The book explores the uncomfortable truth about philanthropy: that the big money in American philanthropy was made by people who divided, controlled, and exploited people, land, and resources. Those same tendencies are embedded in how charity is disbursed today to address the consequences of years centuries of this colonial worldview. In short, on our current trajectory, we aren’t going to solve any of the wicked issues facing our community.Villanueva wrote this book for philanthropists and people working in finance. However, I read it as a fundraiser. It named ways in which I’ve at times felt uneasy with the implications of my work. It let me imagine a future in which we didn’t need fundraisers, or at least could get by with fewer of us, because we would headed off the crises of tomorrow by solving the problems of today. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about the implications for how I do my work.
Get ready to be schooled on the true history of money in the U.S.! You may wonder what does philanthropy and giving have to do with Immigration - everything! This book goes beyond it's theme and purpose, educating the reader on many aspects of indigenous roots, culture, and practices. The author makes a case for every American to re-think about the roots of money - how did the have's get their money if not by fraud and force. As our country experiences a major international crises (i.e. the migrant caravan of asylum seekers reaching our borders as we speak) it is imperative that we consider the financial roots of this international crises. There is no human crises that does not have financial roots or implications. I recommend it not only to immigration lawyers and practitioners, but also to college professors and students. Be inspired!
I had an opportunity to read an advanced copy of Villanueva’s first book, DECOLONIZING WEALTH, and have been incredibly excited about its public release. Edgar is pushing forward an important conversation around money, capitalism, and how we are all both complicit in and victim of its power to divide and exploit. Edgar shares personal stories of trauma and healing around money that we can all relate to. This is a must-read for everyone!
Edgar writes beautifully about the pain and damage of colonization, and also about the ways indigenous wisdom can help us to transform our relationship with money, one another, and the planet. He offers practical steps to shift our minds and our society from a colonizer mindset driven by division, control, and exploitation to connectedness, abundance, and resilience. A must read for anyone working for justice, anyone working with money, and anyone who wants a society where everyone is valued, no one is exploited, and everyone can thrive while we keep the planet healthy.
This is an amazing book to share with coworkers and friends working in the social sector. Great and provocative conversation starter as we try to embed equity into our work.
This book is a critical read for anyone working in philanthropy. It explains with clarity, compassion, and honesty the painful ground on which philanthropy is built. If we do not understand this foundation, then we may even be perpetuating the injustice we’re trying to fight. This book is also helpful for those who do not work in foundations, such as nonprofit leaders like me. We have been trained to be deferential, to be thankful for the grants we receive. The book reaffirms what many of us feel, that this system is flawed and we need to make it better. It is also an easy and engaging read; Edgar includes many interesting and illuminating stories. It is eye-opening to see what it’s actually like to work at a foundation. I recommend this book to anyone who works at a foundation, nonprofit, or government agency, or who just cares about the wealth disparity within our society.
This book speaks the hard-won wisdom of an Indigenous author who has worked for many years as one of the few Native Americans in institutional philanthropy, and illuminates valuable learnings for everyone involved in this field. As a White person who serves on the board of a family foundation, I highly recommend it. It made me squirm with discomfort, opened my eyes, taught me new things, and made me laugh. I sense its potential to create deep changes over time, by helping us transform ourselves, our institutions, and our society to become more healthy and equitable. The author grounds the book in the Lakota principle of Mitakuye Oyasin (we are all related) and with this orientation he creates a brilliant opening for those of us sitting in the seats of highest privilege. It's like holding our feet to the fire of accountability while letting us know we're still part of the family. I take it, simply, as a call we all need to hear right now, on behalf of the people and the planet. I will read it again, many times, because it contains many layers of nuance that will be valuable to how we manage, invest, and give money.
