Really nice book full of recipes and great information, I am just starting out with smokin meat and i already get his wonderful newsletter, so I am totally thrilled with this book........if you are thinking of buying a smoker, check Jeff out online and get on his mailing list.....he sends great advice and lots of good ideas for eating cheaper and staying out of the restaurants!
Well....I feel as though I paid for something that was already free. I looked at a lot of different books hoping to find one that would be sufficient for a new smoker, with tips, information, how to’s, and some recipes. This book covers that somewhat, but there isn’t anything in this book that isn’t on his site, which is extremely disappointing. Rubs cost on his site, and I mistakenly assumed they would be included in the book. Anyway, the book is good, but if you want to save nearly $25, open your browser and visit his site.
Solid book on the fundamentals of smoking. If you are new to smoking and just picked up a smoker at Home Depot on a whim I highly recommend this book. A co-worker friend of mine bought an electric smoker on Black Friday and I gave him this book for Christmas. The first half talks about the process of smoking, the woods, methods, different kinds of smokers etc. The 2nd half is recipes. The book is worth the purchase for the information in the first half. Most of the recipes are available on Jeff's website.Speaking of Jeff's website. It is my go to site whenever i am trying something new in my smoker. His knowledge and techniques are so easy to follow that just about anyone can produce a good smoked meal after reading.One word of caution, the rub and sauce recipes he mentions so frequently on his site are not included in the book even though the book does contain some sauce and rub recipes. Book is still worth the purchase.
Best book I've seen about the basics of smoking meats - Jeff breaks down everything you need to know about the different types of woods and smokers to use, plus methods for getting best results with each type of meat.Last summer I bought my first smoker (a basic Brinkmann Charcoal Smoker) and had some trouble getting the hang of how to use it and was overwhelmed by the number of recipes and other information you can find online. Tried a bunch of different things and was getting a little better each time but it was a slow process and I messed up a few different meals because I didn't really know what I was doing. Nothing I found online came close to what I learned from this book.After reading through it, I went from a beginner to an experienced smoker almost overnight. Friends, family and neighbors all tell me that my ribs, pulled pork and brisket are as good or better than any restaurant they've been to. Not trying to brag...but I agree. Wouldn't be right to try and take any of the credit for myself though - it all goes to Jeff.I love the recipes. I follow the directions and haven't been disappointed yet. 3-2-1 Ribs are by far my favorite. Last thing: Be sure to sign up for the emails - he sends out awesome recipes all the time that are a lot of fun to try out.
My husband loves this book. And I love this book for helping him get better at smoking meats. Seriously, it was awful before, but these recipes and instructions have made all the difference. It's like having another dude, standing there by his side, showing him the ropes. We used 3 of the recipes (for the rub, the sauce and meat) to smoke 28# of pulled pork for his birthday party, and it was a HUGE success. Everything's turned out great so far. Highly recommend.
I have owned this book for several years and I consider it my smoking "Bible". While I do have other smoking books, I find myself setting them down and grabbing this book. If you are new to smoking, Jeff Phillips will not steer you wrong. I enjoy his style and his recipes suit my style of cooking perfectly. If you enjoy easy to prepare, great tasting recipes, this is the book for you. Smoking meat is a bit science as well as a bit of art. We all smoke to temperature. But unless you have been doing this a long time and have taken a lot of notes, wouldn't it be nice to have a rough idea how long it will take to smoke your meal? Jeff has a lot of that documented for you. He'll make you look like a pro at your next family barbecue. Look him up on the web as well. Jeff offers great product reviews if your looking for a smoker as well as many tips and tricks to help you along the way.
Jeff is the premiere BBQ guy in Tulsa, so when I found he had written a book about it, I had to have it. There are recipe's in this book that you'd never expect to use in your BBQ efforts, like BBQ meat loaf. I don't like chicken and the whole family knows it but Jeff has a recipe that I just have to try. This is a great book and I highly recommend you give it a try. I think you'll like it too.
I purchased this book as a gift for my dad on the recommendation of a friend. My dad and friend have used this cookbook for making multiple different dishes all with excellent results. The pulled pork, smoked salmon...nothing has turned out less than excellent. I highly recommend this cookbook as a go to reference for smoking meat. I wouldn't say my dad is skilled at cooking or grilling, but everything he makes with this cookbook has turned out well and I believe he has used it about weekly over the past year.
The binding of this book is fantastic, it lays open when on the countertop so you can read the recipes hands free. Many good recipes inside and the many photos encourage one to smoke meats, veggies and more. I highly recommend.
