.[Update 6/13/2017: see the comment below, by kaiser100, for further insight into Harari's perspective on consciousness and meditation. The comment begins with "Harari indeed believes that developing an understanding of consciousness, a science of mind, or however else one wishes to phrase it is the best and perhaps the only way to avert the grim fate that threatens humanity in this century."]

I watched and rewatched the anime when i was in my teens..10 years later, feeling nostalgic, i decided to start the manga. I just received vol. 1 today. I'm really glad I bought this. It's a wonderful story with a great main character. He's just fantastic in my opinion. I've experienced many, many fictions in many forms...books, comics, manga, movies, tv shows, anime..and Kenshin Himura will always be among my favorite main characters. So powerful yet so kind, softhearted, and humble. A wonderful combination, and quite unique for the decade in which this was written...as well as today. The qualities and attributes Himura displays (after he leaves his title of Batosai), the qualities of goodness, kindness, modesty, patience, and humility combined with his courage, strength, and sense of justice, are excellent qualities for young readers (and older readers) to be exposed to and learn from.

A few years ago, I began to start watching anime, and decided to try manga. Okay, to be honest, it wasn't entirely that way. I had thought of reading manga before as I had thought of watching anime before, but I just didn't know where to start reading first. A relative, who knows my tastes in fiction, and my beliefs, found a manga of a character that I could enjoy watching.*Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Swordsman Romantic Story*, or plain-old *Rurouni Kenshin* (or *RuroKen* even more so) for short, is a manga about a wandering swordsman named Himura Kenshin, who rescues a young girl from a fight with a hulking killer who claims to be the legendary “Battousai”, the deadliest of a group of assassins (known as the Hitokiri) who fought during the recent war inaugurating the Meiji era in Japan. The girl, a young heir to the dojo of her father, who was slain in the recent war, is named Kamiya Kaoru. She is grateful, though a tad peeved at Kenshin for his goofy ways. She also is a tad prejudiced against him for his “Rurouni” ways. Rurouni means “wanderer” (though it should be noted that is a fake word that the mangaka - Watsuki-sensei - made up), and that is what Kenshin has done lately. This is not exactly considered respectable. Eventually, the reason is revealed why, when she learns that he is, in fact, the *true* Hitokiri Battousai. In guilt over his past as an assassin, as well as for other reasons, Himura has changed his path, and wanders around, doing good, with his reverse-bladed sword. With this peculiar blade, it is almost impossible to kill someone, which is just how he wants it to be. He can still do so, but prefers to avoid that irrevocable step. Eventually, a lonely and grateful Kaoru invites him to stay with her at her dojo as a boarder. At this point, it should be noted, nothing romantic occurs, he is just her friend. This manga appealed to me for a number of reasons. First of all, it was unique compared to American comics. It was not filled with super-heroes, or some adaptation of a popular book or movie, for instance. In other words, it wasn't the typical “comic-book” fare. It was a historical drama. Granted the “history” was played with, as the author freely admits. That in itself, I will add, was quite refreshing. All too many authors try to pretend their stories are more accurate than they truly are. The author here does the opposite of this, freely admitting the story is largely fabricated. The premise is also interesting to me, as it centers on the adventures of a former warrior in late-19th century Japan who did his best to fight for justice. He also, as we see in later volumes, seeks to atone for his misdeeds and mistakes and struggles with self-worth. As a veteran, I empathize and identify with this character type. The other part I liked was that his philosophy was one I agree with entirely. I freely admit that I enjoy it when the hero of a story shares my beliefs instead of trashing them. In this case, this is not beliefs of a religious nature. The author seems to have studiously left out religion for the most part, and, from what I have heard, when there are some Christian bad guys later on, they are made clear to not be typical Christians, but guys who are misusing their faith. In general, the author, Nobuhiro Watsuki, stays away from political and ideological issues of today. That is not to say that politics or religion are not dealt with, but that they are limited to those issues that the characters would have dealt with and discussed *at the time* when the story takes place. This does take the story into condemning later evils like imperialism beginning to rise.Philosophically, Kenshin is someone who is mostly a pacifist, but *WILL* fight when the need arises. Even then, he will not kill normally, but he will do so if he has no other choice. He just tries to avoid each step of the way, and when he does have to do what he would rather not, he takes no pleasure in doing so.The dynamic for the character is sort of similar to that for Superman in his stories, where there are some bad guys who can pose a physical threat to Big Blue, but it is much more a story of Superman's personal and moral struggles. Here too, few can defeat Kenshin, but there are enough people who are good enough to challenge him to the point that he has to fight hard enough that he risks killing them. It is the personal struggle at heart here that makes the tale so interesting. Most people may not care for the philosophy quite as much as I do, because they might not share it, or might even find it weird and absurd. In our darker and edgier age of movies with guys that freely kill, a highly moralistic and extremely pacifistic character is not welcome to most, but he is to me. I can't recommend this enough. You see, I can sympathize with Kenshin, because I feel the same way for similar reasons. I didn't assassinate folks like the fictional Kenshin (based, as all the characters are, *very loosely* on an actual historical figure) did, but I was affected by a recent war, and I do hate violence, but if it is necessary to be violent, I hate any and all sadistic enjoyment thereof. I am a lot like the character in that regard, though certainly not similar in actual fighting prowess (obviously!).For those who also like insights into the author's thoughts, there are character sketches and tidbits from the author about the work in progress. This is an incredible manga and If really can't recommend it enough.

Out of Print as of writing (may 15th 2018). Fantastic series, Vizbig editions are always a treat with nice quality paper, 1 or 2 chapters in color per book and a nice condensed way to collect some of the longer manga series.Art is clean crisp and easy to follow combat. Fun characters and despite it being about a samurai called "The Man Slayer" this series is family friendly as it isn't gory and is about him redeeming himself by vowing to never take another life and fighting with a reversed blade sword after the atrocities he had seen and committed in the war.I would like to give a special acknowledgment to Seattle Goodwill, who sold it used "good" condition for 11 shipped (not the OoP prices some are asking) and it honestly looks "Like new" as any dmg (maybe a corner isnt 100% straight) is from it merely existing as a book for years. I am extremely happy with my order as they had quick turn around and shipped it out same business day. Would buy from them again :]

I will admit that I saw the anime before I began reading the manga, but the thing I love most about it is the way the history of the war and new era are woven in with a fair amount of accuracy, according to my research, anyway. I found myself falling down the rabbit hole reading about the Tokugawa era and the Boshin War, so that I could better understand the time and references. The mysterious and almost lore-like past of the hero, Kenshin, keeps you interested in discovering how he became the man he was and now, the man he is. The battles he takes on and watching him transform from the peacekeeper to the badass captures your interest, as well. Defending the innocent from the wicked is always entertaining. And of course, as a woman, the development of the relationship between Kenshin and Kaoru plays a part, as well. ;)

Rurouni Kenshin has long been considered a classic Shonen Jump manga and after finally reading this volume I can see why.The story tells the story of Kenshin, a samurai who wanders the countryside in a time where only those who are part of the government are aloud to have a sword. Kenshin' s life is changed when he meets Oro, a young woman who is trying her best to keep her family dojo alive. As a whole volume 1 does a nice job of introducing characters and the world of Kenshin. It has a nice mix of comedy and serious moments. With a nice cast of charming characters. An odd note for the kindle version is in the last chapter, they accidentally added part of the first chapter in it. Which was a bit confusing at first. And a word of caution for those who care, Kenshin does get gory in a few times.
