I loved the illustrations, and the way information is given to young readers. But I was truly disappointed when I realized that the emphasis was European countries. South America was very neglected, there’s no Costa Rica, nor Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina or the eclectic islands of the Caribbean, I feel the same happens to Asia, specially the Middle East, and Africa. I feel a lot of great cultures, nature, arquitecture and fauna was left out.
There are currently two negative reviews about this book, which after receiving it, I would like to comment on. Both individuals were upset a country they love was left out. Ireland and Israel aren't in this book, but neither are Norway, Portugal, Denmark, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Ukraine, Turkey and several other European countries, along with every central American country, all nations in the Caribbean, the Philippines, South and North Korea, Indonesia, most of Africa and many others I'm not going to list. Indeed, there are only 52 maps in this book, which was never billed as a COMPLETE atlas. Instead, it's a gorgeous introduction for children (and adults) to pique enough interest to inspire them to learn more about the world. It's funny to me that the absence of both Ireland and Israel were highlighted in the reviews, since both countries have an entire book devoted to them by Sasek. To me, Maps is a great addition to learn more about culture and geography in conjunction with Sasek's amazing This is...series. Furthermore, Israel's capitol in Maps is listed as Jerusalem, which not even the Obama administration recognizes, so I'm still confused as to why one of the reviewers is so angry. Finally, Maps is printed in Poland! I'm getting very tired of Chinese made books, so this means a great deal to me.
I had bought it's Korean version first and then bought again the English version as I want to know the names in English as well.BUT I there is no Korea in English vesion.. (sigh)I still love this book though. :)
My 6 year old just loves leafing through this book. He's been focusing on a few favorite countries that he discovered on his own - currently it's Nepal, France and the US. It has inspired all sorts of questions and conclusions he's made on his own. Every country is not in the book, but the book does not claim to be a full atlas. We're trying to create a learning environment at home outside of school and this is a lovely addition. We love it!!
I purchased this book for my 10-year-old daughter for her upcoming birthday. She loves geography and I was searching for a detailed book of various maps with descriptions of the many countries, culture, foods, drinks, etc. This book does not disappoint. I can't wait for my daughter to see it!This is a fun book to thumb through. It does not feature all countries. But, I love the detail of the illustrations and the many random tidbits of each country. Definitely worth the buy!
I first saw this book at Anthropologie and it was priced at $35. Beautiful book and has a really sweet, antique-like feel to it! It is large (a bit less than 15" long and a bit less than 11" wide) and nice to hold too! I looked it up on Amazon, and sure enough here it is for $20! The illustrations within are detailed and darling! Lots to look at! My boys (ages 6 and 4) love paging through this magical book of maps. This book is lovely for children or adults alike. There are flags of the world in the very back of it too. The only odd thing I found in the book is that our city, which happens to be the capital of Texas, is actually NOT on the U.S. map, but San Antonio and Houston are! It would have been nice to see our city on the map for sure! I still think this book is magical and I bought a couple more for gifts!
This is a fun idea. Very large book. We bought it because we've started living overseas so we thought it would be fun to show the kids lots of places we'll visit. One drawback is they don't even have the place we currently live (Saudi Arabia) but they do have the more touristy places which is fun too.
I like the way they made this book look aged like old maps. This book isn't as clever as this author's Under Water/Under Earth book, but my son loves it. The maps could have used better detail about what each country was famous for. For example, if it showed a picture of the United States, it might have pictures of cattle and wheat on it instead of more famous landmarks and unique products.
