Go-to handbook. The concepts will click even if you have never worked in such an environment before, and if you have it will make you see the past issues and possible solutions more clearly. Excellent book!

I would expect better quality for a book titled "The Process Improvement Handbook"This book had warped pages and poor binding. The book also had very poor graphics. Cheap constrution quality for a hard cover book.

Excellent breadth of process improvement methods and tools. Do not expect significant depth or explanation on each method or tool. Regardless, the templates are very useful!

Ok, full disclaimer: I am an agile person - eat, drink, sleep, and dream agile/lean. I crossed the bridge to agility in 2003 and since burned the bridge. So it was with ample skepticism but open mind that I undertook this nuts-and-bolts book, temporarily suspending my personal connotations of "process management".What I found intrigued and delighted me. When I stepped aside of my "ask the team" mindset, my "just sprint and all will be revealed to you" mantra, I realized that Boutros and Purdie have managed to not only neatly distill the ABCs of process improvement, but build an entire process ecosystem. Sure, some of the "labels" of things aren't maybe what I'd call them, but the notion of process improvement and process care-taking are necessities, and therein lies the meat of this book. The fact is that someone (or a bunch of someones) needs to usher and guide good process refinements, of course including the team and business stakeholders in that exercise. Forget the nuance of labels; rather, read this book with an attempt to understand the purpose, the bigger picture, the thing that matters.Too many companies fall short on reliable, sustainable processes, and end up doing their customers and teams a disservice. While it is impossible to mistake-proof a complex adaptive system we call a 'business' (which by nature of being a business, evolves a little each and every day), it is certainly valuable for process minded people to help the business solve every day issues, from big to small, building a system that in turn signals when there are problems. I agree when the authors say that "simply changing functional titles into process roles does not fundamentally change an organization's landscape or provide the organization with end-to-end view that employees can cooperatively manage and improve." This handbook can fill in those knowledge gaps as Boutros and Purdie provide a list of core competencies that a good process change leader should possess and instill in others.Boutros and Purdie discuss the Process Improvement Manifesto, of which one key facet is agility. They beautifully referenced the ever-evolving state of process: "Ever changing, adapting, and serving an individual and collective purpose, the ecosystem must have sufficient maintenance to remain in good health." Inspect and adapt.If you are at all involved with or interested in process improvement, I urge you to read this book and take from it what will improve your organization. Whether you're a smaller company trying to get your arms around the chaos, or a larger company trying to get back to small-company roots, this book does a great job of scaling the process improvement mindset with its focus on "process choreography" and the "process oriented architecture." It helps you see all the layers of process improvement and architecture. There's something for everyone in this book; use it for yourself, discuss topics with your team members, find ways to improve your organization's day-to-day processes and help everyone "see the whole". This book reiterated to me that a company can greatly benefit when everyone - not just management - harbors a continuous process improvement mindset and practices.

The first, gives you the information you need to truly grasp process improvement while the second and third are great sections to keep as a reference as you start down the path of implementing change in your organization. One of the best parts of this book are the many templates and examples you can use in your own organization and the case studies do a great job of putting some reality behind the theories.Overall, a good book to have on your shelf, you will find yourself referring to it again and again.

He spent two years bedding some fine chiquitas and studying with some of the North America's most suave gents--including the best of them all, the God of the pickup "community," a man named Mystery. Mystery is an aspiring Toronto magician who charges $2,250 for a weekend pickup workshop. He is not much to look at: a cross between a vampire and a computer geek. But by using high-powered marketing techniques he's turned seduction into an effortless craft--even inventing his own vocabulary. His technique sounds like a car salesman's tip sheet: his main rule is FMAC--find, meet, attract, close. He employs the "three-second rule"--always approach a woman within three seconds of first seeing her in order to avoid getting shy. Other tricks: Intrigue a beautiful woman by pretending to be unaffected by her charm; also, never hit on a woman right away. Start with a disarming, innocent remark, like "Do you think magic spells work?" or "Oh my god, did you see those two girls fighting outside?" But a few years ago, a distraught Strauss decided he was a loser with women and set about transforming himself into the world's greatest pick-up artist. The Game is his long, often tedious but hilarious account of how he did it. This ugly-duckling tale will affect different readers in different ways, depending on their degree of cynicism: some will be awed by Strauss's ménage-à-trois snowball scene, while others will suspect it was cribbed from a third-rate porno Strauss watched in his pre-macking days.When his story begins Strauss is, well, a Neil: an unconfident, self-described AFC (average frustrated chump). He is also, it should be noted, a well-known rock critic who penned porn star Jenna Jameson's autobiography, leaving one wondering just how pathetic women really found him. After paying $500 to join a workshop for aspiring PUAs (pick-up artists) led by a magician named Mystery at Hollywood's Roosevelt Hotel, Strauss becomes addicted to pick-up technique. He trains with several PUA gurus, including Ross Jeffries, a hypnotist rumored to be the basis for the Tom Cruise character in Magnolia. He starts to see the misogyny of the sport and realizes that most of its leaders had miserable childhoods. The AFC who became a PUA to understand women ultimately becomes an expert on men.As Strauss grows restless to talk about things other than number closes and phase shifts (the book's glossary is a juicy read of its own), the mansion loses its appeal and he reluctantly grows up. When he meets a tough-talking band mate of Courtney Love's named Lisa and they bond over music, we can guess where the narrative is headed. In the book's final pages, he dumps onto his bed all the phone numbers he's collected and tells Lisa, "I've spent two years meeting every girl in L.A. And out of them all, I chose you," which is like telling your mother-in-law that the Thanksgiving dinner you had last year at Applebee's was nothing compared to the one she just prepared. But for some reason, Lisa doesn't flee. I can only hope that in the inevitable 2007 movie version, starring Jack Black and Kate Hudson, Lisa throws the numbers in his face and leaves him for a guy who knows how to pay a girl a compliment. This book was a very good read. As I began, I felt as if my eyes were finally being opened. There was this whole world I had never known. The were so many ways to pick up and talk to women that I thought would never work, or never even thought of. I wanted to try them all out, but I felt as if I should finish reading before I set out on my endeavors. As I read page after page I became more and more interested. I was seeing some of my coworkers in a new light. They acted just like some of the people in this book, some of which I had looked up to. A little more than halfway through, I began to see what direction this book was going in. I am glad I read this book all the way through. I thought that it was women that I was missing in my life. I needed to become a pickup artist, or so I thought. While it is true that women are noticeably absent from my life, that wasn't the source of my emptiness. It was confidence. It wasn't until the end of book that I realized that I didn't need any fine tuned pickup lines. I needed to just be me, but with more confidence. This book has given me the basic tools I need to start conversations with random strangers, to meet new people, which I had been to afraid to do. So what if they don't like me, the right people for me will. All I need to do is get out there and socialize. While this book still makes me want to go out and try to pickup women, it's not to become a pickup artist. It's to further myself in every aspect of my life. Women are my vice in life, my weakness, I am afraid of rejection and thusly, afraid of women. If I can overcome my biggest obstacle with confidence, then there is nothing I can't do. Even though Neil Strauss will never know of me and never know how big of an impact his book has had on me, his book has unlocked the door to my future that I can now begin to open. "The Game" is a bit like a chameleon in regard to its purpose and how people will interpret it. It is going to be different things for different people. For some it will be a entertaining documentary about an interesting underground community (the seduction one). For others it will be a self help/life changing book. Others a eye opener/oh s*** moment book (particularly for woman who have been targeted with the techniques Strauss describes). And so on. Or maybe all of the above!"The Game" is told through stories/first hand accounts of Strausses experience in the seduction community. He manages to tie in the life/self help lessons in nicely with all the drama of a good story. There's rarely a dull moment but I do have to say that it can seem Strauss is bragging at times and this hurts the flow of the story at times.Personally the book acted as a gateway for me, as I imagine many others, into a much needed self improvement period of my life. I began to realize my self worth, gain confidence in myself and really go out their and make my dreams happen. To look inward for approval rather than bending overbackwards to gain the approval of others.And I think that's where their is a lot of misunderstanding in the public. The seduction community is more than a bunch of creepy pickup nerds trying to bed and use woman. Often men find their way to the community after years of frustration and loneliness stemming from failure with the opposite sex (something they were never taught how to deal with by school or their parents). Maybe they were abused and suffer from extremely low self esteem. Whatever the case guys like Strauss, Mystery (and others) have been there and have done the hard and tiring work of figuring out what the problem is and how to fix it. And now their sharing this knowledge to others to help them. So it's important to have an open mind and not disregard Strauss because of the subject matter he's discussing.I do feel the game leaves you wanting more (perhaps this is by design). I would recommend, actually would require, that you check out Strausses follow up "Rules of the Game". It's much more of a "how to" book and features the style life challenge which is a 30 life changing program. It's the book Strauss could wish he could give to his younger self. Very insightful book! "The Game" was very popular ten years ago & I witnessed many men attempt the strategies. It was so iconic that I referenced it in Part 2 of my mystery novel -- Firm Resolve.No doubt many women find this book misogynistic. However, perhaps reality is more disturbing. Equally troubling is the misapplication of the principles recommended. Too many guys don't actually read "The Game" & take tips out of context. For example, the negs are supposed to be light-hearted & witty -- not blatant insults.Incidentally, in addition to my own copy which I loaned to two girlfriends, I also bought one for a friend. She thought she was dating a jet-setting banker. However, I figured the guy was a con-artist. It caused a rift btw us because I didn't say what she wanted to hear. Luckily, after reading this book, she got over 'her prince,' and married a nice solid guy who works a less glamorous job, but is a good father and husband.So while this book is supposed to be a self-help for men, it's actually a much better book for women. But I'm sure if I read other reviews, I'll see that what I've written is redundant.

Fantastic book, easy read.More than 50% of my life I've been a runner. I'm a white Caucasian male who is trying to always get better and I look up to East Africans in the sport of running because, quite frankly, they're the best. I'm always curious to know what kind of training they do differently, or what kind of food helps them. Obviously I'm aware that genetics plays a large role and no ONE THING will make me into a superstar outside of more training. But, I like learning about new cultures and seeing how I can implement changes into my running regiment using Kenyan tradition!This book is a fantastic read because it's a story about the authors journey to kenya to uncover secrets about kenyan success. What you find is that there are like 10+ "secrets" that, when all put together, lead to kenyan success. Not ONE thing like going barefoot, being at altitude, etc.

After reading "Born To Run", I purchased this book to learn more about why people run! This book is interesting - the best part being the final chapters. I learned why and how Kenyans strive to be athletes, how they train, the foods that sustain them, the trails they run on (with lions and other wildlife watching!) and what they do with their prize money as the best runners compete in worldwide competitions. The author and his family traveled to a Kenyan training camp, lived in a rented house in the town. and made many friends. The author met and ran with the top athletes in world competition including those who won olympic medals.Seventy years ago my husband ran long distance track in high school - he was a farm boy, spent early childhood in the mountains of West Virginia, and ran in school competitions barefoot! He won medals and enjoyed himself. Others wore sneakers but remember, they did not have thick soles! So now, with a son-in-law who runs triathalons and is training for an ultra marathon, I am amazed at how running shoes are changing to near barefoot status again.If you like to keep up with track competition and enjoy running or just watching from the sidelines like me (wishful thinking!) enjoy the book.

This enjoyable tale captures the enthusiastic spirit and genial disposition of its author and the willing, "let's go for it" all-in cooperation of his wife, Marietta. [Without her support, no trip, no book.]Finn's recounting details his decision to up sticks for Iten, a town in Rift Valley Province - the epicenter of Kenyan running dominance for the last decade or more. Ostensibly, this book is about Finn's 'game improvement' plan: having tasted a bit of success as an undergraduate runner, he takes up a friend's counsel to train hard for a year and reap the benefits. Being a good journalist, why not do that in the Rift Valley?In truth, the book is more about an exploration of Kenyan running dominance. What makes them such astonishing world-beaters? Finn's neat writing approach is to look for "the secret," all the while taking note of - and tallying - one factor after another chapter after chapter. The secret? After piling on the evidence, he concludes rightfully that there's no one thing. Here's his well-considered summary:"For six months I've been piecing together the puzzle of why Kenyans are such good runners. In the end there was no elixir, no running gene, no training secret that you could package up and present with flashing lights and fireworks. Nothing that Nike could replicate and market as the latest running fad. No, it was too complex, yet too simple, for that. It was everything, and nothing. I list the secrets in my head: the tough, active childhood, the barefoot running, the altitude, the diet, the role models, the simple approach to training, the running camps, the focus and dedication, the desire to succeed, to change their lives, the expectation that they can win, the mental toughness, the lack of alternatives, the abundance of trails to train on, the time spent resting, the running to school, the all-persuasive running culture, the reverence for running."I love the construction of the story: instead of formulating this list and studying the factors, it's the reverse that happens - Finn encounters each of these factors in turn in his daily life and training and then thinks, hmmm, that's another thing to add to the list. It involves a neat serendipity in his book: one of his co-runners in Iten is a "young American student named Anders" (we're never told his surname although - hint - it's 'Samuelson') Eventually, he "work[s] out that Anders' mother is Joan Benoit"...a fact not easy for Finn to work out because he gets a jumbled tale from his host, Godfrey, and - unstated - Anders is a humble kid (the apple hasn't fallen far from the tree).Later, upon the occasion of a visit to Iten by "Anders' Mom," Finn relates that "not knowing much about her career, I looked her up on the Internet and managed to find a video of her Olympic victory in 1984." He then proceeds to school his readers about her 'amazing' breakaway run in which she "plow[ed] on with a look of steel on her face..." Huh? By most accounts the seminal event in the history women's running and you have to look it up on the Internet to see what it was about? Seriously? Then, two pages later he recounts an episode with her while driving in Iten and describes her as a "small, elderly white woman with short gray hair." Elderly? Joan Benoit Samuelson is an attractive, 55-year-old woman who, yes, wears her hair short and naturally gray.That irritation aside, "Running with the Kenyans" is a delightful book. Anyone with an interest in sport should pick it up.

This book gets one star only because there is no way to give negative stars. I own a great many hunting books on various subjects and this one is the worst by far. This book reminds me of the way we all used to write those 500 word essays in high school, by saying a lot about nothing. This book has no solid tips or techniques. It is full of pictures but most don’t really teach or serve much of a purpose except to fill space and add to the page count. There are several pictures of decoy set ups that cover are large area of a lake but the pictures are so small you can cover them with your thumb so it’s almost impossible to make out the blind or decoy spread patterns. The book misses the mark in most areas, even something as simple as gear ( as well as most of areas of waterfowl hunting) you would like to know about and expect in any kind of book on the subject. What it does cover in most areas is all fluff. Here is an example, In the gear section the small paragraph about waders only talks about getting in water over the top of the waders will cause you to drown, a given, and nothing about the various types of waders etc. Another example would be the section on duck and goose calling that says the authors don’t know enough to talk about calling, but you should buy a DVD or CD on your own to learn how to call. This book is the “ultimate guide to waterfowling and the authors don’t know enough about calling and calls to say more than that??? It spends the first third of the book on duck identification and even that is done poorly. If you have never hunted or picked up a gun in your life you may pick up a very little bit of very basic knowledge but even that has been done in far more detail and far better in any number of other sources. I seldom totally regret a purchase, this is one instance where I do. I’d like to look into returning the book for a refund except return shipping would cost as much as the book. It contains absolutely nothing of value about waterfowl hunting and I am fairly new to waterfowl and I still took nothing away from this book.

As a criticism and a compliment, it felt like my buddies wrote it and gave it to me. It felt a bit repetitive in a few parts, "Next this author will tell you about...: "These are hunted over decoys..." "(Author name) has a great story about that but we will get to it later..." If we were sitting around the fire I would love to listen to these guys spill their guts all night. It reminded me of reading my friends essays in high school; Tell them what you are going to tell them, tell them what you are telling them, tell them what you just told them. Kind of felt like the theme through out. Don't get me wrong, I am not writer or critic so it is only my opinion.My absolute favorite part, and exactly what I was looking for, is that each species' life histories included identification by the way they fly, how they land and take off, their calls, migration timing, as well as in hand and so forth. I do wish they could have given more advice for us western hunters but hey, gotta write what you know. I can take these techniques and use them as much as I can here in AZ still. Also, the "bird's eye view" of spreads and blinds was a great addition, gave me a new point of view.In all, the book is worth it for the newest guys. The info is legit and I would (and have) recommend this book to any new duck chasers.

Great book for those just starting out and those hunting experts. Packed with great information and tactics. I hunting in northern Illinois and use alot of ideas from the book. One of the best waterfowl books out there. Also my kids can't put it down it's packed with great pictures as well. Highly recommended !

I bought this book for my husband since he hasn't been duck hunting in many years. Great book for new duck hunters or those needing to refresh their skills and see what's current. Nice hard cover with great color photos! The type is easy to read, and the book is well organized.

To me, this book is unique in its coverage of waterfowl hunting. It is organized so I can go directly to the topic I am interested in reading about. Whether it is duck identification or shooting techniques, the book seems to have all aspects of the hunt. The color photos are high quality. Much of the information gave me facts that I had never considered. I would recommend this book to any hunter.Amazon Customer

Excellent book. I am a rookie and could not be introduced to waterfowl hunting without this book. It is very descriptive, full of tips, and really nice pictures. an excellent resource and investment into the game of duck hunting. I couldn't go out without the knowledge I have learned from this.

Poor quality. Photos are bad and badly pixelated in some cases. No diagrams or illustrations when they would have been useful except on page 232 where they took a photo of a hand drawn map of migration routes made with colored pencil...really??! This book screams amateur author. Run on sentences that don't actually say anything. Repetitive descriptions of birds. Definitely got paid by page count. Just bad. Don't recommend.

Still have a lot to learn, but this gets my feet wet

Excellent adaptation of Pilgrim's Progress BUT don't show it to a young child before YOU preview it first. You know your child and what will frighten them. Just wait a year or so until they are old enough not to be frightened by the pictures. At that point they will understand the allegory for the Christian life better anyway. I like the way some of the original words from Bunyan are retained. They will provide a good foundation for when your child reads the adult version as an adult. A LESS scary version (without pictures) is Little Pilgrim's Progress by I think Helen Taylor. My kids enjoyed that VERY much. The only negative to that book was the use of the word "cripple"--my kids' dad was disabled.

A must have for Christian families. I read this to my kids many times when they were young. They still talk about it from time to time even though they are grown. I'm a grandma now, and my daughter requested this as a Christmas gift for her daughter, my granddaughter. I bought it for her, so the family tradition continues to the third generation. Makes me very happy. I hope it continues for more generations.

What a great children's version of a great classic! I was highly pleased with it. We decided to use this for a homeschool co-op class and the children, ages k-5, really enjoyed it. And, even though it's some pretty heavy material to cover, I think they got something from it. This book served as a wonderful springboard for discussing Bible truths. As they continue to grow, you can always refer back to it, because it's good enough for both kids and adults.

I read Pilgrim's Progress for the first time about a year ago, and "Dangerous Journey" really stays true to Bunyon's wonderful story. My boys--ages 5, 3 and 2--all love this book, but for different reasons. My 5 year old loves the action and excitement. My 3 year old (for whatever reason) loves the fact this whole thing is a dream--he often says, "I had a dream last night. . ." and then launches into some hilarious and imaginitive story. And my 2 year old loves the huge and vivid illustrations.One of the things that sets this book apart from other children's books or videos (like Veggie Tales) is that the book refuses to soft-pedal the scary situations and frightening enemies that Christian encounters. The giants in this book are not overgrown pickles wearing boxing gloves, but enormous monsters with hairy warts and clubs the size of trees. The dialogue and illustrations can be shocking to 21st century parents in this politically correct age--and kids absolutely love it! (FYI--my kids have never had nightmares about any of this. We constantly remind them that God is in control of everything that Christian and his companions encounter.)By reading this story to your kids, you can teach them about the sinfulness of man, the rage and power (but ultimate destruction) of the devil, and the overwhelming holiness, love and sovereignty of God. It's also a great way to express the idea that life is a journey, and although this is our Father's world, our true home is in that heavenly country across the River Jordan where our loving Savior is waiting to welcome us.

This is my second purchase of this book. About 10 years ago we bought it, and our 5 kids literally wore it out. They like the story, but love the pictures. It was just one of those they go back to constantly. It had fallen to pieces, and we were happy to find the exact same edition, and bought it again for the next 10 years.

My son (7) and I read through this together over several days and we both enjoyed it, its very well illustrated and written so he could understand it. I highly recommend this and am so glad we added it to our home library.

This book is pretty intense, may scare little kids, but I read it for the first time when I was 9 and man, did it stick with me. Such an amazing classic parable, really has some great lessons. I still learn from this as an adult, every time I read it, gives me a lot to think about and chew on.

Ok, that title sounds like a cheesy Rex Reed movie review. But this book really did grab me. The illustrations are generously sized and very detailed. No matter how many times you have read Pilgrim's Progress you will be challenged to see things in a new light. And your kids will be drawn into the timeless story.In a day when Western culture has lost its Biblical morrings and no longer sees life as a pilgrimage, a jounrey to Heaven, this book draws us out. It pulls us from the search for inner self-fulfilment and directs us outward to get on the road. This metaphor for the Christian life is just so gripping.A must have for parents and their kids.
